I know this will get howled down, but this is a guy who i think would have captained the Hawks in 2017, is co captains with Nathan Jones totally out of the question? obviously the players vote and all that and i am usually against new players getting in but surely this is a different set of circumstances, talking about a genuine A grade player and A grade leader.

Just no need. Jones does a perfectly fine job and continuity has been important. To put it in coaching terms:

Captain: Jones - Paul Roos
Vice captain: Viney - Simon Goodwin
Leadership group: Lewis - Brendan McCartney

Co captains is a bit far and would come across as him being yet another messiah for us. Would be a lock for the leadership group and hopefully can be a confidant/mentor for chunck.

Certainly nothing he has said so far indicates he is coming in with a demanding and arrogant attitude. Quite the opposite. He said he thinks Jones is a fantastic captain, and he will do all he can to support him. And is excited about mentoring the Demons "wonderful" young list particularly as we move towards finals.

Another thing we should also be delighted about is that he was incredibly impressed by the Dees, and it was only club he wanted to go to. That is amazing considering where we have come from.

Very significant in the evolution of the Club we love!

Demonland if I'm not mistaken I think you'd agree we should add Todd Viney to this list.  Todd is in charge of list management and is largely responsible for the negotiations between clubs.

Josh is great but like the pig who is accountable for the bacon, Todd is accountable for list management.

Agreed, Todd has clearly been fantastic. But the one thing I've always wondered is who overruled who in the Toumpas v Wines debate all those years ago. :D Was it Neeld or Todd?

Jason Taylor, please.

Sorry @Demonland, I've opened a bit of a can of worms here. :P

Haha, the old Goody doesn't take the best picture, does he? As long as he's a gun coach. :D

Rapt with this deal. To get Lewis for 48 would've been a win in my book. The intangibles alone make Lewis better than a third round pick. Well played, recruiting team.

Nah, I agree with you, mate. I said it in another thread. I reckon co-captaincy with Jones is a strong chance. Also, love the DP. ;)

Stoked with this result (along with seemingly every other person on here).

Has there ever been a universally applauded event on Demonland..?

We've got some great people behind the scenes at the club; love Mahoney's justification for the trade: “Jordan is a fierce competitor who is driven to win, and those are qualities that you can’t have enough of at our footy Club,”   WELL SAID!

I'm not sure he does a perfectly fine job, otherwise we wouldn't be after players of Lewis' age (necessarily). I think there's a strong case to be made for co-captaincy. If not 2017, then 2018 if Lewis is slowing up too much.

Surely we went after Lewis because after Jones and a declining Vince there was nothing leadership wise to Viney and Gawn.

Previous leadership group members and senior players in Garland, Lumumba, Grimes Dawes, Dunn can't get on the park and at least 3 of them will be gone next year. All 5 should be if we could.

I guess I'd rephrase and say Jones does a good job in a very difficult situation not having a lot of help. He needs helper not to be replaced or have his title shared. 2018 will probably be the right time to make Viney captain not to give Lewis the job after 1 season when he only has 1 year left.

Absolutely brilliant stuff.  Not only have we added a quality player with experience and leadership skills, but we did so without giving up much at all.  That just doesn't happen all that often these days.  We've pulled off a bit of a coup with this one.

I can't wait for the 2017 season!!

Maybe I was a little unfair on Jones.

Now we just need Jordan to get in Roughie's ear and we can call the engravers.

To be honest he would be lucky to play again. Though I really hope he fully recovers and does play it just feels unlikely to happen.

    REDLEG PRIDE by Meggs

Hump day mid-week footy at the Redlegs home ground is a great opportunity to build on our recent improved competitiveness playing in the red and blue.   The jumper has a few other colours this week with the rainbow Pride flag flying this round to celebrate people from all walks of life coming together, being accepted. AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe
