Weid will be fine. Can't wait for us to win Sunday and the MFCSS will reduce significantly.

Yes but what happens if we win comfortably but Dom Tyson misses a target or Omac a spoil?

You underestimate the power of the MFCSS! It is your destiny!!

Wrong, we'd still be worried because Watts is not, has never been, and will never be a KPF. In fact he did best as a third tall.

Watts played second string to Hogan and bagged 40 goals. McDonald played as an only tall, we haven't seen if he can work off Hogan.

Still waiting on Darcy Moore. He’s a spud.

I wonder what Pies fans think of him?  I never got all the hype around him.. I noticed they have have moved him to the backline now.

Early days but I have yet to see anything that convinces me Weids will be a gun as predicted by Macca a few years back or have a significant impact at AFL level other than a few reasonable camio matches if he gets a run at it.  Looks like a potential VFL reasonable quality player but AFL might be a step too far.

Maybe this year will prove me wrong.  Hope I'm proven wrong as we sure could do with another decent tall forward to assist  Hulk or fill in if injured.

Lets hope he can begin to show something over the next season or two at AFL level.

Ladies and gentlemen, our new whipping boy... (Now Watts is gone)

Sorry but he has been whipped in his own right for quite some time now.  Watts had nothing to do with it.  No closer to looking like a goer at AFL level than he did 28 matches ago.

I saw him kick 6 goals in the first half against the Box Hill hawks last year. The boy has got it...

I only saw the highlights, but Box Hills manning up and defence appeared very messy and he seemed to be playing on a frustrated slow spud of a defender too. You'd want to have a handful of 4-6 goal games to put forward a case that he has got it though? Hopefully the first half of the VFL this year he does just that.

He took about 4 pack marks that day, kicked them from anywhere. The full back was a Hawthorn player....

Well at least Dom Tyson won't miss a target now Spud Wagner is in.

Fogerty looking good and making an impact tonight...

This is when you know you're in trouble. O'Brien is an ordinary player who can take a nice grab from time to time but lacks the all round game and will never make it as a result.

Hence my comment "from the limited exposure I've had to him)"  i.e. O'Brian.  But O'Brien wasn't even clucking his grabs when we played the 2016 (granted it was a shiity wet game).  Also I get how the mode game needs pretty reasonable mobility (which Weid actually seems to have in spades for a guy his size), but I really still think you want your key forwards taking a good contested mark, otherwise you would just have a team of Jeff Garlets.

Think you are missing my main point about big guys typically taking longer.

I always loved CCR.

I am in the camp that says to give him more time to develop before pointing him to the door. I think he has the potential to become a handy player for us. it is great that he has the opportunity to develop at the proper pace rather than be thrown into a 'sink or swim' situation.

The context I put his situation into is to look at the development of Gawn. He was drafted 6 years before Wied and is 6 year older. it is not until 2 1/2 years ago in mid season 2015 that it clicked for him that he may have the game to be something above average.

I could see the same sort of development profile for someone like Sam Wiedeman. To me he just looks like a person that is going to take longer to mature.

FWIW this topic wasn’t designed to create a new whipping boy thread. I liked what I saw from him at the back end of 2016 and I can see talent in him. I just find it strange that a high draft pick entering his 3rd year had such little written about him.

He may just be someone we have to be patient with, but with TMac our I hope he views this as an opportunity to find his way back in the team.

For the most part I would suggest that it was the summer spent in the rehab group.  As he’s never been considered a chance for JLT or round 1, he’s just fallen out of the write-ups.

Hopefully when he strings some games together, he’ll set tongues wagging.

You know what I'm saying. He might have been heir to the throne for a while. Watts was king for 5 years... Probably 10.

The king is dead. Long live the king.

6 disposals 2 goals in a losing team.

Weideman in his debut game had 13 disposals 2 goals, was hampered by a corked thigh in the second half and we won...

Now let me think a bit before I write a mindless statement.

Yep, I got it... Weideman looked good and made an impact.

There are some plonkers on here but some really stand out from the pack...

Curnow seemed a more obvious choice, but Weidemann seems to be a completely different type of tall forward. I expect his selection was very deliberate. And considered.

I absolutely trust our recruitment and development these days, so I reckon he’ll make it. Perhaps not this year though, in the years to come.

It’d be interesting to know what they are saying about him internally though.

How long before some nuffy says we should have kept Watts and traded Weid

Chat with Olisik. He seems to wish we selected every player in the draft except the ones we actually picked.

I was thinking of Weid on Friday night watching Essendon as I was focused on James Stewart up forward. Is big, presents well and has some good hands.

He didn’t show any more than Weid other than some flashes last year as a 23 year old.

He is finally starting to make an impact but it’s taken a long time. He’s playing in a role which is exactly what we want from Sam imo.

I still have faith but it’s going to take another two years and then he will be a goer!!

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?

It was only a preseason match but the new look Demons spearheaded by new coach Steven King looked impressive as they put on a clinic against perennial cellar-dwellers North Melbourne as they cruised to an 80 point victory at Casey Fields.
