Completely agree, heโ€™s not alone in this but 4 out of 45 inside 50s is horrible. I really feel like the players are being told to just get it in there without an actual plan. There is very little lowering of the eyes and even when we do itโ€™s usually a poor kick.ย

Fix it Goody!

Wowee we are a long way off the second worst as well.

Oli needs to realise he had time, so many times he slams a kick on the boot and he looksย to have time to steady and look a target.

No wonder the game looks like ping-pong played between the 50m arcs!

This highlights how bad our midfield is at kicking forward.ย  They all bomb it into no-man's land.ย  Most teams know that and play an extra defender to intercept or mark it.ย  An interesting stat would be the # of opp marks in our fwd 50.ย  I bet we would be one of the highest (badly) ranked teams.ย  Our fwds don't stand much of a chance.ย

For Oliver, only 1 kick in every 2 games stays i50ย  That is an indictment on his game.ย  He works very hard for every possession so its such a shame that 41 of 45 are 'wasted'!ย  Just shows that while his stats are great his impact is less so.ย

Most of Oliver's i50 kicks seem to be around the body or at right angles to the fwd 50, he doesn't even try to look so he has no idea where the ball is going.ย  Because they are high lobs it gives defenders too much time to get to the flight of the ball and intercept.ย  Time to slow down a tad and straighten up.ย  Then we will see a real champion.ย

Correct and too often does the same with handballs.ย  Great at getting to the contest and getting the ball...fair bit of work to do with what happens after that.

Wow... I knew it was bad, but we are so far off the rest of the comp!

I know - and we have 3 wins! Imagine how unstoppable we will be, when it is rectified :)

God I hope we do hahaย

Olivers kickingย is essentially Moloney Mach 2 this year. He just throws it on the boot in hope something happens. While heโ€™s racked up big numbers, his impact on games is definitely down. He used to be an effectiveย kick, but that part of his game is off this year. Hopefully he learns to steady for a second longer to asses his options.

As a team in general this year our kicking has been diabolical.

Our kicks not only into 50, but all over the ground, tend to float up in the air, sit there for 5 minutes, then gently descend like a falling leaf. Even suburban coaches will say to kick low and hard. Gridiron coaches must watch in awe at the world-class "hang time". But we like to give oppo players plenty of time to get to the fall and punch it away, or better, mark it themselves as our players don't seem to know that you can catch the ball with outstretched arms.

If we had a player who could move atย 2469 kilometres per hour we would never lose a game. Alas, Moloney was not even close to being so fast.

Fix it coaches!!!ย  for the love of god!!!

It is killing us.

This kick it long is obviously a directive from the coaches.. Needs to change, our forward structure has looked poor all year as they lead to the top of the square most of the time. Need a forward coach who has forward craft!!!ย

I agree it is what the coaches want(ed):ย  Oliver has said several times (even a month ago) that his instructions are "see ball, get ball".ย  That is how he was trained from the day he arrived 2016 Interview.ย  And, like all our players he has been trained to play 'ballistic' football and play on, relying on sheer quantity of i50 to win rather than i50 quality.ย  We now see the results of that training/style, especially that all teams have gone super defensive this year.

I think it is too late to retrain Jones and maybe even Viney.ย  But I hope that Brayshaw and Oliver are not beyond redemption.ย ย

As and aside, Harmes is pretty good at picking out targets and delivering the ball low.

One thing about Oliver and Brayshaw and Petracca, is how slow they are to get the ball onto their boot. Salem on the other hand is lightning quick from when he see's a target to when he has disposed of the ball. This is critical as well as with Oliver you can see in advance what he is doing and defenders adjust.ย

While there is some value in this statistic, it's the equivalent of the truth without the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

If my team retains the ball 25.6% of the time in its forward 50 while the best team keeps it in 36.6% but my team gets the ball into the forward 50 twice as often as the team that retains it 36.6% of the time, which team is doing better?

Of course, if my team gets it in there twice as often and retains it more than anyone else but doesn't score, etc. I could go on.

In other words, the value of this statistic only goes so far. Sometimes stats are useful. And sometimes their value is grossly overstated.

ย

ย

There has to be two players accountable overall forย this stat - the forward line receiver needs to do his bit as well I'd have thought.ย

Not to say we don't just bomb it away, I think we do; but I'd reckon you need to look at this in parallel with (perhaps) a contested marks inside 50 stat as well.ย

A good kick into 50 relies on someone willing to lead or at least make good position to the expected drop of the ball. Clarrie's team mates must know by now where his long bombs will land and start heading in that direction before the oppos.

Long bombs into the forward 50 will then work to our advantage. We have to stop dreaming about "lace out" passes and work to retain contested possession where we should have a slight advantage in skill and knowing where to go.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterdayโ€™s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown andย  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
