I'm sorry if you can't get around the paywall, but Beveridge confirms in this article that they ARE trading Stringer and that it's in the best interests of the club.

I don't think we will be a part of this trade at all, but it's still huge to think that they are trading someone so flawed, yet so talented.  Reckon someone like the Bombers will pounce on him and stick him in the forward line with Daniher, which will have BT frothing at the mouth.

I find it a bit strange that a club would telegraph it that openly.

It's so prospective buyers don't try and low ball the Bulldogs, now they know he won't come cheap.

Sure. But it is also a bit like an executor's or liquidator's auction: the bidders know that a sale will be made.   Could have the reverse effect and keep bids down a bit.

Wow.  Not so long ago an 'untouchable',  would have thought.  Hope we do our due diligence and make the right call.  We dont need any weatherboard 'fixer-uppers' with a quirky features and vendors set to sell.  We need to find the 'hidden gem' that will add straight away to our system and structure.

Absolutely. A buyers market.

For Sale:  second hand forward with only one previous owner. Low kms on thw clock. Works. Most of tbe time. End of 1st round draft pick ono

Rumour has it that he is damaged goods, comes with a raft of 'off field antics' and is just slightly more intelligent that J.Carlisle so he has avoided putting too much in his snap-chat stories.

If we got him, we would be going backwards in our plan of getting the right type of footballers into our club.

(my take ) I think its just Pups on the front foot. They would rather you KNOW Stringer is for sale...so make an offer as opposed  skirting around the boundary during nuf nuff week and taking too long.  Footiscray want they're dollar early so they know what they can go forward with at the Circus.

Who's that Dustin Martin?

Stringer is a high end 23 year old talent with a premiership and an all-australian next to his name.

I find it staggering to see the trends of negativity that arise when certain (or any) players arise for trade. I only have to look as far as the Tom Mitchell or Tom Rockcliff thread this time last year. Any and every excuse in the book gets raised. What I don't know is if it's a Melbourne fan, or just a footy fan thing.

I have no doubt that the club could improve his off field problems, if any. Just like they did with Garlett. It's also a part of maturing.

If the club don't join the hunt, let alone inquire, it would be a crying shame.

Not sure that Stringer is the answer to our prayers, but agree with ignition's post above. You don't overlook players of that quality just because they aren't choir boys. Just one example, but I would hate to think we picked Weideman over Curnow because Charlie got picked up for drink driving. We are simply not in a position to knock back elite talent.

It sounds like WB players have had enough.  Mitch Wallis was quite forthright last week:

"Time will tell, we've all gone our separate ways now so I think the trade period is not for another three or four weeks and there will probably be some conversations which we're pretty well aware of to decide his future...If he decides to stay, he'll stay for a long time. And if he doesn't, well, good luck to him".

And there is a bit of chat about players not wanting to play with him:  https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/david-king-and-mark-maclure-say-the-western-bulldogs-have-made-a-strong-call-in-looking-to-trade-jake-stringer/news-story/5bcb11edcae413c88f124851adb3f031

Off field issues aside, if you can't earn your teammates respect there's not much room at a footy club.

This has caveat emptor writ large all over it!  Luckily mfc have a no d...head policy.  Our energies need to be focused on finals not on baby sitting a problem child and putting out spot fires.

I'm a bit tired of the comparisons to Dusty of two-three years ago, and the belief that this is a similar situation.  Firstly, Martin wasn't a superstar at that stage but was playing much better than Stringer has been the last two years.  Secondly, Richmond wanted him - they just weren't going to pay the earth to keep him.  Thirdly,, there weren't any questions about his professionalism as a footballer - it was more who he chose as his friends off-field and the issues that his father has had.  Even those questions weren't really legitimate; just because Martin has neck tatts and hangs out with other people with tatts like Swanny, doesn't mean he's off the rails!

I can see why clubs would be interested in Stringer but I just don't reckon he's what we need.  His football has been bog ordinary for 18 months and our culture has been transformed in the last three years.  Too big a risk to bring in someone who could compromise that culture very quickly.

Plus, he seems like a bit of a [censored], so he'd be a perfect fit at the Bombers.

Martin needed Choco Williams as a baby sitter for years. It clearly worked out but still, Dusty's issues are of a different type to Stringers.

Stringer sounds like a tool of the highest order.

I think our list managers would now have their eyes wide open

Can our coaching staff fix him, or rather guide him to fix himself?  If so, yes.  If no, no way.

I think we're all in for Lever, which probably puts us out of the race for Stringer.  He will command a first rounder and we'll be giving one up for Lever if he nominates us.

It sounds like Essendrug and Geelong are further along the line anyway in regards to trading for him.  I can't see us going after him.

If we got Stringer I would be happy, if we dont get Stringer I would be happy.

Happy in the knowledge BMac would have a good knowledge of the kid and how it would play out at the MFC.

My mail is that it's targeted at their western suburbs fan base. They're giving them the message that their internal rumblings in the latter part of the season are all traced to one source, which they're now dealing with. Just like they did the last time something similar happened.

Reading between the lines, the club could have been a bit concerned by certain journos pushing that Stringer is just the tip of the iceberg. Their message is, in effect, that Stringer is the iceberg.

This, by the way, is without knowing anything about what Stringer is supposed to have done. But whatever is was, it apparently had a really corrosive effect.

I'd hope our ex-Dogs contingent have enough good contacts at the Dogs to advise us to keep well away.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
