Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Lots of limitations but I can't believe he hasn't been selected over Kent.  Harmes also needs a 4 quarter performance.

Kent's had a few bad games of late/this year but he's also been very good in a number of others, giving us really good link play sprinting to open space and getting the ball forward.

Grimes isn't ever going to be able to do that. What he did do in the preseason and the role he's mainly played for Casey is the wing role, which is where he's best suited these days.

Doesn't have the skills or reaction time to play down back, isn't a forward, doesn't have the strength to play as an inside midfield.

Bugg was doing well on the wing but Vince moving to the midfield saw him go down back. Which left Trenners, Stretch and rotating Harmes playing wing against the Hawks.

I'd suggest Grimes might be a chance to come in to play wing, with Trenners going to half forward and rotating on the wing and either Harmes or Kent coming out but it might not happen either.

Right now Bugg, Matt Jones before injury and Stretch have all outplayed Grimes on the wing. Time will tell if he can get a go in that spot.

I really hope Grimesy gets a gig at another club next season, i firmly believe the club has already decided to move him on and it's up to him to change our mind, but he's been consistently performing at VFL level and can't get a game so that paints a bad picture for him.

It's such a shame because he's a fantastic bloke and bleeds red and blue as much as anyone at the club,

Hopefully Grimes will get a look in during the second half of the season, at least to see if he has any chance of a new contract, we owe him that much.

I would expect his agent is talking to a lot of other clubs for 2017 Dante.

His papers are obviously stamped.

It's all been said before.

So we want to give him 100 games on the notion he may have a son that plays AFL?

Or because we're not going to play finals we want to get as many games into our young players as possible and build continuity amongst the group.

No- because he deserves to play, been the most consistent player over the last 5 weeks, should be a good enough reason IMO.

According to Justin Plapp's VFL review, Jack was pulled out of last week's game - because  of  "complexity" at AFL level. Sounds like he's very close - but if we keep on winning and our mids/running defenders stay fit - he might keep on " just missing"

It is a comment on the development of our club  that a former captain handed the famous #31 guernsey as one of the first picked can't get a game ahead of late draftees/ rookies.

It's a comment, but not really a simple one or always a good one.

Terrible idea to make him captain. Terrible idea to give him 31. Shocking playing culture. Shocking development and coaching. A routinely picked younger player gets saddled with responsibility and injuries. Yes it's good we've been able to draft/trade and develop some other options but that's about all the good in the Grimes story for now. A bit sad really, his best was very promising - courageous, quick, strong over head, excellent reader of the play and work rate to provide an option and he's a ripper club man.

People perhaps forget how good he looked before he did his foot. I remember thinking we had an absolute super star on our hands in those early years.

Injuries can't be helped (must be something in the water in the Grimes house) but says more about our club than him that he's ended up where he is.

You simply can't fault his endeavour - he's just been monstered by circumstance. And its all been said before, and it really sucks.

The way things are looking, he is as good as gone at seasons' end.

His form at Casey has been very good yet he can't get a game.

I really hope he gets his 100 games with us, as he deserves it and of course you never know in the future, if it will become important.

Agree with that, especially the bolded bit.

Along these lines, Brisbane supporters should build a statue to the chairman of selectors at Fitzroy who pushed for Brian Brown to get his 50th and penultimate game for the Royboys at the Lake Oval in June 1981, a 10 disposal affair that delivered the opportunity for young Jonathon to join the old man's firm and help the Lions three-peat.

Call me a sentimental old fool if you must.  But, I really feel for Jack.  I so wish he can find his old mojo and win his place back in the team and go on and be the star we thought he would become.  And, for him to then share in our future glory would be SO fitting.

He still has time..!

He has already found his mojo, but apparently the selectors think little of it. It is clearly an agenda with selection as they prepare for the future.

Maybe in the second half of the season, as the younger players tire, they might need a mature body or two to take their place as they rest. Good strategy so we don't cook the kids.

This.

Roos is not known for his adaptability and this particular agenda is obviously supported in other parts of the FD.

Christ it must be so hard, from captain (not discussing the merits of he and Trenners being made captain) to playing good footy in the VFL but can't break into the main team. Hope he gets to 100, and if he is good enough more for the Dees.

This week would've been perfect for him to run out with Trenners, but no room for sentimentality I guess.

I think that's the great thing about the new culture. Lot more cut throat, less sentimentality and players know what 'performing' is.

I agree. In fact i think he is real chance of being picked this weekend, replacing Stretch. Good time to give Billy a rest with the bye coming up and Grimes is playing a similar role at Casey (wing/mid). It will be atough, wet game so an a mid twenties hardened AFL player will come in very handy.

I also thought these comments from Plapp in this VFL player review were interesting and perhaps a indicator Grimes is a chance:

'He was taken off the ground at three quarter time due to some stuff at AFL level that we just needed him to be ready for but we were really happy with Grimesy.'

Sure, except when players perform, and don't get a crack.

You wait until Garlett gets named this week or next, on the back of zero strong performances in the twos.

And Wagner coming from nowhere, with little VFL form to speak of.

This 'rewarding performance' stuff is used when it suits, and conveniently overlooked when it doesn't.

With Melksham to come, Hibberd being chased, Salem Garland and HL injured and youngsters doing well and Grimes not getting a game despite good form, it is pretty likely he will want to move on at the end of th season.

Can see him in yellow and black with his brother.

Always has and always will be 'Undeterred'....things are never quite that simple but coaches still trot it out.

I am guessing, but Grimes may have been the second emergency and the club might have been worried about Viney and then another player pulling out at the last minute.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
