MATCH PREVIEW & TEAM SELECTION - ROUND 1, 2016

That pressure from players to come in (Brayshaw, Petracca, H, Trenners,... Etc) on tomorrow's squad will ensure players like Harmes OMac, MJones, Oliver, Kennedy, Bug perform WELL or be likely exclusions over the coming month.

will sort the wheat from the chaff, so to speak...

Shiel is who I'd lock down on with Viney. Particularly at the stoppages but also to watch his runs through the middle. Both left footers with similar build, good burst speed etc.

Ward and Griffen might play well, I think we have to live with it and hope Jones and Tyson can hurt them the other way. Josh Kelly and Jack Steele are fantastic young players to rotate in to the midfield. Hopefully Vanders is at his tackling and marauding best when he goes in to the middle and Oliver has a stern first test.

Gawn v Mumford really is a sensational match up. Hopefully Max can out point him in the ruck, run off him around the ground and protect our mids from him when he follows up the footy at ground level. Pedersen will be a key in that regard. Needs to get his big body between Mumford and our little guys.

yes, I thought of that,  but we also need to create as well,  so Jones strength endurance focus & experience,  I think helps on Shiel.  Olivers tenacity re tackling, also.

I just like Vineys attributes in-under in the middle to quell Ward.  also the 'challenge' of a potential future leader,  to cut the Giants captain down. pardon pun

Tyson could play from the wing on one of the younger kids. or rotate thru in the right matchup.

Looking for likely types to stop Johnston, those who can play off back flank,  Bugg has experience there, & Harmes has the dash to match him & handy run from back half on turnovers.

I don't think we have that many options for SJohnston.

Not sure about Omac at CHB, would prefer to see Frost in that position.

I'm not sure about both of them to be honest

I now trust the footy club so we will see how they go.   I really hope they play well and justify the faith that has been put in them

Yep, just saw FOX reporting that AVB may be a late withdrawal and Grimes or Dunn would play. Not ideal. AVB is an underrated player who helps our enginetick. Grimes is a fkn liability. I would almost rather Dunn. Prefer they played Brayshaw

I'm amazed that if AVB was doubtful, why Stretch would play in the Casey intraclub match. He offers more than Grimes as a midfielder. Dunn would make us too top heavy.

C&B I don't think I've seen you be this positive since I joined the site. We must be on the right track then!?

I must admit I'm feeling very nervous about tomorrow.

Based on the preseason I am hoping for a good performance and will be devastated if we play like the bad old days.

Please Melbourne for the sake of everyone start performing and importantly WINNING.

GO DEES.

was going to renew full redlegs membership tonight but the the team selection shocked me ,if they dont pick dunn they have lost me ,the club treats us paying supporters like crap if players are injured or what ever we should know .JAM it where the sun dont shine

yep, agreed, but I already joined.

any starting 18 that leaves Lynden out is wrong IMO, unless he is genuinely injured or not match fit.

Lynden  is Melbourne for me. How much more does he have to bleed for this club?

Regards to all and, by the way, rumours of my death were somewhat exaggerated. I like to read these days, but do not often feel that I have anything to say that has not already been said better.

The grammar on this site has not improved. Youngsters, the correct spelling is "definitely."

I just have a feeling that if someone's gonna carve us up tomorrow it'll be Steve Johnson. We also need a hard tag on moneybags.

No Petracca (and Brayshaw) on the park to open the season dampens my spirits slightly

Warning: Matt Jones

Warning: It's Jack Watts' birthday tomorrow

I do not have the same concerns with regard to Omac as many on here as I believe that, as is the case in just about any game I have watched, it will be won and lost in the midfield. If we do not have the pressure in the center then, no matter who is in the defensive arc we are in trouble. We need the guys in the middle to be there all day and then some.

Lets have a look at who will be in the middle tomorrow.

Vince, Viney, VDB, N. Jones, Tyson, Oliver, M. Jones, Salem, Harmes, Kent, Garlett, Bugg, Kennedy. From My point of view that is 13 players we have capable of spending time in the middle. To that I might also add Watts. There is some real quality in that group and if they can do what is asked of them then it will help with any pressure on our defence. We are now defensive all over the ground rather than waiting for the ball to come to us and then reacting. We are more proactive and that comes from all of our players, not just the mids.

We also need our coaches to be smart, fast and intelligent in their game analysis and reactions to the evolving situations. We have the players, the coaches and leadership in both groups, now we need the application of all.

Dees by a few goals.

If Vandeberg is late withdrawal for Dunn we will struggle to win. Way too tall.

Let hope it doesn't happen.

Bizarre that Dunn is not plat Ng due to lack of match fitness but is named as emergency so cannot play match sim today

Their defence looks average. Davis on hogan. Then not much else. So pedo and watts need to hit the scoreboard.

Less than 14 hours to go. Probably should go to bed

Corr who is a young athletic player, he'll probably go on to Frost who is the same.

Marchbank who looks very very handy as a young CHB on to Pedo.

Buntine, who is a smart footballer matches up well on to Watts.

Average might be fair, but we aren't exactly world beaters. So just thinking out loud I agree with your comment!

I think that we can pull it off today but I hope that Vanders isn't out!

I also despair about grammar abuse. FFS, it's "should HAVE" not "should OF"!!

A'po's'troph'e ab'u's'e is also rampant. Surely posters should realise that pronouns are apostrophe free zones!!

And the number of times I have seen references to "Dee's". Dee's what?

I've taken a sleeping tablet to calm myself down.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
