Sunday at 3.20 sucks but could have been worse could have been sat in Cairns or at at the kitty cats ground.

Can u imagine the build up with the bald one returning for his first game.  God help us.

Two oldest clubs in the comp. My only gripe is that it's not the opening game of the season every year, as i've always said we should play them first up in our heritage guernsey's. Fingers crossed we don't play again at Simonds.

An ideal early line-up of games (the Geelong & Richmond home games are locked in) ...

Round 1 March 25 ... vs Geelong (60k+ crowd)

Round 2 March/April ... ???

Round 3 April... vs Blues or Hawks?

Round 4 April ... ???

Round 5 April 24 ... vs Richmond (85k last season)

Round 6 April 29 ... (A) Essendon?

Playing the Bombers on the Sunday following the ANZAC midweek fixtures is a logical outcome given the limited rest. The Pies & Tigers would possibly play each other on the same Sunday as well (for the same reason)

However,  because the Tigers/Pies game would need the big arena,  we'd probably end up playing Essendon at Docklands on the Sunday as the away team (again)

The other alternative would see all 4 aforementioned teams play on the prior Saturday (or Friday) and if that happened,  we'd have the weekend off after the ANZAC eve clash.

If the 4 teams played on the weekend prior,  Richmond could play the Pies on the Friday night and we could finally get that home game against the Bombers on the Saturday afternoon.

Whichever way it goes,  a 4 or 5 day break between games is likely but if our opponents are in the same boat,  it's fair for both sides.

Saying we are playing lions at gabba in round 2, so you would assume we get a home game round 1

If that's the case I really hope the game is late in the day or night match. No doubt the AFL will schedule a 2:10 start in 30+ degrees humid Brisbane sunshine. Bet on a six day break to follow.

The suns at the Gabba ? Oh and why would they play a home game Perth Stadium ? Your post is seriously deluded.

They cannot use Metricon for the start of the season due to Commonwealth games

So it's a Sunday afternoon but shaping as a Marquee clash - we are hosting Geelong at home, 3.20pm on Sunday March 25th, in an unveiling (all going to plan) of the two boom recruits of the trade period, Lever & Ablett.

http://m.afl.com.au/news/2017-10-26/eagles-swans-to-ignite-perth-stadium-in-r1-2018

An interesting choice, given Collingwoods reported lobbying for a home clash vs us as their first up.

Happy to have the cats first up but really hope no return trip later in the season to their dungheap.

Don't mind it. At least it's a home game which pj wanted.hopefully everyone is up and fit and we can field our best 22.

So we get ablett r1. Imagine the cats ferals when he gets his first touch.

So does lever go to Hawkins?  He can match him and Hawkins does always perform against us.

Our Round 1 game in 2018 is a home game against Geelong at the MCG on Sunday March 25 @ 3:20pm.

AFL Round 1, 2018

Thursday, March 22

Richmond v Carlton, MCG, 7.25pm

Friday, March 23

Essendon v Adelaide, Etihad Stadium, 7.50pm

Saturday, March 24

St Kilda v Brisbane Lions, Etihad Stadium, 3.35pm

Port Adelaide v Fremantle, Adelaide Oval, 4.35pm

Gold Coast v North Melbourne, Cazaly’s Stadium, Cairns, 7.25pm

Hawthorn v Collingwood, MCG, 7.25pm

Sunday, March 25

Greater Western Sydney v Western Bulldogs, Canberra, 1.10pm

Melbourne v Geelong, MCG, 3.20pm

West Coast v Sydney, Perth Stadium, 7.10pm

Tough way to start the year but hey it’s not in Geelong.

A word of advice for the AFL...those fixturing times are a mess. If you want to grow the game you need to be attractive to those who are not yet locked in. Start by getting some regularity into timeslots to make it easier for people to know when games will be on. Three different starting times between 7.00 pm and 8.00 pm in just one round of football?  And the four day games all with different starting times. Seriously?

Will be interesting to see how we play Lever.  At Adelaide he had Talia taking to "big" forwards, which allowed Lever to do his intercept so well.  Could see Frost lining up on Dork-ins with Lever just picking him off all day.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
