i find it interesting that Hawthorn is playing its first game in Geelong in something like 14 years. strange how we seem to play there every year and they don't.. i wonder how many other such anomalies apply where some clubs avoid Geelong, interstate trips, etc..

 

I believe the Bombers havent played at Geelong since 1993. Collingwood probably similar. The game has become about the money and these sort of things just go on without issue. Is what it is as they say.

    Let’s be honest if there was 100,000 people at the game last night it would have been great to watch, the atmosphere is what makes the game, without it is boring

    IMO it won't matter what the AFL do to change things. Coaches are so hell bent on trying to keep as much control over the game as they can. Coaches don't care if the game is good to watch, they are paid to win. I think for some of them, winning 1 to 0 would be seen as a big win defensively!. 

    Even last night with about 10 seconds to go and Collingwood had the ball, you could see the first thought was to not give up the ball and not lose the game as opposed to moving it quickly and try to win it. 

    Go back to only one coach, they won't be able to teach the players as well and defensive structures will break down, allowing for more scoring. It won't happen though.

    Last night was a big let down for sure. 5 goals a piece from two of the best teams. No exciting goals, no big marks, no bursting through the middle of the field on a counter, no run down tackles. 
    it was like a game of under 10’s. following the ball around and no space. 
    hopefully some coaches come up with a plan to bring back the focus on attack over defence

    The answer is simple. And it is not reducing interchange any further - coaches will get around that too, probably by slowing the game down even further to allow players to rest on field.

    Use the coaches rather than try to reign them in.

    Incentivise scoring with premiership points. For example winning or losing teams teams getting to 100 points (or even 85) get one premiership point.

    Of course there are variable in terms of weather and possibly venues (eg in Tassie where it is often windy) but so what. It would largely even out over a season and luck always plays a'part in teams fortunes.

    The coaches will still be defensive but not nearly as much. They will look for ways to maximise the chances of winning but will look for opportunities to snag that extra point. Losing teams also still have an incentive to keep attacking and not put the cue in the rack to save energy for the next game.

    If nothing else it might stop one of the biggest blights in the game - teams with 3-4 goal lead shutting up shop with 10 minutes to go, chipping it around and playing in slo mo. God awful to watch

    Commentary was back to its boring best last night - Pendlebury - he just has so much time doesn’t he? Even brought up his basketball background and he’s been playing footy for 13 years!!

    They finally had clean possession of the ball, I'd be playing for the draw too. 

    The pies have lucked out in avoiding extra time these past 10 years!

    Viable option. Ruckman are a dying breed who have little influence on matches. Grundy is overhyped to the moon. Wouldn’t have been in the top 15 players on the ground last night playing against a plodder in Soldo.

    For Gawn to have an impact on games he needs to flunk marks around the ground either intercepting across halfback or contested as a bailout up the ground. 

    We’ll likely see more makeshift ruckman used in future. If they nullify ruck contests then they’re an extra runner around the ground.

    Would like to think that Hawthorn v Geelong is watching 10th play 11.

    Maybe this strange season will give the Cats another year in the eight.

      Round 11, the second week of The Sir Doug Nicholls Round, kicks off on Thursday night with the Cats hosting the Bulldogs at Kardinia Park. Geelong will be looking to to continue their decade long dominance over the Bulldogs, while the Dogs aim to take another big scalp as they surge up the ladder. On Friday night it's he Dreamtime at the 'G clash between Essendon and Richmond. The Bombers will want to avoid another embarrassing performance against a lowly side whilst the Tigers will be keen to avenge a disappointing loss to the Kangaroos. Saturday footy kicks off as the Blues face the Giants in a pivotal clash for both clubs. Carlton need to turn around their up and down season while GWS will be eager to bounce back and reassert themselves as a September threat. At twilight sees the Hawks taking on the Lions at the G. Hawthorn need to cement themselves in the Top 4 but they’ll need to be at their best to challenge a Brisbane side eager to respond after last week’s crushing loss to the Dees on their home turf. The first of the Saturday night double headers opens with North Melbourne up against the high-flying Magpies. The Roos will need a near-perfect performance to trouble a Collingwood side sitting atop the ladder.

      The two teams competing at the MCG on Sunday afternoon have each traversed a long and arduous path since their previous encounter on a sweltering March evening in Sydney a season and a half ago. Both experienced periods of success at various times last year. The Demons ran out of steam in midseason while the Swans went on to narrowly miss the ultimate prize in the sport. Now, they find themselves outside of finals contention as the season approaches the halfway mark. The winner this week will remain in contact with the leading pack, while the loser may well find itself on a precipice, staring into the abyss. The current season has presented numerous challenges for most clubs, particularly those positioned in the middle tier. The Essendon experience in suffering a significant 91-point loss to the Bulldogs, just one week after defeating the Swans, may not be typical, but it illustrates the unpredictability of outcomes under the league’s present set up.

He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

      The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.
