I'm a Goody fan, but he's put a target on his back with this decision.  Unlike others, I really think it's a Goody/Macca decision and not necessarily an all FD decision.

I'll back him in, but there will be heat if he falters.

Blah blah blah. ...this thread is bordering on rediculous.  Yes, Jack loves the MFC as he knows nothing else and suits his private school, Bayside lifestyle. Life has been comfortable for Jack at the MFC...however, his on field performances and training standards have been below that of an elite footballer for years. After many of our losses over the last 9 years, many of Jack's recent fan boys have been the first to lambast the bloke and call him weak, soft and more. When Jack announced that he wanted to stay a Dee and that he loved the club, a lot of supporters changed their tune and fell in love with Jack. Why? Because the MFC has been devoid of such loyalty and passion for years. We've seen no 1 picks walk out...had no real leaders for years, had a group under Neeld that cared little for the club, its history or its supporters. In Jack we saw genuine care for our club, it's culture and us, the supporters ..endearing to many. The bashing stopped and we looked favourably on our new favourite son and forgave the weak efforts at the contest given week after week..the dropped chest marks under no pressure, the one handed tackling efforts...and for a moment were blinded ....

Take  a breath and remember the frustration you felt for many years...a kid with plenty of potential has gone for a pack of peanuts..but you cannot carry influential members of a team forever..especially when they do not work hard on the track or commit to the contest....every moment counts....

A chapter ends and a likable young man leaves. Move on. The club knows best. The leadership group are driving standards. Trust where we are headed

If we were a premiership team, and Watts was an integral part of the success, I could understand if there was some residual backlash from his teammates. The Whale Roberts being traded from Richmond, and Bradbury and Carey from Essendon, are examples where trades had an underlying impact on the playing group. But these teams had multiple premiership success behind them.

The MFC is a team that hasn't played finals in 11 years, and is still seen as mentally fragile. If the players arc up because the FD want to weed out players who don't exhibit elite standards of professionalism, then we will go backwards. But that falls on the players, not the FD.

Spoke to a friend who taught Sam Weideman as the resident phys ed coach, in VCE last year or the year before? Not sure what year but he spoke to Sam last week and his comments were that Sam couldn't work through this issue. Sam thought Jack is the ultimate club player, everyone loves him and Sam thought he was performing. And OK I can see this as part of the problem identified by Goodwin.

The main thing here is that the FD has a management plan in place to reduce the collatoral damage of Watts treatment and the move amongst the kids.

We don't have to go around in circles; the FD is not what I am critiquing. They can do whatever they want (should the board approve).

I am just simply attempting to arrest this notion that 'MFC - Watts =  [Insert Awesome Result/Process here: Flag, Professionalism, etc].

I expect us to be top 4 contenders next year - and it isn't a 'Goodwin Ultimatum' that a couple on here think should happen after this trade -it is because we are a very good team that should have won 15 games last season and we just recruited the best 21 year old defender in the game, and we will have the natural improvement of our most talented players (and the appearance of our star FF).

Jack Watts = Draft pick #31 or even lower ( A 17 year old kid in a shallow draft). Might be a thought if Jack was 33 and we were rebuilding. How long before we stop looking at the far away future instead of present time. We have been rebuilding for a bloody long without success. QED.

If we were only targeting pick 31, why not trade Garland (contracted) instead of Watts (contracted)? Seems to me less than astute? ? (Even if we later pay-out Garland, re-watching Watts highlights posted today on the MFC convinces me the removing Watts from our armoury when there are others on the list incapable of what he can contribute is a very high-risk manoeuvre! ?

I can only assume that the Leadership Group drove this move, or at least sanctioned it. 

And that is the only way they are going to be able to manage the change of trading a popular player.

I don't have great concerns for the playing group - he isn't dead, he's in Adelaide... ok, that's not much better...

But they will get on with it and follow their leaders - how could you not follow Jack Viney?

Yep. Chalk and cheese compared to Watts. McDonald and Bruce didn't get drafted from the TAC, and had to work there butt off to make it. Both got the most out of their abilities. Fantastic examples to younger players. Watts has never been in the LG. 

The decision to cut McDonald was terrible, but the Bruce decision was based on length of contract. 

And I hope Sam Weid learns quickly that the ultimate club player is different to the ultimate club professional.

The depressing thing is that Sam does not understand why he was moved on, thought Watts was doing OK.  Surely you see that?  If this is true, then the communciation of the 'message' to the younger team members is a disaster.
