He was on the ground for a long time in the foetal position with a Hawthorn player hovering over him. (Stratton?). It was visible in the background as play went on? Looked nasty. To Fritsch's credit he was ready for play next time the ball went forward. I think that was ANB. It was on the boundary in the forward pocket. He was on the mark and Stratton put a block on him. He came in hard (too hard) from behind caught him unaware and winded him. Stratton knew it was dirty that’s why he hung around to make sure he was alright. Edited March 6, 2020 by deeology 1 1 Quote

Pates 9,697 Posted March 7, 2020 Posted March 7, 2020 So far I’ve only seen the first half, but I can’t see any reason why people would be having OMac out of their round one side. His kicking was a lot better than Hibberd and May’s (apart from May’s awesome kick out!). 2 Quote

Tom Dyson 1,645 Posted March 7, 2020 Posted March 7, 2020 red and blue beats [censored] and poo, did we expect anything else? Hopefully vanders injury is not serious, i really want him to have a good year, because i think he lifts the whole team with his physicality. and fritta should never be put into the backline again. he has been and will always be a genuine forward. super excited for round 1, come on demons !! TheJam 23 Posted March 7, 2020 Posted March 7, 2020 Not phased by Mays bad kicks - hasn’t played a lot of fully fit footy in last 18 months. It will come back quickly. Himself, lever and OMac all need to be there. Langdon and Tomlinson seem like excellent choices. Love Langdons ability to find space and lots of it but seems one sided. With a damaging left he could be anything. Was caught out a couple of times. TMacs form will come, he just went to the wrong spots. That can happen. Midfield looks solid, great to see Gus back amongst it. Hibberd can go for Salem. I’ve had enough of his play on and bomb long tactic. Lockhart has the potential to be anything. He is hard and can be very clean and also reads the play well. People knocking Jetts on here is outrageous. Will towel up the best small fwd every week. Quote

His kicking was a lot better than Hibberd and May’s (apart from May’s awesome kick out!). O Mac played well but he had 6 kicks to May’s 18, and May still went at 76%. He had a couple of early blunders but if there’s one player in the back six I want with the ball in his hands it is May hands down. Back six for mine is May, Lever, O Mac, Jetta, Hibberd and Salem, although I am loving Lockhart atm so having him drop back there is a luxury. I’d play him regardless as he has already elevated himself to one of the best ball users in the side. Hibbo isn’t the consistent and reliable player he was when he arrived at the club, but on balance I’d rather have him out there than not right now. Worth noting that Hore was also good when he came on. Defence could be shaping up to be a real strength this season. 2 Quote

P-man 13,367 Posted March 7, 2020 Posted March 7, 2020 Less said about the first half the better. Skills from both sides were extremely poor, although it did allow Jones to stand out. Keep in mind he only played a half of footy. If he had played a full game I think many would be singing his praises. Jones in the forward half will be a weapon this year. Langford and Tomlinson, wowee. Not only are they aerobic beasts who open up the ground but they look like they are leaders out on the field, Tomlinson especially. Top class recruiting. Acquiring small forward depth seemingly overnight is both unexpected and tasty - Kozzie, Spargo, Bedford and ANB all pushing their case for a spot. From a team perspective, to run out the game with seemingly plenty left in the tank is a huge positive. It’s little wonder people wanted Burgo’s autograph at the family day. We can play a hell of a lot better than that and still won by 5 goals. Much to look forward to. 8 Quote

Kossie is obviously the favoured choice, and he has done more than enough to be selected. However, we know that ANB is a Goody favourite and he was decent in patches last night. I thought Sparho, while not getting a huge amount of the pill, put on some terrific pressure and did some really clever things, while Bedford has showed some glimpses of impressive play. My choice, at the moment, would be Kossie and Spargo, but I'm interested to hear where others stand. Im not a Spargo fan as i just dont see any weapons in his arsenal. Last night though, after watching the replay, i thought his hands in-close were really quite good. A couple of his releases directly resulted in shots on goal. His vision also seemed to be "on point" to use a cool-kids saying.. That said, Bedford is rapidy finding his feet at this level and is definitely worth a shot. I thought the kid was another Small Fwd bust for MFC, but hopefully i am wrong. Maybe Bedford by a nose because of his improvement rate? Happy to leave it to the Club tbh. 2 Quote

I think the reason Kossie is favored is because he seems to be that natural opportunist rather than general "hard running small forward" which the others are. He is the only true goal sneak on that list, I think. I agree with this deanox. Kossie adds a completely different dimension. I thought during the game that he would have been a handy ground level addition when the ball was bombed forward. Might have snagged a couple, I reckon. 2 Quote

He has found a new role as a shut down player across half back on dangerous small forwards. He wears his opponent like a sleeve and has great closing speed and smart with his positioning. He also did some very good things with some side steps and getting out of traffic. JL is a naturally gifted and intuitive footballer who plays with aggression passion and self belief and is team orientated and breaks lines as well. Mark 10/10 PS disposal only very slight query under pressure ! Just what we need a replacement for Jayden Hunt ( sadly) who could start a 7/10 year career. Quote

titan_uranus 25,255 Posted March 7, 2020 Posted March 7, 2020 The three things I'm most pleased to read are the positive comments over Langdon/Tomlinson, the way in which the back six are working together as a unit, and our fitness in running out games. We all know why we need proper two-way running through the middle of the ground. I'd prefer all of our back six to be good kicks but IMO it's more important that they are working together as a unit to deny opposition scoring attempts. It seems that is starting to come together (May mentioned it in a post-match interview, talking about him and Lever working out what each other are doing). Hopefully being fitter will see us run over the top of sides but even if not, if it just gives us the confidence to think that we're always capable of fighting back then that's a positive. Looks like we're starting to develop competition for key spots as well (e.g. Lockhart and eventually RIvers vs Hibberd, Pickett vs Spargo vs ANB vs Hunt (I suppose), Jackson vs Weideman vs Brown). 3 1 Quote

Improvement through games on larger grounds, and lasting out games better. Will make us tougher to play against. Given that logic, where does that leave us in the West in two weeks. They have some serious talent up forward, we will need to be on our game. Is that a better back line than the one which was cleaned up in 2018. If so, where? Quote

Hellaintabadplacetobe 4,335 Posted March 7, 2020 Posted March 7, 2020 Biggest positives for me are our fitness ( best I can remember in decades) and our ability to switch play ( something we have rarely done well probably due to our lack of fitness. ) Both go hand in hand and will win us games of footy this year. We could be last quarter specialists this year which will be a joy to witness. 2 Quote
