Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

The Nathan Jones comparison is one of the most stupid and pointless thing you could do. Jones could do all those things you pointed out he couldn't except maybe kicking.

And please... Weitering is already a lock 200 game future star. The Jesse Hogan of the backline.

Take off the rose coloured glasses ffs.

It is called an opinion. My glasses are new and very clear. Maybe you need to stop looking at everything through the eyes of Eeyore.

And as for Nathan Jones,, we all love him, but his first two seasons did nothing to show what he would become.

So you're asking if we think you should bet? If you can afford to lose $50 go for it.

Frirstly, whilst I hardly consider myself a blue blood who can throw money around like confetti, the obvious point is don't bet what you can't afford to loose.

But if I can elaborate further, I'm not sure that I'd be backing us as hard against the Swans or GWS right at the moment, but right now Hawthorn are 'gettable' and we could be competitive against them.  If you  also consider that the team we put on the park this week is probably better than last week, then I think we are in with a much better chancr than the current conventional thinking suggests.

I remember watching Jonesy in his first couple of years at the club and cringing every time he got the footy like I do a few of our current potential up and commers.  Hope they can all turn into Chunks!!

Jones finished runner up in the Best and Fairest in his 2nd year.

Again this proves your complete lack of knowledge of Jones as a footballer and in general.

People seem to really forget how bad our list was when Roos walked in at the end of 13'. Non AFL standard players were finishing top 4 in our BnF. The Blues had some talent last year atleast but were poorly coached. The Dogs always had great talent but needed a better gameplan to take the next step. We are where we should be.

To me it just seems to go against the usual pattern of development we've brought in with young players generally learning at VFL level rather than AFL level. No one thinks there isn't potential there, but we're not gifting games based on potential anymore, so just seems a little strange that players like Michie, ANB, Dunn, Newton etc get very little chance if they underperform while OMac, Harmes, Hunt and Wagner who are all young players that weren't high picks are allowed a few off ones.

Roos' whole philosophy is around competition for spots and earning games isn't it? Just feels like that has been watered down somewhat this year and we're starting to go back to giving games based on "potential" rather than performance.

Omac hasn't been too bad for mine.

I get your point DD, but he was hardly the finished product in his second year.  As a young fella his disposal was average at best and he wasn't a huge ball winner.  He has improved plenty since then, though.

He came second in '08, a year that none of us would look back on fondly.  He didn't have strong competition that year.

Agreed. I have us winning only four more games for the year, and even that's generous.

Young players need game time and any given player often needs 60-70 games under his belt before there is a sense of belonging and a feeling of being firmly established.  We have a numerous amount of players who need to get to that mark so we'll all need to be patient.

My reading of the selected teams is that the Match Committee are searching more for a cohesive unit with the players who are chosen in the side being those who can work within that cohesive unit.  These same players are perhaps being asked to play in a foreign way to how they have traditionally played and if they can't adapt, they don't play.

It's possibly a form of 'Total football' which has been adapted to footy.  Simply minding your man is only a part of how a footballer goes about it with this game plan.

Anyway, my expectations for tomorrow is that we give a excellent account of ourselves with every player doing his absolute best ... if the effort, energy, application and a will-to-win is there, we may run them close.

Edit: Incorrectly thought that Nathan Jones did not finish 2nd in his 2nd season - got that wrong but the rest of my post stands.  His 3rd &  4th years weren't great but he hit his straps later on (as we have witnessed)  And that was the point of my post highlighted in the above 2nd paragraph,

The fact they chose Frost over Dunn tells me it's still a development year and finals aren't on the agenda (despite what PJ told us at the end of 2014)

Is there any merit in us tagging Smith and/or Brad Hill so Mitchell can't distribute to their damaging outside wingers?

Smith and Hill own the MCG wings and that's where I see them killing us today.

I understand the development angle, but when a player is so obviously out of his depth and weak in contests it raises questions as to whether selecting him is a hindrance more than a help.

If you were selecting the team for a grand final being held tomorrow, who would you select, Dunn or O. McDonald ?  For me the answer is clear.

If it was a close decision I'd happily select the young developing player, but I don't see it that way.  Oscar looks a mile off.  For that reason I don't understand why Dunn or even Pedersen wasn't chosen.

What grand final is happening tomorrow out of curiosity?

It was a bunch of disjointed thoughts with no bearing whatsoever on what you initially said, didn't address my point in any way at all, and you opened and closed with abuse.  I gave it the level of response I thought it deserved.

Moving on.

Slight change of toppic from all the Oscar bashing/selection bemoaning...

I'm not much of a punter and don't really want to be seen to encouraging gambling, but IMHO the $5 being offered for a Melbourne win this week is pretty darn good based on respective form to date and I'm very tempted to put $50 on us.

I know recient past record against would suggest I'm a fool, but Hawthorn weren't all that good against the lions and neither have we been the past two, so I think it will come down to who wants it more.  I'm happy that we've selected a team of goers and we are about due for another breakthrough game like Geelong last year.

Any thoughts?

Yep, keep your $50. Though I will be delighted to be proven wrong.

Oh FFS is it hard for people to take the time out and do a bit of research..

Nathan Jones came runner up in the Best and Fairest to James McDonald in 2007. Officially his 2nd year.

This crap about Jones been so underwhelming as a junior and comparing him to Oscar is pathetic and laughable.

Wise no player in their 2nd year are finished products anyway. But fact is Jones finishing 2nd in the Best and Fairest in 2007 as a 2nd year player gave us glimpse that he would be at least a solid 150 game player.

His improvement is just a credit to himself as i find him one of our more reliable kicks now and trust the ball in his hand to make good decisions.

Almost. There's no apostrophe in the possessive form of its. Neither before nor after the 's'. It's means it is (abbreviated form). Its' does not exist in English.

Technically a sentence needs a predicate and is more than one word.  "Almost." is not a sentence.

I'll overlook it on this occasion.

This is an excellent post and summation.  It explains McDonald's selection and is the only logical conclusion.

Clearly roos is planning on building a team for a grand final. Reckon that might be why Dunn isn't there? Or is that out of your depth?

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
