Balic might surprise.  He has more skill and more upside than Harmes and ANB.  I also agree with some that Vanders is a lock.

He might but he has played 4 games in total and there is nothing to suggest he is best 22.

It's a bloody good team.

I'd have Tyson ahead of Vince, but will be fascinated to see how it pans out if Viney is available.

I think Fritsch and Hannan will both play.

Brayshaw and Harmes are the other two right on the cusp, but I like both.

It's hard to get 23 into 22.  Someone will be unlucky.

The older Lever gets, the more he'll bulk up too. I see him following a similar trajectory to Rance, except without the years of rubbish and turnovers.

Completely agree with this post and Lever's composure with ball in hand adds to the stabilisation of our defensive line too.

Agree, although I'm not sure i would want him to bulk up certainly not at the expense of his mobility and flexibility.

He has Rance like qualities.

A huge asset with quality defenders around him.

We have the makings of an exciting defence that on paper could be the best going around.

I know Viney is our captain and that he sets the benchmark for intensity (especially early in games), but I would have trouble leaving out someone like Harmes, Vince, Tyson, Hannan or Fritsch for him in round 1 given his lack of preseason. It is a long year and he needs to be at his peak in September. I doubt Goodwin will take the risk unless he plays a full game in the VFL next week.

I’m a big fan of Garlett’s but with the drafting of Hannan and now Fritsch this must his first year since he got to Melbourne that Jeffy is feeling some pressure to perform week in, week out. Can’t be a bad thing.

Having a change of thought.  Dees play a 7 man defence, so I think Vince will get a gig, which may be handy if Dangerfield spends a bit of time forward.

Had a chat to my Brother today and he'd leave Harmes out.  As much as I like Harmes I tend to agree.  He might be the unlucky one.

I think the combo of Petracca, Garlett, Hannan, Fritsch is too many forward line specialists, with only Petracca likely to spend good amounts of time in the middle. So one of Garlett, Hannan and Fritsch should make way for Harmes (who can also play forward), as Harmes can roll through the middle as well...

Garlett can rotate through the midfield in bursts.

True, I feel Garlett, Hannan or Fritsch and Harmes is better balanced, as I see the three former as more specialist forwards, I like Harmes and Hannan's grunt and physicality.

It's a tricky one.

I was about to write the same thing. We don't to limit our run.  Melksham will also be playing predominantly fwd.

For me, one of Hannan or Fritsch should miss.  Hannan is fitter, better defensively so I would not play Fritsch even tough he has shown some nice glimses

Peedo is going to be STIFF if he misses but I can't see a spot for him with T Mac and Hoges playing.  maybe with only lever and O Mac down back he could be a bench/utility?   def/fwd/ruck??

Seeing these teams has me pumped for round 1.  I tried to do one but it was too hard. A good feeling.

I have a feeling Viney's gonna get up for round one...

FB:     JETTA               O.MCDONALD .      HIBBERD.

HB:     LEWIS .              LEVER .                   HUNT .

C:        SALEM .             JONES .                  HARMES .

HF:      PETRACCA .     T.MCDONALD .       MELKSHAM.

FF:      GARTLETT .       HOGAN .                 HANNAN .

Foll:    GAWN .               VINEY .                    OLIVER .

Int:      BRAYSHAW .       VINCE .        NEAL-BULLEN.     TYSON.

There's obviously a question mark over Viney and possibly one over Lewis.

I've left out Fritsch, but he's breathing down the neck of Hannan, ANB and Harmes.

Geelong is one of the few teams with a genuine gorilla power forward in Hawkins.  In know we have a zone defence, but I'm concerned there isn't a big bodied defender to anchor that zone.  Wouldn't be shocked to see Frost line-up for round one.

Emergency/unlucky: FRITSCH, FROST, PEDERSEN, MAYNARD, BUGG, STRETCH

Vince very close to losing his spot to Harmes in my team if they continue playing him out of position in the back line.

Harmes > Tyson.

Harmes offers our side so much more. Quicker, better skills, more dangerous around goal, a threat in the air.

The love for Tyson is over the top.

You're comparing apples and oranges.  Harmes provides outside run, while also being hard at it, which is why I like him, and Tyson is a clever inside mid.

With Petracca and even Oliver spending time forward it makes Tyson more valuable due to his ability to win clearances.

They're not competing for a spot in the 22.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
