Great comments Dee-lauded. An unforgettable talent and I feel privileged to have seen him play. However a member of the footy department told me at the time in cold hard terms that he would ultimately not succeed because he had no defensive game and no amount of coaching or training was ever going to change that fact. He told me that no top club would be interested in him for that reason. That he was a luxury that no side, in particular, Melbourne could afford. However, I went to games with a sense of anticipation and excitement at what magic he might perform. And he created some great memories that few footballers can do. He was a light that shone briefly but brightly for a speck of time. His story post footy is a tragedy.

Ernest thanks for that insight. The official was right but I keep thinking if Jurrah's community had remained stable and fully supported him and if he had not got the series of injuries that curtailed his number of games in his final two years, if those problems didn't eventuate I am wondering when the coaches would have dropped him for his lack of defensive footy? If we had a side that could pump the ball inside our 50 arc often enough, you know a fit Jurrah would be kicking at least 3 or 4 a match, if not more. Hmmm yes as a coach I note his opponent running off him and setting up a couple of goals but I still think we would be ahead with a freak like Jurrah up forward and I did see him tackle people very efficiently at times. Anyway the reality was his community disintegrated and he was always going to struggle physically with injuries at AFL level, I believe.

Unlike some others my memory is that he lost the unified support of his community to stay in AFL, he was also struggling with long term injuries and yes he did lose personal support from welfare officers at the club when Neeld took over and he took some time off to attend a marriage ceremony. I think once the  Yuendemou Community fractured, Jurrah as an initiated warrior was conflicted and the rest is an unfortunate history!

Insightful comments Earl. It has made me think beyond the obvious and think about the impossibility of his two environments and the fracture within and between. There is always more than one meaning or reason. We are limited by our limited insights at times.

Don't forget people. If your at Christmas dinner and you've got chicken, it's permissible to use your hands. If you have crabs, it's also allowable, if slightly more difficult.

Are you serious. Regardless of what people think of Neeld as a coach, to insinuate that he was partially to blame for Jurrah going off the rails is ridiculous. Jurrah was responsible for his own actions, not Neeld and not the AFL.

Flackie was doing a great job looking after the likes of LJ and Wonna; however I'm not sure he did such a great job of selling the importance of his role to Mark Neeld; and paid the price accordingly. Whilst I agree with you that LJ is still ultimately responsible for his own actions, the withdrawal of Flackie's pastoral care certainly didn't help the situation.

Let it go, Jurrah was a disaster. We could have had Rockliff......

we've tended to go for the 'flashy' over hard & tough workers at the dees, or have done in the past.

lets hope better footy judges will prevail for our futures sakes, & our supporters well-beings.

Did someone mention horses, now you are talking.

With boxing, the most rigged, and over exposed "sport" on earth.

Hey Red, just quickly, has your mate/acquaintance who was involved in the AFL hearing against essedon, offered an opinion of the latest hearings?  (sorry, wrong thread I know, just interested)

Thanks Red.

As for Jurrah, for all of his incredible skills, he was easily one of the softest players I have ever seen in a Dees jumper. Remember watching him live in 3 games, and getting quite angry watching him find new ways to avoid physical contact. It was embarrassing.

If we had 21 other stars, with manic defensive pressure, we could carry Jurrah, but sadly we dont. Pity, as he is one of the most exciting players I have ever seen, for any club.

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
