Wont be playing finals, time to look to the future but still winning as many games as possible this season.

In - Hulett

Out - Dawes

Honestly I think it'll be a no-change, pending injuries. The players I see in our side that could be improved upon are: Dawes, one of Frost or OMac, Bugg and possibly vandenBerg or Matt Jones.

Dawes has never been dropped in his whole time at the MFC, so I assume the status quo will be maintained there.  Hulett may be progressing, but I don't see an urgency in bringing him until we're sure he's ready.

We might leave out OMac (Frost is the better of the two IMO) - for who though - Garland?  I'm not against it but I don't see it as a huge improvement.

I thought Vanders stepped up in the second half when he was put on the ball; didn't get too many damaging possessions but it at least got him tackling again.  We persist, I think.  Matt Jones besides one pretty ordinary fumble was passable.

The players I see out of the side who may be considered are Lumumba, Trengove, Brayshaw, Oliver, Garland, Michie, Hulett, Grimes and Neal-Bullen.  Besides Brayshaw and Oliver, I don't see much opportunity to improve our side given the players in question and the players available to replace them. I expect the club to be as conservative as practicable with Brayshaw given the horror year he's had, and I can't see the point of playing selection ping-pong with Oliver; let him settle one way or the other.

Changes I'd like to happen (not necessarily the ones I think will happen)...

OUT: Kennedy, OMac, Dawes
IN: ANB, Grimes, Hulett

Freshen up a little for Darwin. Kennedy was selfish and did some dumb things yesterday, play ANB as a small high forward. Grimes to the backline. Give Hulett a crack.

We have a 6 day break and we'll be playing in 28 degree heat.

Everytime we come off a 6 day break and get pumped, Roos always says they got it wrong at selection by not making changes.

I'm expecting at least 3 changes.

Does playing players who played in a VFL game on the same day as the AFL game really "freshen" the team up much? The intensity at VFL level may be lower, nonetheless Grimes, ANB et al all played a full game of football, just as the AFL players did.

Just get Dawes out of this team, brings nothing, runs around like a fool, doesn't stand in good defending positions in our zone, still can't mark a ball or find free space. At the moment i would rather Frosty there than this tool.  Anyone know how Pedo is travelling, at least he can mark it occasionally.

In the next 3 weeks we have trips to NT and WA both after 6 day breaks so need to pick 'fresh' players (which we didn't do for the Alice game under similar circumstances).

In: Wagner (if fit will be fresh), Trengove (who didn't play yesterday should be fresh), Brayshaw, Oliver (statistics aside, the only 2 that looked sharp at Casey yesterday).

Out: Vand (still looks troubled by injury), Dawes (must go), and 2 of Harmes/Kennedy/Kent.  Unfortunately, it may be M Jones who makes way.

Proviso:  Casey have another bye next week which may affect selections as to who needs continuity eg we may see Lumumba in to get match fitness (yes I know it should happen at Casey but circumstances may not always allow that.  Not saying H will get selected, just saying the Casey bye may affect selections).

Well they would have had a whole hour extra rest... ;)

I think the lower intensity but also the fact that those guys have not made any trips interstate which in the second half of the year could start to make an impact I think, particularly with the lower interchange cap this year.

Trengove in Dawes out...

Trengove has the smarts to play forward, we go with a smaller more mobile forward line until Hullet or Weideman are ready.

Does Wagner come straight in?

I watched Hulett yesterday and i think the club will want him to get some consistency into his game first before debut. Physically ready though.

The VFL bye is another week for Brayshaw to rest from any head knocks Besides even though he is way too classy i think the club will give him a couple more weeks in the VFL to get more run in his legs. Has struggled with the step up to AFL intensity this year.

In terms of bringing in fresh players i would consider Grimes Trengove and Alex Neal Bullen. All 3 have incredibly big endurance and have shown form at VFL level.

Also i know this is a long shot but i would seriously consider bringing in Dunn to replace Dawes. More mobile and can at least kick a goal up forward when needed. Plus i just believe we lack that experience voice out on the field that Dunn has. He seriously can't be any worse then Dawes up forward...

Some of these suggested changes are nuts.

Trengove is not a like for like for Dawes and no way that change gets made.

Harmes/Kennedy/Kent all played really good games yesterday.

Harmes was down back for a good part of the day and actually looked really good.

Kent attacked the ball and provided run. He also played the role of storming off the back of the square and collecting a hand off on the way through and, when it worked, it looked really dangerous.

Kennedy cracked in all day and was good. A couple of missed shots are no reason to drop him.

I'd be surprised if there were many changes, really. Nobody stands out in the VFL, other than Grimes, and it will only be a question of whether they want to get in any of Brayshaw, Oliver or Lumumba. I doubt they will.

He needs to get to 100 games. The family barraks for Melbounrne. Both boys in the family play AFL football. It is not unreasonable to think he might have a son in the future who can play footy. We can't make the finals. We owe him and it is in our best intersts.

I reckon Dawes for Spencer.  Gawn is really starting to look done and I don't blame him he has rucked over 90% in every game we have played.  Just play on really deep, they couldn't be any worse than brick hands

Suggesting they might go out was not because they had 'bad' games.  It was in the context of the first sentence in the post: having 'fresh' players for the upcoming short breaks and long i/state trips and to rotate in Brayshaw and/or Oliver during that 3 weeks especially as Casey have a bye next week.

Dunn or Spencer for Dawes has merit particularly with a bye in the VFL. I think Spencer may surprise some both up forward and with his ruck work and Gawn also knows where the goals are.

Dunn or Jake for Dawes.

Trengove ,Brayshaw for Bugg,M Jones or Harmes.

IN:
Grimes (Oliver has a case and I wouldn't be surprised but Grimes deserves it, enough said)
Spencer (Spencer can provide a contest, free Watts of the ruck, move Hogan to CHF and give infinitely more effort than dawes)

OUT:
Vanders (Something just not quite right, put him on ice for the week then bring back through casey make him find form)
Dawes (Saw more effort from the seagulls)

Wagner was only out due to injury so would expect him to return with no Casey game for him to play in. Not sure who he would replace though, Oscar struggled but we did play against the best forwardline in the AFL, a struggle was to be expected. Roos said they flinched when it came to making changes for Alice I would be very disapointed if they did it again. The 2 changes above I think are right but anything up to 4 changes shouldn't be out of the question.

Fair enough.

I don't think they'll bring in Oliver or Brayshaw on the basis of being 'fresh'.

They might bring them in because they make the team better, but the current coaching team seems to think that, say a Harmes or Kennedy type on a six day break is better than an ANB, Michie or Newton type coming off a VFL game.

Just seems to be what they are thinking.

Admitting selection mistakes in the media is far more palatable than admitting the players you've got waiting to come in aren't good enough, it seems to me.

After a short moment of pondering, I was going to nominate AVB as an out however I believe what is currently letting us down is our tackling. Vanders had 8 which I believe was equal our second best.

Oliver in.

Stretch out.

Should be: In: Grimes, Brayshaw, Spencer, Trengove Out: Vandenberg, Dawes, Kent, Petracca

Will be: No change, unless Roos finds a way to sneak his best mate Lumumba into the team.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
