WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BEN BROWN

That's a underestimation of Brown's abilities, you don't kick 60 goals a year if you have to have the ball kicked straight on your  chest, do you think that Norths midfielder are that great of kicks, some forwards just know where to lead to take marks, also he averages 1.6 contested marks a game, which is 0.6 better then Jeremy Cameron. And for marks in 50 we average 9 marks a game, which is 1 more then the AFL average, we where 8 th for scoring, it's a bit of a myth that we are the worst side going into forward 50, there are 2 parts with entrance into forward 50, good kicks and also players q0qcp who know how to get in the right spots to take marks. Brown and weed can work well together, two different types of forwards.

Great post.

I would argue the forward structure and the speed in which the play has unfolded far outweigh the importance of being able to kick laser guided missiles to leading forward.

Teams that generally look good going inside 50 have usually broken the opposition's defensive structure earlier in the play and have a much easier kick to make.

You can't really blame a guy for turning the ball over or bombing it when there are 10-15 opposition players inside your forward 50.

Like others on DL I am warming to getting Brown.

I understand the logic that it may not work having Weid, Jackson and Brown all in the one forward line, but ultimately when you look at it, a key forward is our No.1 shortage on our list. Weid admirably filled the void from Rd 6-14 and took huge steps this season, but you have to have back-up plans. When you look at our list, we have depth now to cover injuries in almost any area except the key forward spot and the left-side wing. Brown and Isaac Smith solve the problem.

The issue now is making sure the Pies don't offer him way more and sway him. Given they have to re-sign De Goey then we should have more money available than them, and certainly if T-Mac left, the extra cash would clearly be available.

Then there is the issue of what can we offer that gets the deal done. Obviously pick 23 is not going to be quite enough and we most likely will have to send whatever pick we get for Preuss there way as well. The good thing is that this year's draft is a much bigger lottery, so losing a second-rounder probably won't make a massive difference for Tubby Taylor.

Look mate, I don't really care if we get him or not, but I'm not particularly swayed by the analysis of the football Einsteins on here.

We need another key forward and this guy averaged over 60 goals per year prior to 2020 and he's available pretty cheaply.  If the club thinks they can benefit from him in his prime then it makes sense to me.

Of course, I could try and overthink it and rationalise why it won't work, but I've got better things to do...

I just want to get better.  I can't imagine he makes us worse.

Just to be clear - I love Ben Brown. I've loved him since day one. I love his hair, and I love his fifty-metre run-up. I love how he kicks goals and I love how he catches balls with his long outstretched arms. I've often compared him to a labrador puppy, infinitely trainable and a no-fuss footballer and evidently stand-up guy. I love how the umpires love him and take pity on him as well and give him free kicks when the backmen do mean stuff to him. It pained me for a long time that we overlooked him in favour of JKH. I can't believe we nearly have him in our team - a dream I never thought possible. The narrative on here that he can't play football outside of being a lead-up forward and other grumbles are ridiculous and I have no idea where that psychology stems from. We may be gifted the most solid goal-kicker in recent times and people say no. Okay. Go TMac yay!

If this guy gets Fritsch out of the effing square then I am all for it.

Balancing Brown and Weideman may be an issue, it may mean Weideman further up the ground which I think suits him.

For the right price it is worth doing.

Yes definitely. He must be the same size as Cox and he knows how to play football!

He can mark and kick so he attracts a crowd of defenders.

This will free up weid who i think needs to get away from FF. He is a much better link man.

Fritch would also benefit from not being the second target.

Weid’s thing and Brown’s thing are the same thing! Come up to a flank to crash a pack when needed, otherwise be a big target inside 50.

We don’t need 2 guys doing the same thing

Except Weid  doesn't appear to be doing that job effectively

If we are to seriously consider Ben Brown we need to stipulate I'm the contract that he changes his ridiculous hair. I don't care how many goals he kicks if so have to see him walk 80 metres when lining up for goal with all eyes on him with his hair bobbing around.

He kicks goals.... something not a lot of our guys know how to do. For all I care he can wear pink boots, colored nail varnish and have more makeup than Marilyn Manson sing "The real thing" each time he kicks a major and wear his hair any God damn way he likes providing he kicks goals which he seems to be able to do!! Regularly!! Get him in! And when we get him in he will develop a CULT Following! Starting with me!

Why would North want to get rid of Brown, what is wrong with him?

They aren't going to get a lot for him, early third round pick maybe second, North have Larkin as a young developing tall but not ready to shoulder the load just yet.

It doesn't make sense unless there is an underlying issue that North know about.

Read back earlier in this thread. North and Brown had a falling out over off-field issues. They were not empathetic to his situation when he lost one of his babies. The club is fractured at all levels. They'll have a new coach next year, likely new board, likely 15+ list changes over off-season. They're a complete mess and shot themselves in the foot with Brown.

Whoever gets Brown will be getting a bargain.

I read that somebody said that Weed and Ben Brown are similar footballers?  They are not.  One is proven and capable of leading strongly, taking marks and kicking 60 goals a year......

Didn't Brown want to stay at North and this is driven by North to off load him.  Bloody strange, get ready Tassie the way North is going you could have an AFL team down there very soon.  They will be worse that GWS and Gold Coast when they entered the league, at least Essendon will still have a core group to help the young blokes out, North will have no one.

Wouldn't mind Fritsch moving to the wing if this happens - I thought when he played there a few seasons back he actually did pretty well.  On the otherhand, he's normally a good kick and had enough shots on goal to justify playing as a forward

'Worth doing?' Id' reckon. 1. We lack forwards. 2. The guy has finished 3, 2 2 in the Coleman and made the AA squad 3 years running. And people here think he's not worth picking up? Bizarre.

For a stretch of 9 games until we started playing every 4th day in tropical cyclones he did.

And when he had a capable player complimenting him in Jackson or even Tommy in a few games he looked very good. When Preuss - who can’t move, or Mitch Brown - who leads up beautifully but is gutless under a high ball - paired with him he struggled to find his role. If Brown takes Weid’s position and forces him in to a different spot he’ll struggle.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
