Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Would hope it's around 32k by second week of NAB cup

We were sitting on 29,510 mid March last year and are tracking around 2,000 more this year. So it's possible.

We are continuing to run close to 10% higher than last year. Final total last year was 35,953. So at that rate we'll be around 38,500 membership for 2016. I suspect something special would have to happen for this to change. I guess every year we've all said what a win in the first round would do for membership but given this would be followed by a likely win against Bombers in round 2 which would be our first consecutive wins in years, it can't be overstated this year.  That said I'm still not expecting us to beat GWS rd 1.

Just shows you how big the gulf is between the big Clubs and us. After everything Essendon has inflicted on its members and the rest of the competition it's membership is still more than 50% bigger than ours. As bad as the Blues are they are around 25% bigger than us. And we are up over 10% on this time last year. Ouch!

Should Melbourne experience the same modest success as North has achieved over recent years I would expect membership to be in at least the low 40k's or even higher.

Should the team climb even higher then I would expect  at least Geelong like membership numbers. I'm not sure if the club could ever challenge the big clubs in this regard but a dozen or so years ago Hawthorn was struggling and look what they've achieved even with their sh*tty colours.

Dead right Mate. If Hawthorn can be the leading club for Memberships then so can the MFC with prolonged hard work as a CLUB.

Hawthorn were absolute rubbish until Norm Smith gave John Kennedy a few tips

i wish he hadn't said a word... :)

To be honest I don't think the gulf is as big as the numbers let on.

We haven't played finals since 2006, yet have more than or close to the number of members that North, the Saints and Bulldogs have, three teams that have played in many finals and Prelims, and a few Grand Finals in Saints' case. Melbourne has been the worst club over a ten-year period, and one of the worst of all time, yet we still manage to hover around a respectable figure.

If we were to make finals this year and say win a final, we would crack 45k easily next year.

I'm not sure it can go much higher than that, but what's important for Melbourne is that we have a high ratio of members-to-attendance. That is, we have a lot of members attending matches. I think in that regard we are among the league leaders. That's important because we probably have the highest concentration of support in one city. The club is taking advantage of this by really closing in on its affiliation with MELBOURNE the city. It's probably a decade too late.

We need to be competitive against Hawthorn Sydney Freo W/Coast.

Our membership will rise then.

Beat only one or two of those and it has to rise. It's been a long time since I've gone into a game against these teams with any confidence of a win at all.

Can WADA verify the Essendon figures for me. Because for some reason I don't trust anything they say.

28,759 today.

While that is up on same time last year (26,592 on Feb 16) it is really disappointing that we have added only 2,500 since before Christmas.

It shows how critical it is to win games to win back the hearts and wallets of the general supporter.

Maybe it is only us diehards on DL's who are optimistic about our prospects.

Hopefully, the upcoming Family Day at Luna Park gives it a decent boost.

26,641 - 17 Feb 2014

26,639 - 18 Feb 2015

So compared to last year in the period 22 Dec to 17 Feb we are down about 20% on membership growth (3187 v  2542) and 25% in the first couple of weeks of February. No wonder no membership numbers have been posted for a while. Hope this trend doesn't keep going or we will be back to close to last year's total.

As mickey mouse as it may be, we really need to shine in the NAB challenge competition, to excite those not yet committed.  I would hate to see injuries as a result, but we need to clearly show we're ready to improve markedly.

I got sent a reminder on my mobile that I haven't renewed my Premium M'ship, It appeared below the same message from last year.

Last year they offered: Two guest passes and a chance to win a signed Guernsey

This year they offered: A chance to win 2 guest passes.

Now I always sign up (every year), some times I do it late, and these offers don't make a difference to me, but they may to some out there, but an offer to win guest passes is a bit of a joke.

With sod all members we prob can't afford offering that and still make a decent operating profit.

I need to be perfectly clear that i have no idea how to market a membership drive, but the drive seems a bit limp sometimes. I would like to see Roosy and Co, come out and say, "we are going to be playing a much more attractive brand of football, come and take the ride with us" It just seems to follow the same old patterns, never seems to be innovative.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
