Congratulations to Clayton Oliver, who has been named the NAB AFL Rising Star nominee for round one!

Awesome debut game. Thought the guy from Sydney would have got it but good start to your career Clayton.

Well done Claret... go you good thing.

In the back half Murphy, Boyd, Morris and Picken all 30 or older and provide most of their drive.  Stringer makes their forward line look a lot better than what it is and their rucks are still a worry.

Geelong or West Coast I reckon.

I still give them a chance.

The role he played for us was far more significant than any of the other potential nominee's in my opinion, 15 contested touches in a hard fought close game with a quality midfield is a good effort but two clearances that resulted in two goals in the last from a first gamer is insane.

imo he doesn't play anywhere but the AFL team in 2016 unless he is rested, kid is as promising as anyone at the club, including Hogan

 22 possessions, (15 contested)  -  7 clearances  -  58% game time.

Multiple vital clearances to start the 4th when we made our run  Not only will he win the Rising Star he will snag a few Brownlow votes along the way.

Well deserved. Honestly I wasn't too worried if he didn't get it this week, it was only a matter of time. Some crucial clearances in the final quarter and a simply outstanding first half.

Congrats Clarry!

Dogs??

Dogs is certainly the most likely where you will fall down.

No doubt they were good on the weekend and their skill execution at times is unbelievable, but Freo were deplorable. The game potentially provided a false reading on where the Dogs are at. They may sneak into the top 4 but 5-8 seems a lot more likely. They will have off days and lack the experienced key defensive stocks to win a premiership.

Clarry well deserved. Very likeable kid too which doesn't hurt.

If Carlton had won it would've gone to Weitering, but they didn't, so it didn't.

Or Parish if Essendon had of won. For the sake of Clarry, we just have to keep winning.

I think it's not just that we won, but that he was instrumental in the win.  Once they put him back in the guts in the last quarter, our midfield got well on top again, and he won the clearances that resulted in the first two goals of the last quarter.  His absence during the third quarter was the only period where their midfield started to get on top in the contests.

The kid is a freak.  This may seem like hyperbole, but after one game and at 18, he is already the best inside midfielder that I've seen at the club.  Even if he doesn't get any better, it doesn't matter.  His focus over the next two years will be tank development; if he can get up to 75-80% TOG then he is going to be unstoppable.

i also think alot of this was to do with Gawn spending most of his minutes on the bench during the 3rd quarter, Pederson was comprehensively beaten in the ruck by mumford and this meant for control in the stoppages to GWS.
Not underselling Clarries performance, it was probably the best first half debut i have seen of any player at the MFC and his ability to hit the ball drop at speed and be clean is outstanding.

Did anyone see Parish play?

Stats read well but some commentators today hinted at 1 - the opposition and 2 - the stage of the game when he got them.

Obviously early days.

I watched a lot of this game. I thought Parish was excellent. Tough to debut when your team is getting smashed. He is still quite skinny and will take a while to develop, but he was probably in their best.

I am so happy that we have moved away from all this "ceiling" talk with early round draft picks, incidentally he is the type of player who can perform well now and still get better.

Well deserved:  22 possessions, 15 contested, 7 clearances, 2 of which in the 4th qtr set up the play for our 4th qtr comeback and did all that with just 58% game time.  Far better than other candidates when % game time is considered.

Simply awesome!

Edit:  Here is the AFL story http://www.afl.com.au/risingstar Interesting that Clarrie credits Macca with the performance:  "'Macca' [Demons development coach Brendan McCartney] told me to see ball, get ball – just go hard at the ball and win it, and that's it," Oliver told Fox Footy.

I loved this message from McCartney - probably a bit going through Clayton's head given it's his first game. Keep the message simple, allow's the boy to focus and excel.

Imagine how good this gun is going to be when he builds up his tank! (I'm closing my eyes and multiplying those contested possessions by two!!)

He is one of those unique footballers that makes it seem that the ball sees him and comes in his direction - it just means that he reads the play as it unfolds and gets to where the ball is going to be.

Fantastic reward for effort.  Easily the best debut game I've seen from a Demon since the introduction of the draft.  His repeat efforts, commitment to the contest and composure against seasoned footballers are unbelievable for a kid.  Imagine what he will be like when he matures and develops a tank!  Strikes me as definitely not the type of player who will easily be shut out of the game.

I didn't see much of the game but sometimes there are a lot of easy possessions to be had when your team is being smashed. The opposition don't put any focus on you so you can go about your biz...think Gysberts and his rising star games.

Congrats to the Clarry. With Hogan the winner last year, Brayshaw in the top 5 and now Oliver getting an early gong this year you would think Petracca will be chomping on the bit to get amongst it. We are living in interesting times to be a Melbourne supporter.

Statistical quirk from the weekend. Of the top five 2015 draft picks - Weitering, Schache, Mills, Oliver and Parish - all played and played well. Of the 2014 top 5 from 2014 - McCartin, Petracca, Brayshaw, Pickett and DeGoey - none played at the top level for various reasons

De Goey played for Collingwood. Just sayin...

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
