If the club believes this is the way to go, then I'll back it.  Would have been happy for Jones to stay as sole captain but they may also be looking at transitioning Viney into a sole captain role over the next few years.  I could see Jones stepping aside to prolong his career a little as well.

Either way, it makes little difference.  Good continuity in the group is great and we've now got some really strong leaders around the club.

I see a number of contingencies in this decision.

1 Rewards Viney for previous leadership initiatives he's undertaken and incentive to strive for higher goals

2. Shares the burden and allows both to still focus on their respective games.

3.  Should one of them go down with injury - heaven forbid - the other will - hopefully - still be on the park.

4. An ability to cover media, sponsor and member commitments more broadly.

I don't mind this at all.

I love it! Congrats Jack.

Promoting our b&f winning, ultra professional, brutal ball winning son of a ledgend is a statement about how Goodwin and the team want to play and have leading them!!!

Since arriving, but especially since Jack levelled up with Rance for the Watts cheap shot, I've wanted Jack as Captain or Co-Captain.

Bloody good move.

Also, there were a heap of posters last year who were complaining about Jones' lack of leadership skills.  Now they'll probably complain about the dual captaincy role as well.

Some are never happy.

Grimes and Trenners were too young but under completely different circumstances.

in their defence Viney is alongside jones. Grimes didnt have that luxury. However i think vice captain would have been enough but i suposse thats just a name and the role likely isnt much different.

Jones was also on the list when Trenners and Grimes where capt.

Jack - I know you're salty, but Jones was barely in the leadership group when yourself and Trengove were given the role of co-captains.  This is totally different.  We have more accomplished leaders at the club who can support Viney - Jones has done it for years, as has Bernie and Jordan Lewis.

That's not a knock on your good self, and thanks for your contributions to the club, but this is much, much different and you know it.

Just sayin'.

So? He wasnt an experienced captain to take the bulk of the stress at the time. Jones will be able to take the majority of the stress (edit: particularly after a loss). I would think of it as a 75%-25 role for jones and that might transition over the following 3-4 years. Im sure if we dropped jones for say Viney and Hogan people would be angry

As a massive Jones fan, I'm disappointed with this move. Nothing against Viney, who will be a great captain in time, but I can't see that this is anything other than a backhander to Jones. Given that Jones has only had two years as sole captain, I would have thought he should be allowed to continue to improve on his own.

Otherwise, the only question mark over the leadership group is around Vince. I'm not sure that he has shown much leadership in recent times with multiple reports / suspensions, and a general lack of discipline. A group of 5 may have been enough, unless a younger player such as Tyson was moved in.

Why does every topic that is slightly contentious have to turn into a pissing contest

Personally I don't like co captains, but congratulations to Jack for achieving what was probably a boyhood dream and he has earned it

Lewis in our Leadership Group makes me gooey inside

I would have liked to have seen Jones as the sole captain with Viney as his deputy; same matchday roles, but keeps the romance of the captain leading the team. Has has pulled us through the tough years and I knda feel he should be the man standing the front when we take the field.

With that said, Viney is being groomed to take the reins in two or three years so this certainly a Roos/Goodwin preparation.

Viney as captain makes sense, but it feels too early. Perhaps 1 year as Vice under Jones would have been better.

I have never been a fan of co-captains because there is simething inspirational about investing the team understanding of leadership into a person. He PERSONIFIES the aspirations of the club.

And the story of Jones' leadership growth under Roos is amazing, and beleive he remains the standout leader at the club.

I don't like co-captains because it symbolises weakness in the people chosen. In other words, having gone from sole captain to one of two co-captains, the club has, in effect, said Nathan Jones isn't good enough to be a captain on his own. I'm sure others will disagree, but if Nathan Jones was indisputably a quality captain, would we have even contemplated having Viney (or anyone else) join him in the role?

What a load of crap!!!! Sydney had 3 captains and won a flag

Who's to say it wasn't Jones idea, with 2 young kids at home he might have put it to Goody himself.

Y'all are far too scarred by the last time the club appointed co captains.

We are a club of substance now. Our list is infinitely better in terms of quality and quality experience. Our coaching group are arguably one of the best in the league. There is absolutely no comparison to the Melbourne of old and given that, I have no idea way people even raise an eyebrow about this announcement.

GWS, Hawthorn St Kilda and Sydney have all had them without a problem.

In fact I can't think of a team whereby the co-captaincy has had a negative impact at any club other than ours during our dark period.

Jack Viney is unquestionably better prepared, in better form and has a far greater support network around him in comparison to both Grimes and Trengove.

There is absolutely nothing to worry about. View this appointment like the succession plan we put in place with Goody/Roos.

It's the sameeeeeeee.

Im not saying JV is too young and neither was Grimes. More making a point that it wasn't age that held Grimes back. More to do with support and team at the time, while everyone jumped on the age factor.

Jack Viney has been a leader since he arrived at the Club. His professionalism and intensity at training, his aggression and never say die attitude on the field plus his ability to listen and evolve his game to the point last year he was recognised as our best player at a mere 70 games. Plus he'd have won the bluey in 2015 if not for injuries.

The kid's a champ on the rise and deserves the promotion. Jones too deserves to retain the Captaincy, so a good decision all around.

I am a massive JV fan and don't want to take anything away from his appointment, but I still see Brayshaw as an important future leader of the club. If leadership can be quantified, the kid has got it in spades.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
