Tasmanian author and respected Sports Journalistย ย retired a couple of years ago, used to write great articles in The Age. Embedded into the Melbourne Football club during their recent rebuild. Caught Andy Maher and Bob Murphy discussing this on SEN as I was on my way home, would love to hear the audio

You could be right mate

Absolutely agree with this. I think we are all hoping Viney wasnโ€™t going to become our Selwood but heโ€™s barely AFL level at the moment.

I hope he does become our Selwood.

Martin Flanagan is a superb writer and demon tragic. I wold never mss his regular articles in the Age. Met him at Robbie Flowers service and thanked him for the brilliant story he wrote about Tulip.

His writing reflects his connection with footy especially at local levels and grass roots footy all of which came through in this interview. Rob Murphy was a perfect foil for him. He finished off when they asked about the culture atMFC and he started by stating that they are the world longest established club at senior level. He likened them to a tragedy & a comedy. He thought that Barassi moving to Carlton, modernised both them and the modern game, turning itย into the running game we know now. Sadly MFC has been slow to adapt. He then said the best thing MFC could do now moving forward was make Max captain and detailed why. Well worth listening to.

I agree! Note Martin said Max should be club captain and that captaining the club is different to just captaining the team on match day. It is his off field presence and personality as well as his fierce desire to perform on field and ability to lift players around him. He certainly has the current co-captains covered with his media savvy and appeal to club supporters IMO

Max'interview after the siren last was pretty frank and lucid. I feel that Max has shown enough committment to MFC to be our Captain . Even though Nathan Jones and JV aree our captains, I do not sense a feel of presence about them.ย

Nathan grew into the leadership role, but is now using all his attributes just to stay on the park. I also feel that the appointment of JV as Co-captain was made a bit prematurely. He has been a tremendous servant of MFC.

And while weโ€™re at it, can we go back to a Captain and Vice-Captain setup? Or just a Captain and no Vice or Co.ย ย Co-Captains has never made sense to me.ย

Jones should hand it over and just focus on playing good footy in his twilight years. Viney should give it up, be VC instead and just work on his ability to string a coherent sentence together. Max should be captain next year.

Also Rod Grinter was on the same show - Demonland podcast again scooping the big boys!ย

Isn't there some kind of secret code about ruckmen? Same as 'never hand-ball to a ruckman running past' - 'never let a ruckman be captain'. I'm just being silly of course, but it doesn't happen often.

It would be interesting to see how Gawn responds, because at the moment he's got all the fun and the candour that you want from a champion, and I wonder if having the role as a formal representative of the club might actually limit that a bit?

What are the key things you'd look for from a captain these days?

- Consistent good form and effort on field, and in training.

- Visible and memorable media presence and positive relationship with fans.

- Makes teammates feel more confident about themselves and their place in the club.

- Helps teammates understand their role and responsibilites as professional footballers.

- Communicates effectively as a representative of the players to coaches and club.

I'd generally say Gawn meets all of these, though some are insider details we can only guess at.

Viney and McDonald might have met all these criteria except they've had such poor individual years, for various reasons.

Open to ridicule if Jones stays as Captain as one of the lowest paid players at the Club.

Doesn't deserve a big paycheck. ย We are not a superannuation fund. He really should retire.

Surely he won't be.ย

My concern is Viney's reaction if they strip him of the captaincy. I don't think they will, and I don't think he would step down. But it mayย be in our best interest for one of the two to happen.

Which Viney? I imagine senior wonโ€™t allow it without a fight.

Perhaps it is time for Jonesy to give up the title, allowing Max to become co-captain with Jack.

Max should captain in his own right. Martin is right there...

Goody's captains call to make Viney co captain was a rookie coach error and shouldn't have been allowed to happen in the first place.

Said so at the time and still think so...

He should step down and concentrate on his own game.

Viney senior should see it's in Jack's best interest and more importantly the teams.

Can we stop with vague forum threads with little if any context? I really hate those Facebook groups for that reason.

You missed the most important -ย When the game is on the line stand up and lead. We are lacking that from all our leaders at the moment, Max included. Max needs to get a bit of Lebronย James into him and want to be the match winner. ย He should be wanting to clunk a few in front and want to kick them, especially in last quarters. He is more than capable. ย

ย

Viney will continue to be captain while daddy is there.. which is a joke really!ย

Gawn should be out right captain with Lever as Vice.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
