I'm pretty sure the NRL got wind of the deal as a deal was not offered to Cronulla and the Government had to back out. Essendon were later offered the same deal as Cronulla but were too arrogant to accept.

I favour the latter argument 'br' ...

The risk of being caught using PED's is much much higher for a sportsperson in a sport that has stringent drug testing.  Would-be cheats in sports where there is token testing are virtually free to do as they please. 

Transparency has a cost when it comes to stringent testing ... the more that get caught has the effect of turning people off that sport.  So to keep the customers happy,  just do the token testing.  Works a treat.

I cant get behind the paywall but the headline contradicts the quoted text which says:  The AFL has joined ASADA in fighting a Freedom of Information request made by a member of the public seeking access to doping control forms 

Why would the AFL side with ASADA to fight release of info and at the same time threaten to spilt from ASADA if info is released.  Is there something in the article that explains the apparent contradiction?  If not pretty dumb of the HS to run with it.

Anyway, who is the AFL supposedly threatening?  It is up to the courts to decide what to released.   

A confused and not very logical person wrote that headline - Robbo perhaps?

Presume they are threatening to split from ASADA if ASADA is unable to prevent the FoI request through the courts. Essentially fighting along side them, but saying if it fails, we will part ways so that such a thing can't happen ever again...

EDIT: An FoI request can only be made to a Govt agency I believe? or possibly to an organisation that receives public money to fund it's operations. Can't quite remember the details.

I read it as a childish ambit gamble. The AFL is using this as either leverage or a 'reason' it should leave ASADAS overseeing. The Great Dil cant stand that it's not really his bst and ball. Has there ever been such a lacklustre fool in charge of this game ? I wonder.

I guess it depends how much money the AFL gets from the Fed Govt to conform to the WADA code.... if it's a couple of mil... the AFL can just cut back on some of the funding to the Gold Coast and Brisbane, and wear it.... however if the AFL was penalised through other means such as fed gov funding for grounds, sporting complexes and training facilities, perhaps it's a bit of a harsher pill to swallow.

Seriously, you could not make this crap up. First, an ambit claim to sue the AFL on behalf of Essendon, for "deceptive and misleading conduct". Must have had a serious irony bypass to even contemplate that. Second, the claimants seem to be getting legal advice of the same quality as James Hird ("Tiny chance of success, even if everything goes our way --- so what are we waiting for?"). Third, the AFL's conduct, including lack of support for ASADA and the laughably stupid verdict delivered by the AFL Tribunal (which ASADA appealed against to WADA, and won), was one of the major reasons that there was no smoking gun found at Tullamarine (although there was something that looked like a smoking gun, and smelt like a smoking gun, and felt like a smoking gun, but that everyone in the room swore was actually an elephant, because there was a sticky label on it that said "Elephant"). Fourth, the AFL are dumb enough to threaten splitting from ASADA (as if!) if certain documents come to light, which makes it apparent to Blind Freddy's dead cat that the AFL have something to hide. Surely that same dead cat could work out that the smart thing to do is to keep quiet and let the nongs who brought the case eventually come to the startling conclusion that this is a grand waste of time, energy and (lots of) money.

Sounds like there is an opera  or two in that lot, or perhaps a mini-series. Pass the popcorn, and whose shout is it anyway?
