ANB is an absolute potato. He could have 40 touches and none of them would be any good.

Agree with this. Horrible footballer. Can imagine opposition coaches let him get the ball because it is advantage them. Another one allergic to tackling.

Harmes has to go. Terrible.

Melksham must be on thin ice.

Bugg probably. His skill errors are momentum killers.

These four gone won't make a single bit of difference though. We have much bigger issues that can't be fixed this season. Like playing ring a ring arosy football at stoppages. Like having no outside players of quality. Good players like Jetta, Hibberd, Hunt, turning into turnips overnight, etc.

We're only going to make, what, 3-4 changes? It's not going to matter anywhere near as much as the remaining 18-19 players lifting.

Having said that, there are some key things we need to do.

The number one thing we must do is drop Bugg. To never be played again unless and until he is regularly kicking bags of goals for Casey. A complete liability in the side otherwise.

We should also drop Harmes. A classic NQR player whose ceiling is lower than a lot of the other bad players.

We should also drop at least one of Lewis and Vince. Whether we like it or not we're not dropping both and I suspect we're probably not dropping one, either. But we should, and it should be Lewis.

As to who comes in, Tyson and Hunt should be two ins. I also think we should be bringing in a second tall to be a proper second ruck when Gawn is off. We might need to drop Frost to make that happen.

So it could be something like:

In: Tyson, Hunt, Weideman/Pedersen

Out: Bugg, Harmes, Frost/Lewis

Agree with the ins but not the outs. Although Bugg can be wasteful in front of goal it was only last week he was one of our best players, and even taking his accuracy today into account he was still one of the better players in the fwd line today, on form Fritsch or Garlett go out before he does. Harmes also gets a pass to since he is stupidly been played out of position as a back up ruck, Melksham is debatable but I think he has runs on the board so would survive for now.

My outs would be Jetta, Frost, Vince and Fritsch

Outside of Fritsch I don’t think any of the other 3 has played what I would consider a good game this year. Not that they are the only ones mind you but they are the most expendable of that group

Good call. Although Bugg was excellent against norf. Melksham 4 sure.

Lewis needs a big kick in the ask your mother for a sixpence. Perhaps he can focus on tv appearances more.

Our biggest asset is our biggest weakness.. We have so many B grade players we cant fit them all in the side where as other teams need to play C graders or worse. B graders are great,  they can perform well on any day but they cant be relied on to win you games. We just don't have enough A graders that perform week in, week out. Gawn, Hogan and Oliver cant just do it all alone. And our other A grader, Viney is weeks away even if he doesn't have another setback. Hibbard and Lever both should be close to if no at A grade level but are so far off their best. Until we get more players that are reliable Goody is stuck with the impossible job of predicting which 18 B/C graders will perform on a particular week. If you assume Tyson returns from illness, you could mount a case for any of Hannan, Stretch, Pedo, Weid, Hunt, Maynard, Balic, Smith x2 coming in and playing well. But it's anyone's guess who.

Interesting way of looking at it. As I keep saying our list is clogged with mediocrity. I do not understand where all the hype came from.

If you're going to have mediocrity they at least need to be able to play a role or have a point of difference

You know what the problem is we have no Game changing pace in our side. Richmond have it in spades in the fwd line and Midfield line. Plus we have shocking foot skills we'll get mauled by those counts.

Lewis, Harmes, Bugg must go and also due to lack of pace, Brayshaw is in danger. Vince is gone. The older players tend to not put there heads over the ball and look for easy options. Lewis and Vince were perfect examples of this. Unfortunately we have to many great VFL players that are just not up to AFL standard. This week at training we should go back to the old days and do just kick to kick and circle work. Some of the skills showed today were pathetic. Fumbled and when we did win the ball just bombed it straight back to the Hawks. I would throw the Trac and Hoges in this  also. They would rather wait to comb their hair for the photo before looking for a player in better popsition. Tough but real.

time to play blokes that are the future instead of hacks. Out slow poor disposers, in some pace.

Lucky: Bugg. Kicked 4 last week and 4 shots today, laid a few tackles. If he can fix his kicking all good.

I know he’s hardly a world beater but we lack class and I think Stretch has class. He’s a good kick, he is not exceptionally slow and I thought he was starting to come good under Roos.

We are playing too many of the same type of mid-sized plodders who give us little. Harmes, Melksham, Bugg... I mean roll them into 1 player and the result is the same. For all his flaws ANB is a hard runner and covers a lot of ground. And he can kick a bloody goal. The other 3 are on a hiding to nothing at the moment.

As for Lewis, I’ve beaten that dead horse enough. I’m sick of his shizen and he needs to retire.

But he can’t fix his kicking. History suggests that last week was a fluke. He is the biggest energy drainer in this team. He is a momentum killer. He is a liability.

Not a serious finals team with him. Needs to go. Next.

I'm cringing every time Lewis goes near it at the moment - he's been phoning it in all year!

He's been sat on his lemonade and sars multiple times, two weeks in a row...what. is. up.!?

Its only down deep forward. and its out of form.

We need Hunt to find form playing wing at Casey.   Also I would not be above trying Dion soon.  Maybe very soon.

And Spargo.

Dion who? Not Johnstone he's not even at VFL level. The sooner Baker starts performing at VFL level the better we need his pace.

I'd go...

OUT: Bugg, Melksham and Vince

IN: Hannan, Hunt and Weideman

Hannan for Bugg. Hunt for Vince. Weideman for Melksham.

Weideman plays second ruck and rotates forward.

Harmes on thin ice, but would play him off half back.

I wouldn't be against dropping Frost either, but I think he'll keep his spot to try and combat speed (although for such a quick guy, he looked slow today).

If Lewis stinks it up again, I'd drop him the following week (but won't happen).

Good point. He probably comes in, but I'm not sure who for. ANB is a connector forward, so we need him. Harmes is on thin ice, but I'd try him off half back. Fritsch is worth another game. Salem is stringing some good patches together.

No I just read your VFL report.  I missed the VFL game yesterday.

That's disappointing, as we need someone with speed and nimbleness.  I'm hoping that Dion will come-on this season.

But like many atmo, he isn't doing just yet.

We have a handful of seniors who have lifted their games, but many who have dropped away.

Hunt being one, who I see had a god game in the VFL ?

If you're going to make an amendment Werridee you need to provide the whole team-sheet afresh. Otherwise it's too hard to get a true sense of the changes with just a couple of names floating in space.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
