The last time he played forward was a pre season match at Casey last year and on one leg kicked 4 goals I reckon he CLEARLY is a forward!

Can you get in the real world. He's kicked 1.2 in his AFL career. Just what makes you think he's going to be a good forward. A pre season match played how many years ago? To his credit he did a reasonable job yesterday.

There's plenty to criticise about Melbourne and Goodwin. This is a poor way of doing it.

What about the examples where Goodwin has shown himself to be a tactical innovator? He may have failed in a number of attempts but he's not a dead fish like he's made out to be on here. The heat on the team over the past two seasons has delimited his breathing space, but Simon is a bright mind and a dedicated student of the game and sport in general. I get that the fans have run out of patience, yet the confirmation bias on here is strong. Team does poorly, it was Goodwin's fault; team does well, it was somehow in spite of Goodwin.

Goodwin will be coach next year, so hopefully get his opportunity with a fit team and normal season.

Successful clubs typically stick with coaches for Quite a while, so I’m not in the dump the coach after every lose mode! I can also appreciate things that Goodwin has done well over time!

However after the Freo loss, Binman, George & Andy, On the Podcast (thanks for the time, effort & entertainment provided gents, much appreciated) highlighted a number of fundamental flaws, and if three wise keen supporters can see it, I would expect at least the same from our FD, including the coach!
Goodwin might make It, but he needs someone who is a better analyst of opposing teams, a match day tactician, and better assistants.

But we could run a competition of the five obvious flaws in how the Demons play, and most would be pretty close!
The playing list is close, probably 3-4 improvements on what we have to make the difference!

So the way I see it, we need the Hawks to pull their finger out tomorrow, but if not, either the Saints/Dockers winning sees us make the finals (to most likely be embarrassed by a better team, but hey, you never know)?

No Saints losing to Giants by about 5 goals is best result or Freo beating Dogs.

Providing we beat Bombers by 5 goals or more (Saints) or just win no margin (Freo  beat Dogs )

Great feedback to him from May on playing his role by reinforcing the right behaviours:

“Both of his goals came from closing down his man and winning the ball back… I told him that’s what happens when you work hard and play your role.  “I’m super proud of him and that should give him a lot of confidence.”

Was great to see Pickett improve last night as well. Throw in Lockhart and Langdon and the club has done very well with these new additions. Rivers is showing seasoned 100 game plus players how you play.

So what has happened to this Viney “coachability” in the intervening 5 years?

He has been coached by a rookie coach who has been and continues to be learning on the job rather than continuing to be coached an an experienced coach.

Goodwin obviously has a good relationship with the players.

However tactically he is ordinary. After four years our kick out strategy is kick it to Max or Salem, that’s it! The opposition go to Max, last night GWS won the ball back nearly every time it was kicked to Mac!

After four years ourbackline still lets the like of Daniels this week, Walters last week get a free ride - look like we finally addressed it with Lockhart Mid season and he hasn’t been seen last three weeks!

There are many more examples!

Lockhart not playing is a mystery He has set a standard fir a small backline player and no one else has hit anywhere near it

He is part of the May,Lever, Another 3rd tall,Rivers,Lockhart and  Hibberd (2021start ) Could be Jordan maybe Replacement Hore  for Depth and Petty part time For tall watch.

Salem you ask Well I think the sooner Salo gets nearer the forward line the better we will be.

He has  played some really good football this year at Half  back but conversion Is our nemesis and the better and classier our players in the forward  line  The more we will score and be harder to beat.

Just went to the MFC website against my better judgement and lost my shid immediately on seeing the headline.  A small step forward - Goodwin

Simon Goodwin says his side is still a work in progress

No.

The truth is that Goodwin is the work in progress and the club suffers as a result.

I'm done now. No more negativity.

But f^&k him.

A small step forward and a WIP.

WTF I thought he had been coach for 4 yrs. This is a huge indictment on Goodwin as we should be we and truely past this.

Goodwin seems to have his “L’s” on and it shows with the way we are playing. Losing to swans and freo is inexcusable. You watch the bulldogs win their last 2 and make finals.

We had the opportunity to be in control of our own destiny but with a learner coach we have to rely on a other teams to lose which I doubt very much will happen.

The worst thing on top of missing the finals will be that he will probably be there next year and we will have to endure another wasted season.

Salem is a natural forward, I get why Roos and now Goodwin want him at half back but I think we're missing a shot having him absent from our forward line

High horse?

Not sure of the relevance of that one.

You're having a crack at Goodwin based on quotes from a press conference you didn't watch. And your criticisms are pretty ill-founded. You're upset at him saying we need to play consistently each week and that we're a work in progress. Both of which are correct. We all agree that it's not good enough that we're a work in progress as at Round 17 2020, but better he admit it than suggest otherwise.

Just watching the replay as I missed (actually kind of avoided) watching it live. I’m almost at half time and a couple of things to mention, not big things though.

But after clearly being the better team for so much of the game it’s incredible to see us go behind with 2min to go in the second quarter.

Second thing to mention is how much the commentators look like muppets when talking about the guernsey we were wearing. I mean seriously the way they talked about was downright embarrassing for channel seven. If you don’t know what the guernsey is about then don’t say anything, they can ask their producers/researchers to find out why we have it on. It was absolutely pathetic and totally unprofessional to talk about it the way they did.

It terms of the games it had some moments of real brilliance with Petracca and Oskar Baker’s goals (I’m glad they gave him another crack at it). We had some missed opportunities where we were genuinely out and then got caught on the turnaround.

Looking forward to watching the second half (knowing that result ?).

Just finished watching, I don’t know if Cairns affected the way we played or intended to play, but they played with dare and skill at times as opposed to looking unsure and flat-footed.

Perhaps (and this is in absolutely no way excusing the shocking performances) the conditions suited the scrappy nature comes from Sydney and Freo’s plans and they were then able to gain confidence from our inability to get used to the conditions.

But we definitely have a gem in Rivers, and it was good seeing Oskar Baker get amongst it though he was quiet in the second half.

May is awesome and there should never be a question mark put on him again. AA nomination surely and I think he deserves a spot in defence.

Max had to battle against Mumford’s physical tactics, that guy is a hired goon at times.

I think the players should be proud of the all round team performance, Petracca sounded frustrated at the end of the game which mirrors the supporters feelings. One win from either the last two matches and we could be going into next week’s match knowing a win would definitely see us in the finals. Here’s the important part, we have the opportunity so bloody well do what we can do and beat the scum. Whatever happens after that happens.

Either way aim to finish the season on a high.

Spargo can kick 50 metres! And has composure lacking in a lot of our list

Rivers looks top 5 draft pick quality

May is the best full back in the League

That is all

Spargo came back this year and his first 2 games were excellent. He then played some pretty average footy but against dockers he was much better.  I was surprised that kick had the journey.

Has been inconsistent but its exciting that he can play some very good footy. Maybe its just a matter of him getting more games and confidence.

May has proved why the club was so keen to get him. Has the title of team's best player.

Rivers is a gem. Looks like after a year or so, he will be fighting May for  that title.

Throw in Langdon and Jackson and the club must be praised for some very savvy choices.

Hopefully this will continue and the club is also hard enough to make some tough choices and remove about 8 to 10 players at season's end.

As an afterthought on the clubs newcomers..

Despite the dissappointment of performances this year (and last) we have a lot of great talent that can really make an impact in the future.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
