Don't know if Goody would do that, but Roo's seems all to forgiving.

I think there would some merit in games like today when we're clearly not switched on that seen as we have a coach in waiting in the box for Roos to go to the bench and address some players when they come the bench. I would have pulled Garland and McDonald off and said OK which one of you is playing on Danniher? Once you work that out, hpw about you actually use your body so he doesn't get a free run at every high ball bombed in to him?

Hogan isn't going to make it as a gun forward if he doesn't start to lead at the ball carrier, defenders just swarm  him because they know we are just going to bomb it long to the square, if he starts leading up, he takes his defender and free's up space for other forwards to lead back to the square. If there's movement in the forward line our midfielders might start lowering they're eyes. that's actually all over the ground, our players need to move and lead, stop this kicking to out numbered contests.

Yes this gave me great confidence when Roos said that as well as when he said he couldn't tell during the week which guys were tired... I mean did he watch them at training or anything? Talk to them?

No apparently he doesn't talk to a lot of players during the week... Has his select few he communicates with and the rest are left to their line coaches. Players love Goodwin and waiting for him to take over

Whose to say they did not, but then who are you going to replace Tommy Mac if you dragged him off, also he would be spending more time off the ground than on with that approach.  Players need to take responsibility for their actions, right or wrong. blaming the coaches just gives the players an out so they don't need to consider what they did.

Said it in the game day thread. Will say it here.
We are the most immature team in the AFL. We stagger over the line last week and that is enough for some.
It felt like Groundhog Day going in (our loss to Essendon last year). Contented playing group, backs to the wall opposition and us going in hot favorites. You could just tell this was going to happen.
Tom McDonald needs to be dropped. I don't bag individuals too much but some of his decision making is ridiculous. It's been 4 years that we've been saying that he needs to play within his limitations and this happens!
It's not season over by a long way but if that group is aiming for finals then they are a considerable distance from their goal.

Definitely ground hog day, at the moment Hogan is a poor man's Joe Daniher

If you're going to use a word abusing the club perhaps you could spell it correctly. It's ineptitude. Perhaps you don't have an aptitude for making comments?

We cannot just keep blaming coaches, are we going to call for Goodwin to be sacked when the team folds again like this against Essendon next year when he is officially in charge.

Some of their players have been together for 8 [censored] weeks.

Some of their players have been around a lot longer: Daniher, Cooney, Goddard, Zaharakis, etc. they also didn't lose all of their good players to the drug bans. They've got some fast, big bodied, tall, elite footballers on their team.

Why won't they bleed for the jumper that's the million dollar question if he's getting $1.5 mill a season and he can't figure that out   something wrong I went to a few session at Casey this year and never even spotted Roos.

Its just Melbourne that make a big song and dance over every little feat. Oh hey look we won the first game of the year, wow! Oh hey lets get two wins a row, wow! Jesus, I cant imagine what its going to be like when they aim for 3 wins a row, they'll probably get on a bender thinking they just wont back to back to back flags!

You are absolutley spot on with this observation. All the hype from players and staff on the mfc website after stealing the game form gws you would have thought we won a prelim. We have such low expectations they become self fullfilling prophecies. Heres a thought dont pat each others arses until you win four games in a row. That should be our standard from now on.

All this hype from players and coaches that we have improved after one game is insulting to us who pay these guys week in week out. The only way we can say we have improved is at the end of the year when we have more than seven meagre wins. In the meantime for the love of goodness knows please, I beg you to respectfully stfu.

The game day experience overall reminds me of the Carlton & Essendon games last year. For whatever reason whether it was being out coached or our players being not mentally prepared its not good enough.

Whilst it is hard to gauge from pre season games it certainly appeared like our game style had changed to moving the ball quickly from half back or through the middle of the ground under Goodwin. I believe we scored or averaged 100 points for in each game? We have barely seen any quick ball movement & efficient switching of play since the NAB challenge/cup. Is it Paul Roos coaching style or is the opposition negating our style of play? One thing is clear is that nothing has changed since last year under Roos. David King must be lapping it up at the moment after making the point about Roos & Goodwin's coaching style during pre-season.

I am really questioning whether Roos is the way forward from here after watching the last two weeks of footy & comparing it to how we were playing in the NAB challenge. This post isn't a post to just pot shot Paul Roos, however I'd like to encourage some debate from what we know about the two coaching styles of Roos & Goodwin. Perhaps it deserves it's own thread.

Overall it was a very disappointing day to be a Melbourne supporter, maybe the less said the better.

Posters bagging Lumumba and M.Jones but not saying anything about Viney, Brayshaw, Kent, Hogan, Garland, McDonald and vandenBerg who were all poor today... It's like you just copy and paste the same names without actually watching the game.

I would drop Hogan after his effort and attitude today. Can't baby him anymore, if he's going to sook and never give a second effort then he can learn better habits at Casey for a few weeks.

Agree 100%

Kent was invisible, as was Vandenberg. Brayshaw looked like a first gamer, and Hogan was an embarrassment. Sooked all day, and gave repeated, half assed efforts with no hands in the air, just like the Watts of old that we all whined about.

I was led to believe that this was the "new Melbourne". A team of "competitors". who would give 100% effort, 100% of the game. My first bet on an AFL game in my entire life, because I fell for the hot air, thinking we had finally turned the corner, and become a real football TEAM.

We are still the old Melbourne. The butt of everyones jokes, the laughing stock of the game we invented. We are toxic, and even the wonder boys cant find a cure.

essedon, the drug cheats, with their imbecile, jacket waving sycophants, are getting drunk and laughing at us yet again. Its always us, the pitiful dees, who throw ourselves under a bus, to make whatever team is in crisis look respectable.

.......respect, something that our list doesn't seem to care about.

Thanks guys, you look like ruining yet another season.

Sure sign of our 'culture' is the way we pander to Jesse Hogan. All this love and understanding about putting off his negotiations so he can concentrate on his run-up. Very afraid to say that he is looking like a one-trick, goal square pony. Or maybe just knows this is not the main game, his next contract is. If other less renowned full forwards had put in his non-contests they would have copped their usual spray; Pederson, Watts to name a couple. We should have lost today by 30-40 points. the  ball was just catapaulting off our forward line all afternoon.

Remember David Parkins veins in the neck when he was clearly going right off in the box.

Shots of Roos in the box show him relaxed,a little dismayed, but that's it.

A good pay out never hurt anyone, nor would a 5am session at Stkilda beach

Want to earn the big bucks? earn it,welcome to the big time Hogan, now get in the water.

easy to blame Garland and McDonald all the time, BUT NO ONE running into spaces to provide options. this lack of t.e.a.m meant that the backs had to kick to 50/50's or try to pick off ridiculously difficult targets.

Roos has not changed the style from what Goodwin set, its just that our players cannot execute it. We get found out on the spread, simple as that, teams chip it around us and over us.  At one stage in todays game there were 3 essendon players when the ball was kicked to Hogan alone in our forward line. Why was that, where were our other 2 players? Those three players ran and linked up with heaps of Essendon players running alone all the way up the ground, again where were the Melbourne players ?

This reminds so much of the way we used to play against the bulldogs years ago, the dogs would do anything to force a point in our defensive half, then from the kickout they would take it up along the boundary line without a demon player getting near the ball and score. They did this time and time again. Now opposition players are holding it using their spare men in defense to kick to the other side and our players just cannot run or keep up with the opposition who cut us to ribbons. Our zoning is pathetic, we don't know how to man up and force a contest, Essendon had far too many uncontested possessions compared to us. I don't understand the zone mentality when you are allowing your player to have 5-10 sometimes 20 meters lead on you. I don't understand what good having an extra man in our defence is if the opposition can use their spare numbers all around the ground to go around our spare. on in the case of today just bunch all our spares around Joe Danihers feet.

3 years in the making & at full strength we lose to a VFL team that was enjoying retirement with pizza & beers 3 months ago.

Move over Roos.

I think he has 2 to 3 weeks to redeem himself (and the players also). They would need to win all of the next 3 to regain any sort of credibility after that pitiful effort and lack of composure/character.

I don't particularly want to open up this can of worms, but I will. I wonder whether things would be different had Roos come for the long haul. Had he been entirely invested in bringing back the Demon like he did the bloods. There's no doubt he's done wonders for the culture at the club, but this soft-bellied performance today certainly sets back quite a bit of the hard work done over the last 12 months. Can Goodwin bring a new spirit to this club?

Shuffling the deck chairs. We need super fast, super talented players who can run, spread and hit targets consistently. Too slow at decision making, too many poor decision makers, poor awareness and all round just bog ordinary disposers of the football who are possibly beyond repair and/or not truly committed or capable of playing at AFL level for more than a quarter or 2. List is only 1/3rd of the way there IMO before we see this mob start performing and winning matches that they are expected to (on paper).

Why didnt roos give hogan a run on the ball in the the third like last week. Seemed slow like are players in being reluctant to make any changes today.

Why didn't Roos give jeffy a run in the middle in the last quarter!!? (when the game was still up for grabs!?)

Essendrug's high press seemed to work. Ours was non-existent/ ineffective (at best). We never locked the ball down our end at any stage of the match. They ran it out like we weren't on the park. What happened to "team defense" lol?

3 pre-season's to get this right but still way behind the rest of the comp.

You mean like calling players [censored] or idiots or other posters morons    I said if we competed we would win we didn't and lost quite simple   I knew we were done half way through first quarter   and least we limited the damage

bombing the ball in will never create goals  all the rubbish about  Hogan I would have got frustrated with the  delivery   BenKen N Jones and Jetta about the only three who competed for 4 qtrs

You don't "limit the damage" against a VFL side. You attack.

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
