Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

There has to be more to the story of this vision from after the Crows game in Adelaide which we held on to win.

To me it looks like perhaps Jennings and Goody had a disagreement on a strategy. Goodwin ignored Jennings idea. We ended up winning despite that and Goody let Jennings know about it with a "told ya so I know what I'm doing" slap.

It does look like that could be one explanation.

Alternatively, I was at that game. At various stages it was a shocker. After the first 20 minutes it looked like our season was over. Then in the last few minutes they came back at us and Eddie and Jenkins missed shots virtually from the goal square. If they'd kicked them we would have lost. Jennings job is strategy and opposition analysis. He could be buried in processing what just happened so he can order it in his head to teach from it during the week. Goody doesn't slap him he rolls his hand over his head. Goody has often said since then that Jennings is one of his best mates.

Who knows. He's gone. We move on. My only interest now is who replaces him. And that they're better and get us the win n next years Prelim.

The other assistants in that interaction appear to be in Goody's ok box.  Each of them gets an acknowledging /friendly pat, back slap or in the case of one, even a hand shake (somewhat closer than the others?). but there still doesn't appear as if there's a "relaxed/genuine" open camaraderie there in a general sense.  Alot of tension IMV.

As for Jennings and Goody WOW!  A slap on any part of the head from another dude, particularly over the back of the head like that (across or on the face also) a huge no no / put down and a massive red flag that there was/is no love lost between the two.  Very aggeessive response by Goody and indicates a major breakdown of trust/openness between them at some point IMV.  I'm surprised Jennings didn't move on earlier after seeing that vision.

According to reports, some senior players were very fond of Jennings.  Jones very keen on Jennings also.  I wonder if this incident and the fall out between the two (Goody & Jennings) was part of a catalyst that's slowly spread right through the playing group from the Captain down following the Adelaide win (earlier?)...

Extract Courtesy of AFL Nation:

..." Melbourne co-captain Nathan Jones endorsed Jennings last year as a senior coach-in-waiting, praising his tactical nous and ability to present ideas in a "refreshing" manner.

"He's one of the best minds in footy I've seen," Jones told AFL Nation.

"He is quite quirky, particularly in the way he educates and teaches players, which is terrific, really."

P.S. You would have thought we'd win a prelim or better the way Goody reacted to that.  Just a regular H&A win.

How many footy minds has Jones seen? Tis a bit like Campbell Brown endorsing someone as a good bloke, hardly an experienced or reliable determiner on what constitutes 'good'

Agree. Jennings has feathered his own nest with international trips and other career building projects.  No strategy on show ALL YEAR.

Or was he just not listened to...taken seriously  etc.

This is true JD.  Which is why we need a wise old owl heading the FD who knows what a successful FD looks, smells and IS like.  Should be going after Balme big time IMV.  Might need to accompany the offer with a sincere apology letter!  Top down review / renovation needed starting with appointing someone who has the knowledge / experience & weight to highlight the major weaknesses / holes.

What a pitty PJ & Roos didn't put this person in place prior to departing.  Possibly not for the want of trying.  The AFL should have assisted and gotten involved also to make sure their earlier investment  and efforts weren't flushed down the toilet.  Silly Gilly.

To put such a person in place meant moving Mahoney out as GM Football and PJ was never going to do that.

PJ promoted him from Assistant coach in the Bailey/Neeld era to Manager Football Department (largely an administrative role) and then promoted him to to General Manager Football (covering admin, coaching, list management, sports science) in the Roos era .  And PJ had clearly earmarked Mahoney as his successor as CEO.  Thank God that didn't work out.

Have said it before Mahoney is great at administration but a poor manager and has poor footy nouse.  So I see him as a large part of the problem having overseen and signed off on game plan, nearly every staff appointment, player trade and recruit in the last 3-4 years.

Pert should have managed the review program himself as Mahoney was never going to replace himself.  And what Mahoney sets up this off-season re assistant coaches, trades, recruiting etc we will be stuck with for the next 2-3 years (standard contract terms).

Pert with the help of an external AFL review board would have been better LH.  Pert barely getting used to new office and surrounds, let alone people/systems etc, before this calamity hit and really in no position to assess without external expert 'independent' guidance IMV.

As you are alluding to, the internal mid season review by Mahoney has obviously failed big time and there's no point him leading another.  He needs to be included as part of a full external review from here after next week IMO.

Or are we going to continue with blinkers on and hope for the best in the same veign as the post WC final "nothing to seriously review here" debacle?

Exactly Rusty

He needs to be reviewed along

with the whole sorry lot

How long has he been there. Maybe he is a part of the problem.

He might be fine in a limited role predominantly admin Kent as LH has mentioned.  Maybe he was handed and bit off more than he could chew, which may not have been all his doing?  He wouldn't have created the role himself surely.

PJ might need to take some of the responsibility (criticism?) here.

Sitting outside the four walls all we can do is speculate and most of it probably way wide of the mark anyway.

Agreed.  That Pert has abdicated the review to Mahoney without external input, is a major worry.  Having worked for a long time in corporate consulting I've not seen a successful result when a person reviews their own patch.  It often becomes an exercise of protecting the sacred cows and finding scapegoats.  There are changes but are they the right ones...

More concerning is staff and player changes are now being made and will be made to fit Mahoney's 'masterplan'.   Their replacements need to be found in the next month or two as that is when assistant coaches etc move clubs.  So not enough time for an external review this year.  And not much point having one next year as we will be stuck with any contracts Mahoney signs now (usually for 2-3 years).

Sadly, the opportunity for a fresh start off-field has been lost for several years at least.

How is that? This master of strategy has devised one that has been consistently picked apart this season. I think he’s a fraud if anything.

So the reality is LH that regardless of how effective or otherwise the mid season internal review was/is we are stuck with our present lot plus whoever Mahoney annoints in the next few months for at least two to three seasons.

If we end up in a major state half way through next season, even a replacement coach is likely to have little room for change in the FD other than his own abilities to 'change' mind set, motivate and game style.

That would suggest my earlier idea is the better alternative than just sacking Goody mid season if it ever came to that...

That is, appoint an experienced quality mentor to sit alongside and guide/advise and IF things haven't improved significantly by mid way through next year the assistant effectively (unofficially) takes over proceedings with Goody as an assistant until his contract expires.

Could be Goody and his mates didn't listen or implement.

In the end what ever has happened is entirely Down to Goodwin. He must be held accountable

Anyone hear Jennings on SEN today?  Guy has a massive amount of knowledge on the game & strategy. Great to listen to:

https://www.sen.com.au/programs/whateley/

He's gonna be a big loss for us, although he is Goody's best mate so I assume he'd be in his ear quite a bit which is good.

Listen to what he says from the 18 minute mark....where he dissects the Bulldogs new game plan style and says that's the strategy he'd employ if coaching somewhere in 2020.

You know, we all have different opinions but I thought he was boring and told us nothing an engaged football person on this site wouldn't have known.

A lot of the stuff he said sounded like it came from self help books and seminars, a lot of nice words and catch phrases but no scientific evidence to back them up.

Came up with some nice new labels for game styles though.

Yeah its true. For all his knowledge and strategy, it still wasn't enough to overcome factors like having your best 4-5 players off the park for most of the year. That aligns with his Pareto Principle analogy though, that 20% of your players account for 80% of the result.

T Mac, Melksham, Jetta im looking at you.

Do people fail to realise that Craig wasn't at the Bulldogs when they won their premiership? They sacked him the year before. I don't know why people don't discuss this further. Every time his name has been mentioned this year, the first thought I've had is why did the Bullies get rid of him if he's such a Guru that everyone keeps saying?

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
