Doesn't look overly quick to be honest and no sign of defensive pressure.

Its a pass for me.

And you formed this opinion based on a three minute highlight reel?

Yes he did. Which is pretty funny as he has jumped down my throat before for judging a potential draftee on his Youtube highlights.

Just asking: how many highlight reels show anything much other than attacking highs?

I haven't seen him play, nor I suspect have many here.

No doubt the club or one of our spies has, and will evaluate and rank him as fits our needs.

Remember Cyrrrrrrrilllllll didn't test all that well, but I would have him in a microsecond ahead of he who we selected in that draft, who I do admit I had never seen either to that time. I had see Cy and liked him even then.

Won best performer at the combine

Shhhhhh. Don't tell anyone.

Kinda like speed dating, but speed drafting. Glad our recruiting team are more thorough than that!

Sheeeesh tough crowd!

I am only going by highlights (which majority of hypocrites do here) and personally i thought he was similar to Jay Kennedy-Harris where while he has pace he is not the explosive small forward like a Garlett or Betts. If we picked him up of course i wouldn't be disappointed but if rumours are true and we pick up Kennedy, that will be Garlett, Kennedy, Kent, JKH and Rioli who will be all under 180cm and vying for a small forward role. I think if we bring in Kennedy that should do for now in terms of small forward options.

Geez, if we can find a way to get an extra pick inside the top 15, Lovell or Rioli would be my top recommendations.

The later clubs still find ways to get deadset guns even with their lowly first round picks.

After seeing his combine results I'm more inclined to think he's a good get. Late round 1 or early round 2 if we could manage to pick him up at that range would be awesome. He could be gone by then though.

Kennedy isn't a small forward.

draft combine was equal second in 20 metre sprint and won the 30 metre repeat sprint...if he's still there by our second pick might be worth it

Seriously.

Have been having a think about him and whether or not we'd be tempted to pick him at 7 if we go with one of Curnow, Francis or Weideman with pick 3.

I understand why he's not being talked up as a top 10 draft pick but as far as elite skills, agility, football smarts and general lording go, he'd have to be top one or two surely. He is Cyril's nephew and he looks like he could be every bit as good.

The question then becomes: Will he?

Here's a little story.

I used to play footy for Old Scotch in the Amo's, (the school in which Cyril boarded) and a handful of the blokes I played with either finished in the same year, played school footy with him or were mates with him.

A particular conversation that remains with me was the story of why a player with his elite football skills and athletic capabilities went outside the top 10 in the draft and basically there were two main reasons. The well documented one being that some of his combine test results were less than satisfactory and had made recruiters question his work ethic and application. But the more significant reason and one that still makes me smirk is that during the interview process with clubs at the combine, he'd choose (depending on which club it was) to either present really well or to present really poorly. And this, (so I was told) was the main reason he wasn't picked up before Hawthorn and Hawthorn was where he was keen to go to.

Now whether you choose to believe it or not, I don't mind. However, it certainly gives me a bit of perspective, (albeit from a sit-at-home draft expert) when assessing potential 'risk' factors involved in taking a player who certainly hasn't 'dominated' numbers wise at TAC cup or Nationals level.

As they say, we're assessing these kids on the players they'll become, not what they already are.

Daniel Rioli has elite AFL traits and attributes. He is the type of player that we are genuinely crying out for. He is as talented as his uncle. He performed unbelievably well at the draft combine unlike Cyril. Unfortunately I don't know what his strategy was during interviews...

I think our list and club are now in the position to draft a player like him, (who doesn't have favourably comparable numbers to the other highly rated players being spoken about). I think it's time we take someone with his talent levels and develop him into the player we hope he could become.

It seems a long shot, but I'm convinced.

(That handball at 38 secs. GTFO.)

That goal at 2:13 is freaky. It's only a highlights reel, but this kid could be amazing. What pick will he go at? Some here have said about 25.

Must have some defensive pressure if he averages 4.7 tackles a game...

I wouldn't immediately dismiss Rioli.

Could be a chance at 7.

Only way we pick him up is if he somehow slides to our 3rd pick.

Could you imagine the backlash if we took him at 7 and he turned into another Molan/Cook while whoever goes at 8 (Francis, Curnow, Weideman, Collins) starts tearing it up.

Only a brave or stupid man would pick Rioli as early as 7.

Posted

Hawks will be pencilling him in for their first or second pick, both in the teens.

Dermie liked to pick from the teens.

The player that Rioli has become could have only worked at the Hawks, he is not the type of player, that would make a bad team look good, he is pure icing, cameo type of players can only work at really good team.s

Disagree in your view that Cyril could only have worked at Hawks, he could have the same sort of influence in half the teams in the competition. I imagine he would be just as important and influential at the likes of Sydney, Fremantle, West Coast, Geelong, Collingwood, Port Adelaide, Adelaide, North Melbourne, Richmond.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
