Given our injury level is so low, it got me thinking about team make up if all players were fit, AND if all players were currently playing to their best of their ability. Who would be in this team and in what position to best suit the side? It’s a little bit harder than it sounds I think, because if all players are playing to the best of their abilities, then the more skilled players would have the advantage I believe. Anyway, here are my thoughts:

Jetta OMac Hibberd

JSmith Lever Lewis

Hunt Jones Salem

Melksham TMac Petracca

Wiedermann Hogan Garlett

Gawn Oliver Viney

Int: Fritsch Brayshaw, Hannan, Vandeburg

Emerg: Tyson, Harmes, ANB, Spargo Vince

Like to hear your thoughts.

Pretty sure there is a best 22 thread floating around already, having said that... Personally I wouldn’t have Joel Smith in my best 25-26 players let alone starting 18. Vince is still best 22, Harmes/ANB/Tyson in front of Vandenberg

Sunday’s team will be pretty close to our best 22 IMO.

Kent the only one missing due to injury and he would be borderline.

I’m guessing Garlett comes back in.

Agreed

He's in.

Not on his form this year.

On everything we've seen so far, Pedersen is way ahead of Weiderman when we go on "best performed" (or whatever this thread's premise is).

Weeds has a lot of years to catch up though, which is good cause that's what the VFL is for.

Also, who's JSmith and why is he in my best Melbourne footy side?

Joel Smith. I think he could eventually be in our best 22. He has a lot of potential and sound like he's building form in VFL. Wouldn't be in my current proven best 22.

Lewis isn't our best 30 .

Neither is Vince.

I know Bernie has his haters on here but he is ahead of Smith and Vanders.

I still think Pedo has the edge over Weeds, but I get why the club is playing him. We need games into Weeds to try and get him developing as a ruck forward for next season.

Can't possibly leave Harmes out following last week's performance. ANB  FD favourite.  He won't be going anywhere soon. I was there last Sat and saw more of Weid's contribution than I saw on the replay. Lewis is the wise head. Tyson the only replacement for mine.

Vanders???  The bloke hasn’t played for 2 years.  He is not in our best 25.

J Smith also hasn’t show enough to be in the squad.

Vince is a lock for half back and Harmes is in front of Vanders by the length of the Flemington straight.

Ive got no idea what "best" means.  If we are forecasting stats in Weid, surely we can go back just as easily and say Vince is a core mid.

On the best of their ability shown, spargo is ahead of Weid.

Happy to play make believe but Weid, Smith and Hunt are cusp to this list.

Not sure how Hunt pushes Fritzl off the wing. Hunt has shown nothing in that position, Fritsch is a natural.

Playing their best footy:

Jetta Oscar Lewis

Hunt Lever Hibberd

Salem Jones Fritsch

Melksham Hogan Petracca

Garlett Tomald Hannan

Gawn Viney Oliver

Bench: Brayshaw Harmes Vince Kent

Emrg: Weid ANB Spargo

Waiting to be traded: Tyson

Fritsch almost looked better on a wing, which is scary because he has looked bloody good in the forward line.

He sure has left this impression. For the Carlton game, I'd like to think we could give him a rest as he has had a few knocks in past weeks. My rationale is to save him for the Crows and Collingwood, up forward, where he might tear those teams to pieces.

No, he plays.

 No love for Kent. Sad.

His own problem.

When Kent is at his best, clearly he is a best 22 player.

The fact that we see his best so infrequently means he isn’t.

Coming back to pre-season with condition doesn’t help he cause either. He needs to speak to Salem or Oliver about getting fit.

Thanks Steve.

Heres hoping he can get back to his best. One  tough player.

Our best 22 is what we have now.

Weed for Bull, that's the only difference.

The players that are out are out for a reason, all of them are inconsistent.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
