Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

It is so nice to be genuinely excited again about the 'potential' of our list.

Who would you keep, and who would you omit?

I rekon there are only 9 in the 2000 that wouldn't be superseded,

Yze, Green,Schwarz, Neitz, Roberston,White (now 2nd ruck) Farmer, Leoncelli (under rated) and S.Febey - and I wouldn't have Trapper.

26 Daniel Ward 27 Anthony Ingerson 44 Alistair Nicholson
HB: 42 Peter Walsh 28 Matthew Collins 21 Steven Febey
C: 13 Adem Yze 22 Shane Woewodin 35 Anthony McDonald
HF: 18 Brad Green David Schwarz Stephen Powell
F: 24 Russell Robertson David Neitz (c) 33 Jeff Farmer
Foll: 34 Jeff White 43 Guy Rigoni 36 Andrew Leoncelli
Int: Brent Grgic 16 Travis Johnstone 47 Ben Beams
  46 Troy Simmonds

and on a side note - Jeff Farmer kicked 76 that year...

I'll take Ingerson over any tall back on our present list...

Are you basing this on their career output or 2000 seasons?

Must be the former as you've left out the brownlow medalist.

Our current team have achieved nothing yet. Haven't made finals, haven't even had a positive win loss ratio. It's utterly disrespectful to even compare them to a team that made a grand final and provided some of the best wins we've had in decades, as well as some brilliant individual performances (e.g. Woe winning a Brownlow, Farmer kicking 76 goals and tearing games apart).

That 2000 team was great. Our current team have a ways to go before even being considered anything more than average.

Ahh, the beauty of a hypothetical - its pub talk LT - surely it's ok to ponder these things. Not that I am getting ahead with the current list - because, you know, I've [censored] lived the past 40 years also with the pain and the suffering... was the intensity because I didn't include Travis ;)

Which is interesting when you consider how much we get stuck into someone like Tom McDonald for his kicking, yet Ingerson was an extremely average kick at best.  He was a terrific CHB though.

Lots of good memories of that year.  Hopefully we have another one like it just around the corner.

Whelan.      Ingerson.     Jetta.
Febey.         McDonald.   Yze.
Woewodin.  Viney.          Powell.
Watts.          Hogan.        Robertson.
Farmer.        Neitz.           Petracca.
Gawn.          Jones.          Leoncelli.

White.     Tyson.     Lewis.    Vince.

Based on their form/level in 2000, so apologies to Johnstone, Green, Ox and Bruce.

Petracca is lucky to be there, but it would be amazing to see him and Farmer standing either side of Neitz.

Based on 2000 form both Bruce and Green came into the side and were instrumental in winning finals and getting us into a Grand Final. As talented as he may be, Petracca has achieved nothing yet and isn't a patch on any of the players listed.

I don't disagree, and Bruce and Green went a long way towards winning us the final against Carlton.  However putting either of them in that forwards line probably makes it a little slow and top heavy- they'd be in competition with Watts and Robertson.

Green and Bruce of 2002-06 may have those two covered, but they weren't at that level in 2000.

And of course, it's all in fun and purely hypothetical... kinda like the stuff you find on an online supporters' forum.

I'd be very tempted to play Neitz at CHB.  He along with TMac and Ingerson would be a very handy set of tall defenders.  Then take your pick from Whelan, Jetta, Febey, Yze etc as smalls and you'd have a flag-winning defence.

I do have to say that it's a pity the timing wasn't slightly better.  Imagine having both Vineys in the one side.

Its a bit like comparing Daniher and Goodwin as coaches.

Fact is, all but about four of those players in the Grand Final team played long and respectable AFL careers.

Interestingly, for very few of those players was the grand final around a midpoint in their career. Most either had only a few more years left, or had only been around a few years by 2000. Main exceptions would be Neitz, Farmer, White, and Leoncelli. Essendon had maybe only a couple more players in that mid-career point, but a whole big mature group that played about four more seasons after 2000.

Got me to thinking about the present situation for us.

Let's imagine for a moment that things go approximately to plan for us, and in the next 2-3 years we reach a point where we are seriously contending.

We'd have just a few players in the Shane Crawford age range of 'win a premiership, retire happy' - Jones, Vince, Pederson, and Lewis.

Hibberd, Jetta and Garlett would be approaching or reaching 30.

Watts, Melksham, Gawn, T. McDonald, Vandeberg and Trengove would still only be around 27-28.

Pretty much everyone else would be feeling confident they still had more than half their career games left to play, but would also have 75-125 games under their belt.

It's more about biology than timing.

Powell was underrated IMO.

He was great for us in 2000- aggressive, big bodied, goal-kicking mid who stood up in finals.  Was devo when he crossed to stkilda, where he carried on doing the same there.

2000 was fun but I thought 1998 and 1994 were better seasons. At least in my life time I have more memories from those two seasons than I do from 2000. Think our 1994 had the biggest potential for greatness out of our best sides from the past 20-odd years.

I feel that in 1998 and 2006 we were a genuine chance to pinch a premiership.  In '94 no one could get close to west Coast and same goes for Essendon in 2000- they were both a cut above the nearest competition.

I'd suggest that the two best teams in a single year out of the last 40 years were probably Hawthorn in 1988 and Essendon in 2000. We timed our challenges for the wrong years.

I agree.

2000 was the only GF I've ever been to, and I came in knowing we didn't have much of a chance. I wasn't devastated when we lost, because I knew how good we'd be the next season.

Got to laugh... right?

No?

Yeah maybe not.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
