Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Article of Koch's expectation of players

I'm almost willing to put his comments down to being a frustrated, hurting, supporter. But then i think he's a [censored] of rhe first order. Watching that game, the Port players all tipped in, it was a furious game, you think Dixon wanted to kick 5 points, i didn't see too many passengers this is the sort of comment that when player are hurting would make them say F U ... if i was coach I'd be pi$$ed. Dude has a record of being a windsock just like Kennett.

Not sure it was meant to be made public, but he has clear expectations on what he wants from the clubs players which I like.

He should be keeping his comments to himself about on field stuff

When the Chicago Blackhawks got swept in the first play-off series of the NHL last season the general manager of the organisation came out two days later and labelled the loss as unacceptable. He put the onus on the coaching group and players.

A month later, young star players along with seasoned veterans were traded to other teams. Assistant coaches were also told to look elsewhere.

I would like to see more of this in the AFL,  our boss should have come out and expressed his disappointment at our finish and labelled it as unacceptable.

There is no "good effort" in American sports and I love it. If you fail you get told you are not good enough.

I don't mind the comments form Koch, yes they had a dip but it wasn't enough and he told them as such.

Imagine Demonland if Tommy Bugg had kicked 5 points in an elimination final.

He'd be on the trade table no doubt about it, and he basically is for doing the same in past matches and not providing some strong counter-memories for why he shouldn't be up for trade. (Ie he's not a [censored] forward, and he's not a [censored] tagger)

I'm sure the Port players must enjoy having this narcissistic [censored] making useless comments to the media rather than keeping it in-house.

and this is where the formula is inherently wrong...the players get umbrage at what...??

They want to be the tail wagging the dog ( club )

Players are widgets. The club is what its REALLY about.

Whilst somewhat kneejerk I dont mind the general sentiments uttered here.  Its about premierships...not just being OK Melbourne aspires to "OK"    doesnt always even get there ffs

The speed with which this made it to the media makes me suspect it was Koch that leaked it.  Sounds like he's covering his own ass...

That or otherwise known as getting on the front foot.

I actually prefer Kochies sentiments to the wallowing self pity like mutterings of Bartlett.

It's an inexact science with lots of variables. Injuries, umpires decisions etc.

He wears his heart on his sleeve like most of us and have been guilty of blowing of steam before engaging brain myself.

Did prefer their level of commitment to ours however. That's the bit that bugs me.

Port Adelaide had the luxury (like Richmond) in having a full list to pick from all year & a home final.   I would, as a supporter, been absolutely devastated with that loss.  Charlie Dixon gave everything but he is a forward and his kicking was abysmal...most of those shots were extremely gettable.  You cannot compare our loss to Collingwood as similar to that loss.  If we had had anything close to a full list all year , I have no doubt we would have finished top four. You need everything going for you to make finals & Port certainly did & to lose to West Coast proves that an easier draw & no injuries got them into finals but really "they just ain't that good" !

No problem with that, but wasn't it 'leaked' to the media'?

But... he didn't say it to the media...

quite so...just a thought... Do you think it possible he made sure he said it in front of someone (s) who might well be  'relied" upon to let things get 'out '

That's the smart way to plausible deniability. And hes no bunny.

just a theory ;)

Jesus I'm in a quandary . Normally would  agree with the anger and fire but there was only a very questionable s..t free in it.

Going soft perhaps but  understand Koch's frustration.

In the end Port didn't have the best and most committed 22 players.

Like us they will have to work out  those who didn't die for the cause and [censored] them off.

Want to have a bloody good reason for 2nd chances IMO. Past behaviour normally a good indicated of future behaviour.

It wasn't leaked!  It was deliberate and calculating.  From the op's article link:

PORT Adelaide chairman David Koch has put his AFL club’s players on notice — play for premierships or play somewhere else...The Power chairman spoke of his blunt warning at a supporters’ function after the Power’s heartbreaking extra-time elimination final loss to West Coast at Adelaide Oval.

Koch has form on this:  Last year he publicly chastised and embarrassed his captain and club leaders.  He continually puts a bunsen burner under his coach.

I have no problem with clubs turning up the heat on players (ours included) but his 'play for premiership or hit the road' motto doesn't need to shouted from the treetops.  More likely to demotivate than otherwise.

Unfortunately for Port he is as entrenched as President as Eddie is for the pies.  The difference is, in public Eddie backs his players, his coach and his club to the death.  (The only exceptions I can think of is if a player has lied to Eddie then he deals out appropriate punishment for that deed.  Then he backs them in again).

Koch can learn a lot from Eddie.

WCE didn't get a goal for over an hour. Twice Port got 2 goals plus in front and choked. They had the game won twice and basically gave it away both times, and at home.

Not only Dixon, but their skipper Boak missed three very gettable goals in the last half, and Wingard missed two. Leaders.

I'd be pretty dirty too.

Surely Koch would realise that Port only beat two top 8 teams for the whole season and they're just an average side.

Can see the argument both ways.

My gut instinct at the time was that his comments were inappropriate.

Were the players committed? Yes

Did they play their guts out? Yes

DId they make some skill errors/miss opportunities to win the game? Yes

Were they unlucky to lose? Yes

Would the players be hurting badly? Yes

At the end of the day, they were beaten by 1 free kick. By an umpiring decision.

I guess my feeling is that people don't respond to a roast, headmaster type tirade. The days of administrators and coaches bawling out their players is long over. It's almost personally insulting for it to be said or inferred that the players weren't sufficiently committed or weren't desperate enough. Sure they threw  away opportunities to win the game but that's a different thing. If Charlie Dixon had kicked accurately they would have won. End of story.  No different if Jessie Hogan had kicked 3 Goals, 5 points, missed a goal after the siren and we lost by 5 points.

Koch was obviously angry post match but that's normal. He is also a publicist and egotist. Most of his working day, it's about him. He is a Jeff Kennett type that likes to blow his own trumpet and be in the limelight. Like Kennett, this behaviour does more harm than good.

Did the players need a lecture from their President? I suspect not.

Did the players need their coach to talk to them about their mistakes and missed opportunities ? Yes

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.
