The swans play the same way we did and were are they on ladder? Jones has been a servant of the club no doubt but he is to slow cannot think his way through in the modern game time for him to explore other options.

In two weeks time he will become our second most capped player in over 160 years. If you're suggesting he's been a "servant of the club" then I have to wonder why you'd bother supporting us. His co-captain has been just as poor despite being half his age, and didn't win us our only game this year.

Hunt is not a good AFL footballer. Need natural crumbers, not blokes with zero skill and zero footy IQ

Been saying that for a while now..

Can run fast, and only in straight lines.  As you say,  no footy brain.

Apart from Tim Smith, not one of our forwards - Weid, Jeffy, Trac, Lockhart, ANB and in the last term Fritter could get a sniff of the ball last night, although they were often cramped by the Tigers zone and there professional screening.

But to me the big issue up there is that none - except Trac - plays with attitude and arrogance - and you need that when you are getting blocked out.

So Goody has to go back to the drawing board again and figure out his forward line restructure. If Preuss is fit, he will play up there and you'd imagine if he isn't then Keilty will make his debut. I'd be happy for Jordy Lewis to be sent forward because whilst we know he is slow, he does have attitude and could direct things a little. It was nice to see Goody experimenting a bit against the Tigers and I think he'll need to do it again a bit which means Olly, Melky and Trac may have to rotate out of the goalsquare.

I'd also play Oscar as a forward at VFL level this week - that's why he was recruited, although his lack of aggression will still be a worry.

Not much use sending Weideman to  Casey. The same with Hunt.

They need to be played until the bye at least and then reviewed.

Keep Garlett in and hopefully he is replaced by an in form Spargo after the bye.

Watch for a game or two to play Petty and surely Keilty deserves a shot at some stage.

And of course change the gameplan. Goodwin is in danger of losing the playing group if he continues with it.

Doesn't matter one way or the other if we win against the Hawks but lose in the manner we have every game this season and the morale will plummet.

Why do they need to be played at all if they contribute nothing - why is Weideman gifted games when people cry out for others who contribute just as much to be dumped

The guy is a protected species - we are so devoid of list depth we continue to have to cling onto the hope that he will turn the corner and become an AFL player - well guess what there are no guarantees it will ever happen - meanwhile we play one short each week while he racks up games

Does anyone really think that West Coast, Collingwood or Richmond would continually gift games to players that don't contribute week after week - NO is the answer

Not sure about you but I'm not sure there is any morale left to lose - and I don't see playing guys week after week that contribute zero is great for team morale either

They have a reason for winning.

For us winning or losing is irrelevant if it doesn't advance the team.

VFL level football is not of a standard that it provides a solid proving ground for players. We are perversely in luck that we can experiment at AFL level. There is no one at VFL level pushing for their spots anyway.

Out Weidemann forever

Collingwood would be almost 'obliged' to take him on ... and we could demand a substantial trade price to pick up two or three great country kids who are ready to rock n roll.

We saw what Sam can do in last years finals when he was awesome.

He is seriously down on confidence. Apart from running under the mark.. his lack of tackling was dissappointing so his efforts to trap the ball in were less than Preuss.

Having said that I have no answers. i feel that apart from omac up ff we have exhausted most options.

Recruiting an experienced proven ff and crumber is a must over summer.

How do we get players confident again?

Extremely briefly - Confidence comes from the execution of task first... good (or bad) feelings always come after the action....

Yet, coaches and players buy in to the need for confidence...confidence just makes things easier.... because if you believe you need confidence to execute, what happens when you dont have confidence (your execution goes to [censored], as you are not task focused)....

Garlett provided run and good link up work up the field, it is not his fault the delivery into the forward line was crap. Tim Smith is so much more versatile and mobile than Preuss and arguably shown that he has been our best forward target we have had all year. Preuss may be of use resting forward, he is so slow though. Frost has been our best back so far this season. It is run this team needs more of. If you are going to sacrifice a forward to play on Sicily then you are playing into their hands and Sicily has won the battle. The way to beat Sicily is to have a good forward make him have to earn it.

Yep Jeffy linked up with 2 goal assists and was in dangerous positions if ball was delivered well ( Which it never is)

Look I reckon start playing Bedford , Chandler and a few others and see what they offer. 2019 IS CACTUS!

I know where you are coming from but the gimpses of skill we saw from him last year for me suggest its to early to give him up.

Hes still young in both age and games played.

I dont think hes worth his salary but he has shown what he CAN do.

If we see more of his finals form we are on the way to finals again.

Pains me to say it but ANB is nowhere these days.

Weid has got to get back to basics and could do with a spell back at Casey however I don't see it happening.

Viney might miss with a shoulder, although the longer break could help...

A lot of others will continue to get games who probably shouldn't purely due to a lack of alternative options - I say again - who are we going to bring in!?

FB: Hibberd  Oscar Hore
HB: J Wagner  Frost  Salem
C;  Stretch  Oliver   Brayshaw
HF: Petracca   Keilty   Hunt
FF: T. Smith  Preuss  Garlett
Foll:  Gawn  Harmes  Melksham
Int: Fritsch Lockhart  Sparrow Jones

Out: Viney (inj), T Mc (inj),  Weid, Lewis, ANB
In: Sparrow, Oscar, Preuss, J Wagner, Keilty

No point playing injured players, no point playing Lewis.
May as well go back taller up forward to hopefully stop Sicily taking 85 marks.
Keep the focus on heavy rotations with the midfield and give young Sparrow a job on O'Meara for part of the game at least.

Edit: Tommy's tendinitis might be ok after a longer break so he probably stays in, wouldn't mind the idea of him starting back but swapping with Keilty if by some miracle we aren't out of the game at half time.

Jones: two games short of Robbie Flower's 272. Have appreciated all Jones has done, but he doesn't deserve to pass Robbie. Or to hold the record for the #2 jumper. Stand aside, Nathan.

What’s to come in ? Really? Only Preuss.

We have 6-7 best 22 players out.  We got rid of our depth.

In:

1. Hard at it footy. Grit. Knockons. Shepherds. Smothers.

2. Gut running. No walking. INTENSITY TO GET TO EACH CONTEST

3. Kick to the hotspot about 15-20 out from goals. NOT TO THE FUC$)N POCKET

4. Discipline.  No stupid high tackles. It’s the waist every time

5. Identify the other clubs strategy. Example: We let Houli have 25 kicks unmarked.  He was their defensive rebounder.

6. “Connect forward of centre” a Goodwin-ism. BS really but it means kick to find a player

7. One up one down. Under 8s stuff. One up at the contests and the other crumbs. We are dumb

8. Break tackles. Get your arms free. Pendlebury is the master

9. Quick ball movement.  We must play on. Slow and wide gets killed

10. Kicking for goal.  Practice practice practice. We have been ok in 2019 even but it’s still CRITICAL

AND

11. Stop overhandballing around in circles or useless handball to someone standing RIGHT NEXT TO YOU often meaning they get caught with the footy

@praha- it’s also within threads. Nathan Jones should apparently stand aside cos this dude thinks he isn’t worthy of second place on our all times games list.

We need to recruit/develop 6 or so at Casey who are pretty much ready made for AFL Sydee.  That would help cover off some players who need time to go back and find some form and/or work on aspects of their game before getting a recall.

I just want to see more midfield rotation during the game. Collingwood are the best at cycling through their midfield and we need to do it better too. It’s how we are going to overcome our two way running issue.

Midfield: Cycle Brayshaw, Oliver, Viney, Harmes, AnB, Melksham, Petracca, Salem, Jones, Garlett.

Wings: Cycle through Stretch, Hunt, Brayshaw, Fritsch.

Forwards: core players being Tmac, Weid or Smith (whoever is selected), Lockhart. Preuss when not rucking.

Defence: Core being Frost, Hore, Omac, Lewis.

Hibberd on Breust

Hore  on Gunston

Frost on Roughead

Omac on Mitchell Lewis

If Preuss plays, they’ll put Ceglar on him.

Maybe he should spend some time with Dipper and understand you can still be everyones friend, just not on the footy field...

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
