Thats very clever trading ( for Carlton )  effectively a freebie

Cap dump. Lobbe has a few years to go on around $500,000  a year. Blues take on his contract so get him for a nothing pick.

I'm looking forward to that Victorian midfielder joining us in the next 40 minutes!

Jake lever. Literally the best trade targets for the period. We win.

Port and Bombers have smashed trade week out of the park - especially Essendon. That is a good deal for Stringer. Credit to Dodoro, he held off until the last minute with this one. Bomber fans should be happy.

Yep, they are the clear winners. Carlton has done well getting quality picks in for the rebuild, SOS and Dodoro play hard ball and it shows in their results. Lessons to be learnt for next time for MFC

We have superior lists to both clubs. Lots to learn...

Don't disagree but what has that got to do the current trade period and who did most with what they had?

I think we are going for Gaff as a free agent next year. Could be a reason we wanted watts off our book.

Plus I like AVB to play the half forward role. Tough as nails and can take a grab.

Seems all you're doing is whinging and potshotting.

If you can't accept that the industry seems to think we've had another successful trade period, that's your perogative, but I hardly think SOS is a great model.

Having said that there's always something to learn from others in trade period, but don't insinuate we haven't done well too.

We've just picked up arguably the best player from the 2014 draft, certainly top 3 with Petracca and Heeney.

When is the last time a club got such a quality 21 year old out of another club ?

The Lever deal by itself makes this trade period a huge success and without question the best deal we've done in 20 years (Jeff White) and I suspect will be our best trade ever.

If we win a flag it will be.

Interesting that we didn't target Matthew Lobbe from Port as a reserve ruck and freebie bonus to make the Watts trade look a little better value.

Meanwhile, Adelaide have effectively traded Lever for Gibbs. Obviously the Crows are looking for another bite at the Grand Final, so different circumstances. But I'd be really irritated if the Demons had given up that much for Gibbs, and I'm a big fan.

Another way to look at it; at the same price, we gained our likely best tall defender, aged 21, while the Crows gained an equivalent quality midfielder, aged 28.

It's a bit easier when you have plenty of cap room -  now and projecting forward - and best 22 spots available.

Would you have been happy to wear the last 2 years of Lobbe's $500,000 a year contract, cause that is what the Blues are wearing, for a backup Ruck? That ain't no freebie. The Blues can wear the contract cap wise because they don't have many players worthy of increased contracts in the next couple of years.

You seem a little defensive / sensitive to criticism of the club on this occasion AF - its not a pot shot its debating. Industry thinks we paid overs and we did. Would love SOS doing the negotiations for us with Taylor and co doing the scouting and selecting of the players

Fair point, it is a big chunk of money. I figured it would be the alternative to agreeing to pay a share of Watts' contract. (Though that detail still isn't publicly confirmed as far as I'm aware)

Its about quality not quantity. You seem to just want action.

Lever did all the work... he fell in our lap. I would not be patting our guys on the back for getting it done. Joe the goose if there ever was one

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
