btdemon 482 Posted May 27, 2017 Posted May 27, 2017 It was interesting to hear him interviewed after the game. He used all of the team cliches - "lucky to get on the end of a few" etc, etc. The fact that he is using the team language suggests that he has really "bought in". A couple of years ago he was much less focused about why he had a good game. He is really working for the team now and the chasing and tackling are really working for him. He must be aware that he is now in the top performers for "forward pressure" and that makes him feel pretty good. We are so lucky that he is happy in the Dees team environment. He's an enormously valuable player for us now. Our leading goal kicker and most reliable avenue to goal. He'll hopefully improve further when Hogan is back the the forward structure settles. 3 Quote
Watt Kent? 0 Posted May 28, 2017 Posted May 28, 2017 I reckon he and Frost for mine should be leading our BnF with Hibberd only short because he missed a few games Best season so far though Quote
ProperDee 1,698 Posted May 28, 2017 Posted May 28, 2017 As I said in another thread, Jeffy is actually a shy guy which tends to make him a confidence player. When that self belief kicks in, he lifts to another level. Add that to a "dry track" like last nights and the result is 5 goals and opposition defenders heads rotating 360 degrees trying to watch him. Just as mercurial as Betts and I think, quicker. On the Bluey voting as mentioned above though, I tend to think Clarry has them all covered at this stage! Quote

Lord Travis 10,819 Posted June 11, 2017 Posted June 11, 2017 Having a great year and has been a great pick up for the club. He always chimes in with goals, but his defensive pressure has improved dramatically this year. In the past it has been inconsistent, but it's clearly been a focus for him this season and it's paying off. Defenders sh*t themselves when he is around, like they used to when Aaron Davey was playing. He's also improved his body work in marking contests. For a small guy, he contests and uses his body remarkably well now and if he doesn't get a clear run and jump at the ball he is often able to body his opponent out of the contest and follow up at ground level to finish off his own work. Hope he is able to maintain this form. Keep up the hard work Jeffy! Quote

Jeffy is the first Demon (aside from Jesse Hogan who's kicked a few bags) to kick five goals in a game since Sam Blease in 2012. Actually...that wasn't so fun... How many "bags" has Hoges kicked? I can only remember one bag of 5, which was against the Saints at Etihad in ? 2015. Quote

Whilst Betts was ahead in more of the pure offensive categories, Jeffy performed well defensively. I noted that Jeffy is about 2 and a half years younger than Betts, so was curious what Betts output was at the same age, and whether Jeffy may be in for a comparable spike in output as he reaches a level of experience in AFL coinciding with a period of relative peak in physical condition. Betts age 28 year was 2014, his first year in Adelaide after Carlton allowed him to leave as a free agent, and the numbers below are Jeffys half season so far against a full season from Eddie (stat comparison from Footywire). beelzebub 23,392 Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 Jeffy is special. I think like this team as a whole he's really starting to click. Just seems 'on' for the most of the time. Very alert. Love watching his efforts. Very clever with ball. This will seem a possibly ridiculous thing to suggest but i reckon there's a belief growing and a vibe about the club that we are definitely destined for success and players are finding themselves at Melbourne to be part of this and enjoy it. He's another enjoying his footy 1 Quote
Deestroy All 14,266 Posted June 19, 2017 Author Posted June 19, 2017 Very switched on. Noticed watching the replay that he's constantly scanning the field and directing players to where they should be at stoppages, all the way at half back at times. Great leadership, and staying involved in a position that often players go missing. David King's mid-season AA forward 6 has Robbie Gray in it. Same amount of goals as Jeff, Jeff has 24 more tackles and one of the best pressure forwards in the league, which is what that position is all about these days. Too much emphasis on pointless possession stats Kingy. 5 Quote
Ron Burgundy 8,588 Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 I think I'm right in saying that we are the number one or two defensive pressure team in the comp, and Jeffy is the number one defensive pressure forward in the comp. Given how the game has evolved in 2017, that alone has got to put Garlett firmly in the mix for AA this year. Surely. Not to overlook goals kicked and general influence in the forward 50 etc. He simply has to be a serious candidate for AA selection (along with Hibberd, Jetta, Watts and Oliver). 3 Quote

In Harmes Way 7,869 Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 Just like Jayden Hunt, I'm up out of my seat whenever he gets the ball in fwd 50. He's just so dangerous. that kick v pies when he took the tap from Watts, ran toward goal and circled back in from the line, low pass at pace to Pedo with the outside of the boot (Hannan crumbed and goaled) was just sublime. ive got a serious man crush on Jeffy, he's something else. 1 Quote
Grapeviney 9,929 Posted April 5, 2018 Posted April 5, 2018 Thread deserves a bump after his sensational game on the weekend. And to think some on here wanted him dropped after one quiet game. He's still criminally under-rated, on this board and in the broader footy community. Jeff Garlett: 169 games / 299 goals Cyril Rioli: 187 games / 274 goals 13 Quote

Deeeeecent 0 Posted April 5, 2018 Posted April 5, 2018 Jeff has always been a goal kicker who mixes moments of brilliance with some inconsistency. One thing that he has certainly improved on in the past 12 months is his decision making. He seems to be making much better decisions with ball in hand. He is 'playing percentages' more regularly and providing better opportunities for his team mates. This wont be the last time that Hogan/Garlett pair up for 9(+) goal games. Quote
