Was there last night and the atmosphere for the vast majority of the 42k was very good, disagree with Dazzle because IMO every club has idiots. All 3 of the guys highlighted last night should be banned from sporting venues for life not just AFL venues. Apparently the clown in the Number 10 jumper was aggressive all night in and around the ground trying to start on a few people.

He should have been thrown out a lot earlier and a few of the men in and around the area he was should have acted a lot earlier, and not left it to the female ( who I know and is a former work colleague of mine). People like him get full of bravado when they are allowed to carry on without intervention.

Havent seen what the offender looks like, but I would hazard a guess that most blokes wouldn't want to confront a bloke like that because they would expect a smack in the gob. A woman certainly wouldn't be expecting that. Only the lowest life forms would do something like that. (or a druggo off his nut)

Agree with the comment that these type of people should be banned from all sporting events, forever. Pieces of schit ruin a day for everyone.

Sorry to hear about your friend. Hope she is ok.

Disgusting behaviour. Sad that a woman had to stand up to that feral guy to get him to tone it down in front of the kids. In the same situation I would have done exactly the same thing. The public need to feel safe going to the football.

Exactly. That's how you start to make inroads into this major societal issue.

didn't shame go out of fashion in the 90s (maybe earlier)

more likely to give him a cult following

probably hurt him more to keep him anonymous

I didn't see this post until I had already written my thoughts in the Finals thread; I will repeat them here:

You've just got to love the Freo supporters... particularly the guy in the number 10 Freo jersey who started abusing anybody and everybody and when approached by a woman who told him he was ruining it for the kids, punches her in the face. Seriously, there is a very good case for banning the sale of alchohol completely from these kinds of events. I hope the guy does jail time considering all of the publicity the violence against women campaign has been receiving lately... there is absolutely no excuse!

The AFL has made amazing inroads in improving game experience and security. It's much better than it used to be. Banning alcohol is hyperbolic and reactionary.

Why in this country do people always resort to that, respond in that way when something bad happens?

"Oh, someone got drunk and hit a woman...better ban alcohol!"

Even with a decent record I've never seen or heard of anyone getting jail time for those offences (in WA).

well, Marley Williams got off with no jail time and a token, meaningless penalty..... So there's your precedent. Seems that that behaviour is ok over there.

I believe he was charged with GBH as well, much more serious assault

In Smiths case perhaps Eric Cantona's actions might have been appropriate....

It's not simply a reaction to that incident. I have long thought that alchohol at sporting events like the footy where emotions can run high, is not a great thing. I enjoy a drink or several as much as the next person, but for me, I'd rather not see it at the footy. Are you telling me that people couldn't survive three hours at the footy without a drink? At least a pub is a relatively controlled environment... something that the footy most definitely is not.

So do I hardtack. The problem is too many blokes are tanked before they even get to the game.

Its not the alcohols fault the [censored] hit a woman.

Get me drunk and the worst ill do is give you a cuddle

That's you... but give that Freo bogan a skinful and he'll punch your lights out if his team's not doing too well.

Go to a game and it's normally a queue to get a beer so I'd be looking at targeting surrounding pubs in terms of responsible service. Not a cure all, I know but I'd be amazed if that loser wasn't sloshed pre game.

To the eternal diminution of justice, the provocation defence has been abolished.

( in Victoria

maybe not in WA ?)

It's only a defence here for an offence where 'assault' is an element. Edited by Ethan Tremblay

Good article imo.

I have a little to do with footy in the Mornington Peninsula and crowds are getting worse. There's more booze and there's a greater willingness of supporters to impose themselves on the game. I.e. The Nepean GF culminated in Somerville supporters throwing full cans at the Rosebud coach as he celebrated - pretty sure nothing happened. .Apparently arrests.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
