Absolutely rapt!  One of my most favourite players.  A two year deal it seems so this keeps him a Dee till the end of 2021.

While his silky talents are oft talked about his value to the team goes under the radar a bit.

Congratulations and delighted you will go round in red and blue!

Edit:  would have preferred longer as he will be a Free Agent when he comes out of contract at end of 2021.  But if we win a few flags in the meantime, well...

Great news.

Love his hardness which has really come along the last couple of years.. I was starting to doubt him there for a bit.

Also worth noting that in comparison, Josh Kelly is a sloppy disposer of the pill.

Very talented player, and i hope this year he locks in a spot as one of our elite players. He has always been just outside that area for mine.

Underrated player.  I only say that because, with Oliver, Brayshaw, Viney, Max etc in the midfield, it's easy for him to slip under the radar.

Sublime skills, tough as nails and deceptively good overhead.  Now that he's fit we are seeing why he was a top 10 pick.  His range of abilities compliments the rest of the on ball brigade, and the half back line, perfectly.  He'll never win a sprint contest but his vision and footy IQ more than make up for it.

Hopefully he settles into a wing role without too much fuss and is hitting players lace out on their chest for the next decade.

I'm not convinced with this 'new' approach of re-signing players before their contracts expire. It was muxh more entertaining when 'he who shall not be named' kept us guessing before going to GWS.

And whats with not pinning our future on the draft. The off season was so boring this offseason.

Rant over.

We have so many good players now, i dont know what to do?!!

Sign on Christian!

Salem is one of our best players. I would be signing him for 4 years not just 2. He is an absolute gun.

Salem is such an honest and silky smooth team member and in our best 22 without a doubt. His left foot precision kicking is a classic and a delight to watch. I wish him all the best as i believe he is ready to do something special. Ready for his breakout season.

Perfect example what we've managed to assemble in our midfield. Has some outstanding attributes (kicking, vision, facial hair regeneration rate) but in no way is limited to that.

It is a rare and valuable thing, to have a player be described as silk but also be described as someone it is unpleasant to be tackled by.

That's not the current opinion of AFL people at the moment!  Kelly is one of the best disposers in the AFL !

Christian is playing career best footy at the moment as a result of extra work and commitment during the last 2 pre-seasons.

Deserves any luck after injury cruelled his first 2/3 seasons.

Csn be even better off the wing in  a premiership team!!

Salem's disposal is excellent. When thinking disposal, can't help thinking of Dom Tyson. Ever notice how TV commentators would say "normally uses it well" or "exceptional kick" just before Tyson turned it over?

I wonder whether we wanted to but he (perhaps on the advice of his manager) wanted to keep it shorter. He may believe his value will increase substantially over the next 2 years, especially as he becomes a free agent* at the end of this contract extension.

*Based on Lucifer's Hero's post above which I'm sure will be correct.

Lives in the shadow of Max, Clarrie and Gus but no less important. Happy days.

Well he is less important. I'd prefer Salem out of the side before the names you said. Let's be honest, he isn't of the same importance as our AA ruckman and midfielder or Gus

I would debate that. He is one of the best kicks in the team and controls the play from the back half beautifully.

Ken Oath! Big difference these days and it has been so important. Another playmaker stowed away.

Max doesnt agree with you - he is on record as saying he wants the ball in his hands as much as possible. A different role to Gus and Oliver but equally important.

Salem's transition from backman to a spot on the wing is a good thought; it could be very productive and perhaps, just perhaps, producing more value from his kicking accuracy and 'read of the play'. We suffer in games from reduced accuracy and deliberate hits into the forward line - Salem may well be one series of teeth in the cog for improved forward penetration and delivery. Whilst not often a wingman, this need reminds me of Rodney Grinter, feeding with accuracy (albeit a far longer and more forceful kick with an ability to self-pr0tect) into those spots and players on the forward line who could convert. The re-signing of Salem adds stuff to our future success.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • GAMEDAY: West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
