It's one of the few things I hate about the footy industry.

Most clubs have signed up to the responsible gambling charter but still pull in millions in pokies revenue.

Our broadcast deals are massive these days, would love for the AFL to place year on year targets for clubs to lose their dependency on pokies revenue and provide temporary support for clubs that need it.

If all clubs did it with AFL support, then no one has a competitive advantage and we can be genuine about our responsible gambling claims.

its disgusting.. i agree demons1958, how can clubs push their ethical position regarding gambling and still scrape the cream off the top? yuck. a reason that a few of my mates chose the roos instead of dees when they first moved to melbourne.

i agree with what everyone is saying about pokies. They are a blight on our society. It is however a vital income stream for the club. $10.3m* pretty much covers the entire total salary payments ($10.37m) for 2017. Our 42,000 members would contribute just over $5m at an average of of $120 per member.

We need to develop other income sources but in the meantime we unfortunately need pokies

It's not just the footy clubs, all sorts of businesses & companies have invested into these despicable revenue machines.  Your friendly neighborhood supermarket is right into them.

The whole gambling industry needs to be pegged back in a dramatic way but unfortunately, we're seeing it going the other way. 

The AFL could get all the clubs to sell out of these ventures but that isn't going to happen - we're dependent on the machines but so are all the other clubs (save for North Melb and the 'Company-store' clubs)

I'm all for free enterprise but I'd rather see the end of these dastardly contraptions.  They are a scourge on society.

Until the AFL funding model changes we need the income.  North have o gambling income which is the right thing to do ,but what is their financial position?

I've got no problem with the club making money out of pokies. For most it's just a harmless pastime, and for the minority that do have a problem, whether or not the machine is owned by a footy club or not won't make a lick of difference.

personally i dont use them or like them. But unless they become outlawed people will use and abuse them. And i would rather some of that money going into the footy club than see it lining the pockets of the Bruce Mathiesons of the world.

Congrats to Hawthorn for topping the list of parasites on families.

They've also managed to take profits from the Western suburbs and use them on ytheir own facilities when theses moneys were earmarked for the Hobsons Bay community.

I agree, but it's also worth remembering that they made a pretty packet by selling them. Their finances are struggling and they may well feel the pressure again to relocate. I applaud their decision to not continue with pokies, wish all clubs could, but similar to the State govt we are addicted to the income stream. AFL would be wise to stop the hollow social justice talk, grow a pair and truly help clubs get away from them. Now that would be a noble legacy for Gill to leave

Now that you mention it I also remember, yeah, there have been statements at least as far as a 'general intent' on this. It is heartening to know that there is an ethical victory built into the future of financial confidence.

$1300 a year per adult in the western suburbs sample area. That's a crisis even if it is spread evenly between 'not addicted' 'social' gamblers.

Any income from pokies is a "gross" figure (in the worst possible sense of the word).

Would hardly call $1300 a year a crisis. That's $25 a week on a leisure activity. How much do you spend a week on leisure activities?
