Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB – JAKE MELKSHAM

Spot on. There is no rush, no other team is going to pay a second rounder for Melksham. Maybe Collingwood want 25 for Kennedy - who I rate a far better prospect than Melksham - so perhaps we are trying to keep 25 for Kennedy, and are trying to free up a second rounder somewhere else.

Perhaps more likely that we're waiting on the 3rd rounder from Essendon to trade for Kennedy. Or Bugg. 25 for Kennedy would be way overs.

If we get a 3rd rounder back for Melksham, it means we've got Melksham PLUS Kennedy for pick 25. Which sheds a totally different light on our trading.

Yeah, I think that makes sense. That would be a great result. Melksham and Kennedy for 25 would be a fantastic result, it offsets the prospect of losing Melksham due to a WADA ban.

I agree. If we can finish this week with our second and third rounder for Melksham, Kennedy, and Bugg we are on track for a big off season.

A big off season? They are 3 average players. They may improve our depth but we won't be seeing finals.

Snap,

This is how I see it playing out.

Hence Ess saying is done for pick 25 talking the trade up and why melb are saying a 2nd rounder is around the mark.

Suspect some other trades will eventuate too.

Not necessarily 'big fish', but players that will improve our overall list.

Roos has repeatedly stated that we will be very active this trade period.

I suspect the three players we have been linked to, if a trade comes through, would suggest we have been very active this trade period. I really doubt there will be anymore.

Melksham, Bugg and Kennedy will all be very good additions too.

At the start of the year, would you have proposed trading in the players above for Howe ,Toumpas and whatever minor picks are involved? Nine months on, Bugg and Kennedy have hardly played in the seniors, and Melksham has been an average player in a poor team. Howe has played every game and Toumpas has looked ordinary.

There's no possible way you can spin things to make out like we're looking to have a successful trade period. I know it's early, but nothing that looks like happening is anything to get excited about.

Whilst it appears there is nothing too much to be excited about I think the club is building the list in the right way at least. They are trying to fill holes in the list with players of a certain age profile that they think they can get a certain amount of service out of. Hopefully those players will reduce the holes in our list from the bottom 6 players in the 22 & make us a lot more competitive. I will admit that we could do with a star player being drafted but the reality is there is another 15 or so clubs that won't land any big fish this trade period either. Building our list around Hogan, Petracca, Brayshaw & Viney is a good start. Looks like we will have to be patient & see if the club can land someone like Parish to add to that nucleus of genuine A grade undeveloped talent & build our list around those type of players until we get closer to finals & become a "destination club".

What is a success though? Besides landing a gun free agent (and for free not in a match and trade) I think success is hard to judge. Because to win a trade you almost have to have the club on the other end stuff up. Even if you get a superstar to nominate you like Brisbane and Beams it costs a hell of a lot to get them.

We've made some really good moves over the last few years.

But when you break them down almost every deal has cost something to get something which is how it's meant to work.

Our best deals:

Letting Sylvia walk for pick 23

Garlett

Our very good deals:

The Vince trade with the Sylvia pick

Signing Crossy

Letting Frawley walk

The Salem Tyson for 2,20 deal

We can't recreate any of those this year it seems and that might be disappointing, but it's also about opportunity and needs. There isn't a Garlett this year as far as I can tell. We don't have a Sylvia to flick or a Frawley. We don't have the need for Crossy type. Trying such an ambitious move as the Tyson trade isn't really on the table.

I find it hard to think Howe and Toumpas out for Kennedy, Bugg and Melksham makes our list any worse. I'm a touch disappointed we didn't have someone better than Melksham lined up knowing Howe would leave. But then I look around at the trades and I struggle to see who it would be. For the late 1st to 2nd round market (because we aren't signing a star this trade period) there's:

Henderson, Yarran, Zac Smith, Redden (left for success), Jetta, Sinclair (contracted, would avoid us), Bennell (no), Ben Lennon (unlikely). It's not a great bunch.

Aish and Freeman are the 2 young players out of contract, leaving cheaply and possibly available that could fit our list build and have great upside. But I'm not exactly disappointed we didn't get them.

I don't think West Coast made a single trade last year and they jumped right up the ladder. The Dogs traded out Cooney and Griffen for Boyd (who rarely did anything) and jumped up the ladder on the back of their kids improving not trade ins really. Hamling was a nice find as a delisted free agent and that was about it.

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
