That's what I thought. Not knocking it but I would've thought this early in his career contracts would be the last thing on a players mind.  Was anyone even worried that he might leave?

You don't think he will be around the 22 in 2019?

AFL asks clubs to invest in players, teenagers, with a maximum 2 year deal. We have essentially turned Oliver's into a 4 year deal.

It is so smart. Why bother waiting and pay more in a year's time?

Seraph - I suspect that barring injury, Brayshaw's second season would be as impressive as his first, but of course we will never know.

Can't be too careful these days. Players are brazen enough to walk after their first contract is up. Scully left in a flash. Aish requested a trade after 2 years, Boyd after 1. It's good to lock them away early.

Don't disagree rpfc, good strategy maybe but just a bit odd. The last time we were desperate to extend first year players was in 2010 and as I remember things Trengove signed on but not Scully, so I believe MFC is well aware that Hoges is going to be a problematic signing.

The inference is that we did this to juxtapose what Hogan isn't doing...

We can't extend a promising young player's contract? Can it be about him and not another promising kid?

You're honestly not sure why we've moved to re-contract Oliver this early?

Thrilled with these recent signings. Hunt, Spencer, Viney and now Clarry! Now to lock away TMac, Watts, Tyson and give Jesse the club's bank account details.

Still absolutely stoked that we chose Oliver over Parish. While I believe that Parish will be a fantastic player, Oliver has a much higher ceiling and could be absolutely anything.

Clarry is still only 18 years old and already built like a brick outhouse with jet engines attached to the sides. Seriously scary to think where he'll be in terms of physicality and skill in five years time.

It's because we are in a great position to front load contracts.

We advertise they it's a contract extension. But that's not really accurate. It's more likely that we have renegotiated his original contract from 2 years to 4. Instead of paying him the standard new player salary for 2 years, we can pay him a heap more now and next year and then greatly lower the amount in the final year/s of the contract.

Oliver wins because we give him a massive pay rise right now based on potential, and ends up getting paid slightly more than he would have by waiting. And we end up winning because we have front loaded the hell out of the contract a d have more to splash around later on.

The big risk for the club is if Oliver doesn't kick on like expected, or if he gets a serious injury.

There is a reason why his manager has recommended he takes it. It's a great deal for his client.

The only reason why we can do this is because we have been rubbish for a decade and struggled to meet minimum salary cap spending. We have been employing this tactic for a long time now and won't be able to do it if all the young players on our list kick on like expected over the next few years. A good problem to have.

Fairly certain you can't do this.  New draftees earn set wages, which you can't increase.

C.f. Tom Boyd in first year at the Dogs was still on rookie wages, with the promise of $millions later.

Same wording is there under Second Year Players.

Bottom Line - definitely can't pay more than the mandated amounts to 1st/2nd year players.

Wouldn't mind seeing him play forward for parts of some games. Particularly towards the end of the year as he gets tired.  He is a beautiful set shot and is a strong mark.
