I don't think the environment back in WA has actually been ideal for him to succeed. It seems like fitness staff never got ontop of his injury, rushed him in and thats why he kept not performing at the level we saw.

They (FFC) were under a fair bit of pressure at the time. New kid on the block Bell saw the danger signs and tried to pull out of the trade, but the new president told him that the fans would crucify them if they let this once-in-a-generation talent slip through their fingers. subsequently, the urge to get him on the park at all cost must have been enormous.

Imagine Hogan at FF taking the number 1 defender, leaving Weed with number 2 defender and Jackson playing on the wing or half forward to stretch their defence and chopping Max out in the ruck.

I think he's an old fashioned CHF, best when roaming around, marking, linking up, the odd bit of ruck work, while snagging the occasional sausage roll himself. But it's all moot now as I think the footy world has seen the best of him.

Rushing him onto the field did more damage for sure, Freo were desperate at the time.

He is very much suited at CHF, I Like Weed at FF yet it seems Tmac is playing deeper than him generally.
Hard to tell just from TV what exactly is happening with our gameplan.

Hogan is a huge talent that can play many positions when mentally healthy

Would be very happy with him lining up at CHF today for the Demons!

Doubt the club would go for Hogan again, as many rumours when he left.

But would take him as a late first round or second round pick!

Is there something negative about the culture in Freo that's turning some guys off?

- Cam McCarthy seems to have a bit of bad blood

- Sam Collins was barely used despite promising form and now killing it on the GC

- Matt De Boer was mismanaged, delisted but remade at GWS

- Rumour has it Crozier was keen for the Bulldogs trade

Croad, Tarrant....Hogan?

We could do with a CHB.

No interest in him as a forward, he's exactly what we don't need.

When he left I thought the messaging around it felt like the door was open.

Would be foolish not to put it out there... give them a late second rounder?

Is an instant upgrade in the forward line, was one of the big reasons we had a solid home and away in 2018.

Freo seem to be happier and improving since they cast aside McCarthy and sidelined Hogan. Frankly we don’t need the drama and negativity he will bring back to the club even for a throw away pick.

Absolutely

Questions any club would have to ask:

  • Can he play to the same standard as when he first started his career?
  • Is his head in the right place? If not, will it improve if he comes to us?
  • Is his body OK, in particular his troublesome foot? If not, will it improve if he comes to us?
  • What will list sizes be in 2021 and beyond? Does that limit the number of "project players" (if he's considered to be a project player) that the club can have on their list?
  • Could we use him or do we have his position adequately filled?
  • Will his asking price fit comfortably within the salary cap?
  • Is he worth the remuneration he asks for?
  • Could his pay packet end up causing other players to be aggrieved or even force them to leave to create space? If so, who would he effectively replace on the list? Would we want to lose that player?
  • With this year's draft compromised by lots of father/sons and academy players combined with a lack of junior football because of Covid, is he a better prospect at the price to be paid (in draft picks) than what may be available in the draft?

Given none of us know the answers to any of the above, how can anyone say they think Melbourne should pursue him or not?

We let him go because he became a big problem.

Freo have discovered that he is still a problem.

Don't we have enough problems?

Correct, no way we’ll get him back

I think one of the major problems was the “when will he go home?” It became a distraction for the club where players had to constantly trot out the usual line of “we love Jesse and we hope he stays a Melbourne player for the rest of his career”. You’d think if he were to return to us that would be one issue gone.

The others are well publicised: attitude, off-field “interests” (won’t elaborate), and depression related issues which I have no doubt were cause mainly by the loss of his father, his own battles with cancer, injury issues, and being isolated from his family.

He’s an older head now and perhaps like Bennell a change of scenery, but perhaps with familiar faces, could be of benefit to him.

This is of course all speculation.

Invest in one or two diamonds in the rough each year. Why not that rather than a few journymen.

One of our problems is a lack of talent.

I don't know if his issues are insurmountable but he does have talent.
