Any mention on Adcock? Could we get a few years from him- do a Cross'? DFA, so no cost...

Edit..too late to get names right...

Seems sensible to recruit 'cheap' players who are young, competant but not yet achieving great things.

They are basically replacing draft pick 60+ (or Bail/McKenzie), and we will know much sooner whether they are going to deliver, while someone else has already paid the coaching and resources cost to get them through their first couple of pre-seasons.

Obviously within limits. The hunt for serious quality through draft and trade must go on.

But it also must be remember that modern sustained success examples like Hawthorn, Sydney and Geelong did a lot more trade-based recruiting of quality players once the terms-of-trade had shifted in their favour by being able to offer success and a proven competent operation.

Right now, we appeal to players trying to break into a team. In three years we'll be the club of choice for mature players looking to eject from sinking ships. I promise!

especially if we have a great development thing going on.

if they are a bit off we can get them early enough to sort them out.

all depends on our development coaches, & the right kids.

Folks...we aren't going to solve all our woes in one fowl swoop.

We'll get a couple of handy bods perhaps.

We might even land a fish.Who knows.

Rome wasn't built in a day yet so many are judging how we're travelling by whether we are able land the 'silver bullet or whatever "

Hopefully the lust is further weeded and added to.

Next year we'll trade up again.

No leaps and bounds...incremental improvement only i suggest.

I don't think that deal makes us better but we are kind of stuck if both Howe and Toump want out.

Doesn't make us better but on 2015 form Howe and Toumpas are replaceable and then we get Kennedy in for some competition for a half forward spot and Melksham and Bugg for the half back/midfield spots.

One of the things Mahoney said that resonated to me was that we have a lot of players capable of having better years next year than they did this year.

I'd love to be trading for a gun 2nd forward and gun midfielder to fill gaps. But given that's unlikely I'll take trading guys who might want to leave for decent young players who will help push the competition.

Bringing these guys in should help the development of the list as a whole. Then it's a matter of drafting more talent for us to really improve the quality. If we haven't given up our best draft picks to bring these guys in then that gives us a chance to get more quality talent.

all we can do, is what we can, where we are.

I agree blzb, No leaps and bounds, no super fish, but real inner growth & deevelopment. it's what we built on in 84 - 85... the intakes came later.

If we improve on last years haul we'll be doing bloody fantastically!

Land another - Garlett, Vandenburg, Frost, Brayshaw, Stretch, etc... and we will advance.

Maybe our turn sometime to land a Pav or Fyffe in the draft

yes, or a wines, or a stringer...

I look forward to a tall, new in our jumper come December.

Im not saying there may be no genuine surprise packet from trade week. Im just suggesting we aren't likely to surmount all our list problems in one hit. It's been a process and will continue to be so.

I do hope though we make no glaringly obvious mistakes

I cant help thinking about last year and all the mice and clock and Dangerfield talk. At the end of the day despite being " disappointed" we did end up recruiting both Brayshaw and Petracca with the picks that we may have given away. Petracca is of course an unknown but by all reports... Cant help but wonder how much Adelaide be regretting that now. Dangerfield is of course an out and out gun and Id love him at the club but at the expense of Brayshaw and Petracca? not sure.

So, "big fish" while satisfying to catch dont always lead to the greater success. If we end up with pick 6 this year it may yet be a good thing.

Thats a good point W 11. they had the chance to trade for a couple of picks & a player. rolled the dice. & now he's gone anyway.

this is why I do not want us to give up P-6. we have Brayshaw, Petracca, Salem, Viney, Stretch, ANB, lets add a Curnow or Weideman to the list.

The best we can get from trade week are blokes like Bernie Vince and Herry L. They were definitely in their club's top ten players but they could never be earmarked as 'the man'.

We are a fair way way from being a destination club for the likes of Dangerfield et al. One good thing is that managers aren't telling their clients to avoid us like the plague crossed with that 'White Chicks' movie.

If we are unable to land an A grade mid, we go tall in the draft. Picking Curnow or Weidman

Or recruit a good 2nd forward to support Jesse. Besides Freo,`every single one of the top 8 sides have a 2nd forward to support their main man

Gunston for Roughy, Darling for JJK, Jenkins for Tex, Vickery for Reiwoldt. Our mids are developing well. So if we can't land a top mid, a 2nd forward would be a great recruiting focus

Dunn and Omac are defenders. Not really sure where Frost plays best but I see him as a ready made replacement for when Dunn retires. Pederson tries but is unreliable at times and is normally in the wrong spots. I'm talking about 2nd forwards along the lines of Jenkins and Darling. Not those specific players, but those types. Would Sam Reid be available? Would have a much bigger role at the Dees than at the Swans. Was on fire until Buddy and Tippett came. Guys like Ben Griffiths or Jack Redpath?

so far it would seem the obvious ins and outs are:

in: melksham, bugg, kennedy

out: toumpas, second round pick, howe

possibly out: dawes, watts, tyson (i have no idea where the tigers rumour came from?)

B: Jetta - T McDonald - Garland

HB: Bugg - Frost - Salem

C: Melksham - N Jones - Brayshaw

HF: vandenBerg - Dunn - Kennedy

F: Harmes - Hogan - Garlett

Foll: Gawn - Vince - Viney

I/C: Kent - Pedersen - Michie - Petracca

Emerg: Lumumba - O McDonald - Newton

Outside the 25: Trengove - Stretch - JKH - Hunt - ANB - Grimes - Spencer - M Jones - King

anyone i've missed? edit: added kent

we look awfully light on for talls. i'd really like weideman as long as he tests okay at the combine. he has the height, reportedly the skill, and best of all we'd take him one before the filth could.

Family connections to Richmond...

...they will have enough on their plate trying to get Yarran.

I like the look of Reid, and think he may be one that we stand a decent chance at poaching. With Buddy & Tippett, he seems out of place in their team, especially when they're playing on the smaller SCG surface. I think he would be a drastic improvement on Dawes and would help make the forward line look more complete.

Missed - Tyson/Kent.

Whilst my team would be slightly different there's one thing I do agree with and that's the Prince. Joining the likes of

Watts/Dawes/Grimes/Garland in the VFL.

We keep hearing from the coach about a need for competitors and skilled players, it will be disappointing if he goes back on that.

I wonder if we're one of the Victorian clubs who have spoken to Stevie J....

I hope not!

The forward line belongs to Jesse...no interlopers nor DH allowed!!

They wouldn't be regretting anything. Dangerfield would never have come to Melbourne even if Adelaide wanted to do that deal.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
