Am I the only one who's worried about Weideman?

Injuries?

No...not alone. Id pass Prefer McKay if to take a big fwd galoot.

Recent history with some talented kids with persistent niggles rings bells

There are other choices to the Weed

I also think I'm more optimistic towards it because Roosy specifically targeted him for this role.

I'm really uneasy about this draft. all of them seem pretty underwhelming in my opinion . i hope we haven't mortgaged the farm for 2 shots at a pool of weak talent.

It feels like some on here are trying to talk themselves in to wanting some of these guys.

I hope im wrong

If you actually read the articles, as you did to provide quotes, none are actually from Mahoney or Roos. Other than something about bringing in a key position player.

I understand that they thought of him as a ready made replacement initially, but later in pre season Roos stated something about him playing forward ruck and he was used in this way in the first couple of rounds before his injury.

He will continue to play this role, ruck/forward and I can't be bothered scrolling back to find the video or articles on it.

Edit: http://m.afl.com.au/news/2015-04-20/toe-injury-to-sideline-dee

"Had impressed up forward and in a back up ruck role"

Whilst it is not a direct quote from Roos or Mahoney it is 100% true of where he was playing

There's some pretty good talent on offer to us if not brilliant. There's also some potential lemons imho.

I know the clubs fared quite well in recent years and thats what im hanging onto in this draft.

Still, seems ample opportunity to stuff it up.

Not 100% confident to tell the truth.

in FD I trust however :)

Take the best mid at 3 to me that is oliver, and then the best tall at 7/10 then use our picks in the 40'sh to get some talent up back and forward, possibly ruck. We have a lot of mids we need to ensure that we get at least one quality tall, but I don't think we should be using pick 3 as we should have at least one good tall/forward option available at 7/10.

Right, so you say I'm wrong because I didn't provide a quote from Roos and then you do exactly the same thing.... Ok.

Think you'll find he played as almost a big midfielder/utility a lot of the time he played. Given it was only 2 and 1/2 games when Dawes and Pedo were out it's not a big sample size is it?

He will play backline next year, there's absolutely no doubt about it. Why else would there be so much talk of us taking a KPF with one of our top 10 picks, and increasingly about it being pick 3? It's also his best position where his unique mix of run and size is exactly what we need.

Having said all this, to simply say he'll be a key forward or key back ignores the fact that he's a unique player who will cover a heck of a lot of ground and positions for us.

I think we're searching for information that makes sense of who we're connected to and why.

Besides, what's the alternative ?

And if the draft is as you say, let's be thankful we turned pick 6 into picks 3 and 7.

We don't have a lot of mids - its a myth.

This perception is much like my wife's recollection of child birth - like the footy season as time moves on from the event, her recollection of the pain dims more an more to the point we start believing it wasn't bad.

Of course this is just my opinion, but I challenge everyone to talk to their non MFC supporting friends and see who they would want to take from our team. The list is pretty small, most won't even be aware of the names that keep being bandied about as filling our great midfield. Conversations I have had reveal everyone wants Hogan, most would be happy Jones, Vince, Brayshaw and T Mcac. My SA and Hawk supporting friends all rate Viney. Then there is a small smattering of interest based more on supercoach results than anything else. To up the ante, I ask who they would trade a first round pick for and the list shrinks even further (Jones, Brayshaw and Hogan); if we talk top 10 then you can drop Jones out.

So other teams look out our great midfield as Jones and Brayshaw; with support from the 2V's; Even St Kilda can beat this!!!!

If we are honest the only other player that has even performed consistently (more than 10 games) in the midfield at an above average level is Tyson.

Drafting is actually a simple concept: You take the best player available regardless of position or type - you then trade for positions/types preferably identifying the need before it is urgent (reducing other teams position of strength which they gain when they know your filling a weakness).

Always liked Dunn as a forward, except he can't mark over his head.

The more I think about it, the more I believe we need more quality KPP's, at both ends. Certainly Frost will help if he comes on, although I only see him as a defender.

I remember seeing Dunn play a fwd tagging role on Deledio and not only killing him but kick 5 goals.... He did play quite a bit up fwd under Bailey from my recollection..

I only used the quote as it wasn't complete hearsay but rather a fair indication of where he was playing. Was more emphasising the change of attitude and that he was brought in to play up forward and ruck which was where he trained most of last pre season. He was a defender at GWS but brought in to fill the key position gap left by Frawley rather than a spot in defence. He will play ahead of Pedo as the fwd/ruck in my opinion and Dawes will still be the true chf. Regardless he is a handy addition, I just think he will play second ruck forward and especially while there is a gap in the side there.

Secondly the media would have no idea what we are going to select, we don't leak anymore. Would not be surprised if it's a kpf at 7 but I think it's definitely a mid at 3.

Agreed about his value, he's already one of my favourites.

Can't see us playing Hogan, Dawes and Frost in the same forward line though.

Now, tell me where did Frawley play? 99% defence, 1% forward when we had no big forwards available. Next year with Hogan, Dawes, Pedo and a top 10 KPF all around I don't see Frost being played in that 1%.

If you've seen Frost play you know he's not a forward. It's one of those things you don't need to be told.

Am I the only one who's worried about Weideman?

Injuries?

Absolutely not.

I think he is a massive risk full stop. He has had 2 bouts of ankle surgery in 12 months which is not good at all. The fact he has had a poor tank all throughout his career is another reason why i dont want especially now the game is all about work rate and gut running both ways.

Would almost rather take a punt on McKay at 7, assuming we take Oliver at 3.

I made an entire thread about this. Thanks for checking it out...

Edit - Not only that but you posted in it a few times, so why you feel the need to link it here is anybodies guess. You're a weird unit, mate.

It wouldn't surprise me if we take Weideman at P3 and who's left out of Parish and Oliver at P7.

I think the key in all of this is getting the key forward we want. I appreciate some here want the mid first, but if we set that aside for one moment...

Let's assume for the sake of this debate that outside of Weitering or Schache they think the 196 cm Weideman is the best foil for Hogan. How do they get him ? Quality key forwards are very hard to come by and when you get a chance you've got to pull the trigger early. We know the club has him in their sights with Curnow being the other option. Do they rate the two talls equally ? Is Weideman the preferred choice by some margin ?

As much as I'm warming to Oliver and like Parish, mids are far easier to come by. If the club is bullish on Weideman I reckon they have to take him with P3.

P3 Weideman

P4 Parish/Oliver

P5 Francis

P6 Milera

P7 Oliver/Parish

P8 Curnow

(Not taking into account academy picks)

Just doing some last minute reading, my extremely amateur opinion on this year's draft is if we can come away with any two of Oliver, Parish and Weideman (preferably Oliver/Parish and Weideman) I'll be happy. Very interested to see how this year's draft plays out.

Hope you're right....didn't work with Jimmy T.

Worked with Stringer though.

I do agree with you though jumbo - both Weideman and Curnow make me a little nervous, but I trust that we've done more than our due diligence and I'll back the club with whoever they select.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
