Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

I don't mind the Melksham, Kennedy and Bugg pick ups. I'm a bit disappointed we gave pick 25 for Melksham rather than 29 but that's what you get when you have a coach obsessed with win-win, fair deals (remember Jolly for pick 15?), and if every club held off in the hope of using different picks later in trade-week no deals would ever get done.

The disappointing thing in my opinion is some of the gaping holes in our list that have not been addressed at all.

Outside pace - no interest in Seedsman or Freeman.

Elite kicks off half back - no interest in Suckling.

Help for Hogan up forward - no interest in Walker.

Help for Gawn - no interest in Smith, Simpson, Giles, Currie.

For a coach that talked up how aggressive we would be in trade week I'm a bit surprised.

I think Melksham and Kennedy are both deliberately targeting more speed.

If Bugg comes in I will be interested in where they play him, he's a pretty handy kick so it wouldn't surprise to see him go through the back line.

Agree we need help for Jess, but Walker aint the answer. Dixon would've been juicy!

How do you know we weren't interested in those players? Alot of assumptions in that post my friend.

Personally I'd be glad if we weren't itnerested in Suckling. Can easily see him turning to water in a developing side.

Some of the angst on this thread about our deals thus far is ridiculous. We got what the market determined, nothing more nothing less.

I had a bit of time for Howe but certainly recognised his limitations. People commented on his turnover in the last game following his specy. I thought more typical was that the kick did not lead to the resulting goal, his decision to drag the ball in and get pinged in front of goal did. I just reckon he is not that smart a player. Most on DL don't rate Howe that highly yet some think a professional football club will rate him more highly and offer up a top 20 pick? The whole GC is a furphy, not least because we don't actually know what we would have ended up getting.

The Melk? Are people seriously worried about the difference between pick 25 and 29?

The Toump? Fact is he had his opportunity to cement his future at the dees and as much as i always maintained it was too early to say if he was a bust as player (and to an extent still in that he might still go up a level) it's not too early to say he was a bust for us. Again most of DL did not rate him yet somehow we were going to get an early second round? If we get bugg for pick 50 then we are on top.

As for the fact that he was a pick 4 again it is a furphy and the reality busts happen and clubs also don't always get great deals to happen. Many here seem to laud Collingwood for their shrewd negotiating yet the best they got for Freeman (who didn't even play a game for them), a pick 10, was a swap of picks in the sixties and the saints second rounder next year. If that was us people would be gnashing and wailing.

Edit: just watched the replay of the GWS as i had had yet to watch the replay. I remember at the game being annoyed with Howe for his stupidity costing us a goal. He didn't drag the ball in after all. He bloody tapped it out when he should have held it under him. There's no way he would have been pinged as he never really took the ball , just ended up on the bottom of the pack. Broke rule 101 and tapped it out in the back line and they scored. Dim wit.

So much for improving our draft position.

Thank that high flying fl0g that plays for the filth now for that.

Well geez, if we were going to take our second rounder to the draft we probably shouldn't have given up 25 so hastily. What harm was there in waiting to see if we got Port's for Toump?

I agree jumbo but FMD u have to wonder what goes on.

This isn't the first time we have come out of the trade period feeling dissapointed.

Geez guys...think positive!

They were comments from a commentator. It's not a comment made from the inner sanctum and trade period goes for another 2 days. The club may still intend to look at improving our draft position.

Gee whiz, calm down fella.. probably worth using punctuation too, I'm out of breath.

To my mind Melksham is a definite upgrade on Howe. Keenedy v Toumpas will play out, but Kennedy fills a need that Toumpas couldn't provide (speed).

Plus, by virtue of Trengove and Petracca 'joining' in next year.. I would say our list has definitely improved.

I'm ok whit what's happened.

In brief I don't think we wanted either Howe or Toumpas on the list but we did want Kennedy and Melksham. We got 29 and 50 thrown in and if we can use 50 on Bugg we get three players we want for two we don't for a drop of 4 spots from 25 to 29.

Where's the key forward that we need to support Hogan? If nothing else happened during trade week other than getting Tom Lynch (Ade), I would be content. The trades we have made are merely speculative, which doesn't instill me with confidence.

I agree that we needed another forward but I wouldn't want just any forward (ie. Walker, Casboult).

We obviously were never in the picture for Dixon because of his association with Hinkley, and Lynch never wanted to go in the first place... so i'm a little confused as to what you think we could've done?

Besides, we might still pick up a handy foil in the draft.

Charlie Curnow or Sam Weideman may come in from the draft to support Hoges.

I'm just saying that the trades haven't necessarily improved our list. From where I sit, it's a break even at best.

With bringing in the likes of Melksham, Kennedy and probably Bugg, including having Petracca and Trengove back in the picture, would anyone be upset if we reached for Weideman come draft time?

Clearly Weitering and Schache will be gone, Parish probably too come our first pick. The last time we reached for a KPF was Cook, do we dare reach again?

Yes, because anyone who show any hesitation or displeasure over any decision the cluib makes is an emotional wreck.

This sort of crap is beneath you, Red.

GWS' Tomas Bugg remains on track to join the Demons, with the club expected to use a third round pick for the 22-year-old, who has performed well in 65 games with the Giants.

After trading Jimmy Toumpas to Port Adelaide on Monday in a deal involving four clubs, the Demons hope to effectively pick up Bugg, a noted competitor, for Toumpas.

Bugg>Toumpas

Melksham>Howe

Not stellar, but we've done ok with what has been available.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
