Recent history and performances across a 3-year period clearly indicate that Goodwin is no 'genius' as Coach; and, OMac has never been a 'good footballer' (his only reliabilities are to be last to the contest and fully useless within it as a means of self-protection).

I pointed that out last week. Stunned he didnt do it again even if it was just to stop Jines sulking on the bench and showing a terrible example to the younger players.

We have a team that have been together for long enough to demand finals. Accepting off the back of other performances is weak and not what we should be relying on to play finals. Get Clarkson - not next year - NOW

Also, one thing that needs to be highlighted:

We had yet another quarter, the second, where the opposition banged in five goals while we didn't kick one of our own.  It happens way too often for a side supposedly pushing for finals.

Take that one out and we won the first and third quarters, and both kicked 3.3 in the last.  

I'm merely bringing this up to show that we are still having this sort of brain fades that don't last five minutes, but last for thirty, and we don't seem to have any answer for it when it starts to go pear shaped.

Players refused to dig deep and do the hard things. You could see from the very start they were hesitant in going into contests, refused to tackle, refused to run without the ball. A current assistant coach at another club messaged one of my mates "these players just have no ticker".

Goodwin had no answers yet again. It's hard to see improvements he's made in his time as senior coach. Most of the 'improvement' has come from a better list. So many of the same problems with no answers year after year. It's also hard to see how we motivates the players. The corporate speak and monotony doesn't seem to be working.

Stafford. Firstly, goal kicking is very very poor. Clearly not working. Secondly, our ruck work seems to have gone backwards to the point where it's rare that our rucks hit it anywhere near one of our own players.

Richardson. What has he brought exactly? Neither here nor there with him tbh, but I've seen nothing different from a coaching perspective.

Don't want to go too overboard after one game, but this is too much of a recurring theme now, these things happen far too often.

Staggered if people keep believing that 'Goody has the players' after seeing this kind of thing over and over.

The worry for me is I've heard him in about four interviews try to explain his role, and his responses were confounding.  Hard to deliver in an ill-defined role.

We are the gift that keeps on giving.

Credit to Goodwin, at least it only took him a half of football to realise he'd made an awful mistake in picking OMac.

That's it, no more McDonalds in this team thx.

Don't worry mate, we had 20 players playing drunk tonight anyway.  It's only fair to join them.

If Goodwin gets the [censored] by years end, I’d consider it as successful a year as 2018 (maybe even more so).

Soundly beaten in all areas of the game, coaching, tactics endeavour and ball use. So typically Melbourne it just shows you cannot trust this team as they just don't have it. Freo outplayed Richmond last night but they managed to win ugly. If we aren';t on then that is it. There is no inner spirit or desire to turn it around. One passage of play summed us up. Late last quarter the ball spills from a pack and Allir runs and picks it up and Fritch runs past hime. Fritch refuses or is incapable of applying pressure or tackling and that is Melbourne. I believe we just don't want it enough. Sydney are well drilled, play to instruction and work bloody hard to get back and don't all hunt the ball. For goodness sake I saw Viney 3 times get in the way of a team mate in a better position because he was hunting the ball for himself.

We are so far of being a tough, competitive regular finals team it makes me hurt.

 

Well I just bronzed up so it’s going to be a long night.

I am convinced we have a fundamentally flawed bunch of ‘stars’ in the midfield who lack the skill level required to take us all the way. Unless they collectively improve their skill level, it doesn’t matter who we recruit on the outside. And we are coached by a C grader who lacks the tactical brains of his peers.

We need Jackson and Weideman (who was pathetic today) to become superstar key forwards to have any chance with this list. 

As crushing as this is limping into the finals again would have been papering over the cracks, change is needed

Lots of blame for Goodwin again. Those gunning for him are going to be really unhappy when our players regularly raise the white flag under whoever the next coach is...just like they did under Roos, Bailey, Daniher and many coaches before them.

That loss was on the players (again). A dedicated or proud group wins that game every time.

And if I hear anyone talk about how they didn’t handle the wind in that quarter, I’ll throw up. Sydney prepared for it perfectly. And we are left hearing excuses again.

If you followed his efforts all night you'd realise how far off that comment is. Was our best afield by a country mile. Only one who decided he'd have a crack for every minute of that game. Coming back from 5 goals down into a breeze would have been a miracle and the kickout he stuffed game was already done.

Selection just baffling. Cannot say any 4 ins contributed anything apart from making up the numbers. Jones is done which is a very sad thing to say given all that he's done for this club thick and thin but tonight and last week has just proven he's just not up to it anymore. If you're slow and cant kick, youre done. Smith should get moved on or at least have one final crack at a forward position where he can play unaccountable football. Can't defend to save his life. ANB, Wagner are just eh footballers, who you worry with ball in hand. 

As for the rest of the side, purely expecting the game to fall their way with applying zero pressure or grunt. Why does it consistently take us to be on the brink, to bring either decent footy smarts, skills, tackling or pressure? Either the messaging from the coaches is that far off the mark or they just cant stand up. Either way, it happens far too often and serious questions needs to be asked of this mob and some absolute no nonsense coaching to this group is absolutely neccessary. No doubt they'll show up next week and get our hopes up again. The cycle will inevitably continue....

Both teams flew up there on the same plane today 

The game was lost at selection going too tall and not bringing in run.

The players were then clearly not on from the start fumbling, getting caught, not laying tackles.

The coach and players then fell for the oldest trick in the book kicking with the wind and  just blasted everything in selectively picking out their spare without fault.

The players then looked gassed and lacked energy a quarter and a half in.

Players did their usual individual efforts and not doing the team things. If I see Viney push our own players out of the way to try and get the ball again I will scream. 

Improved quality and a kick up the bum saw us increase our efforts in the second half but our inability to take chances under pressure saw us not take advantage. 

The best thing that can come from this is Finally accept some home truths and resolve them immediately. Oscar is a liability, Jones is finished, Melksham is lazy and Fritsch a down hill skier (I would play neither but you cant play both). We desperately need run  and should be bringing Lockhart, Baker, Pickett, Bedford, Bennell in to get some speed on the game. 

So disappointing again. You could tell we weren't playing with the same intensity as Sydney from the outset and when the penny finally dropped in the last quarter we couldn't convert. Some terrible decision making forward of centre with the wind didn't help. 

Another season of these young mens' careers squandered
