Clearly the FD has its eye on a player in particular and are taking no chances so have snared Pick 3. Who that player will be remains to be seen.

3-8 is pretty gloomy. Our first rounder next year should be 5-9, so for argument's sake let's say pick 7. Trading 6&7 for 3&10 isn't bad. Downgrading 29 in a shallow draft also isn't much of a sacrifice to make.

It's a bold move and I like it.

Let's say we finish 9th or 10th and end up with pick 10 next year. That means we just got a free upgrade from 6 to 3, which appears to be because we have our eye on someone we know would be gone at 6. Even if we have pick 6 again, it is still better to go from 6->3 then it is to go from 10->6. Shrewd move.

In case anyone missed it Roos, PJ and Mahoney have been crystal clear who they want at the club - competitors. Parish sounds like one. The Melk and Kennedy both appear to be competitors. Add these pick ups to recent pick ups like Petracca, Brayshaw, Viney and Vandenburg and we have a core of hard at it fierce players.

I love that the club has a clear, publicly stated plan for building their list and they have gone about getting the type of players who fit that plan.

I watched the GWS replay for the first time last night (withdrawal pains) and what stood out is how fierce the players were. Salem taking down Cameron and competing with much bigger players, his niggle and refusal to back down, the attack on the ball by Harmes (and his niggle with McCartney), Vineys manic tackling, Michies attack on the ball, Gawndogs energy and Hogans ferocity both in the air but also on the ground. Terrific to watch and exactly what Roos wants.

I have no doubt Watts was dropped for that game to send him a clear message that you get with the program or see ya round. He said as much a couple of weeks later when making a public statement that he was super keen to stay with the dees but knew he needed to get more competitive.

Players who we want (ie competitors) will want to come to our club.

Bring on 2016.

I have one other highlight of Salem that I cant get out of my head, it was against Sydney and was just a loose ball win over Buddy, Salem surprised Buddy, beat him at a ball in the air (not overhead but not on the ground), duck and weaved and left Buddy behind looking very second rate. Was only something small but was full of class and composure which I am not used to seeing in our team. Still makes me smile!

I'm sorry, but early draft picks in isolation mean nothing. Draft picks equates to draft recruitment. Our tanking years were designed to get early draft picks. It ended up being a massive fail.

Yeap agree, that was just such a shocking period I would hope that PJ has put in place the key people needed to make sure that doesn't;t happen again. Roos, Goody, Macca etc to develop these guys to where we need them to be.

While progressing on field to then be able to land some free agent gems over the next few years to push us to a solid finals team.

The trade for mine was more along the lines of:

Howe for 29 - fair trade

Toump for Kennedy and pick 50 - probably did well there.
