Melksham for 25 is a fair deal. He's a relatively young, talented player who has played over 100 games of footy, so Essendon have already done all the donkey work for us.

He is also a much more talented player than your average AFL footballer, and could fill a very good role for us in an area that we have been poor in for a number of years (providing line breaking run from half back).

When I think about his recruitment I keep thinking about Rhyce Shaw. Shaw was an inconsistent wingman who was always in and out of the VFL. He was traded for a 3rd round pick to Sydney, who gave him a specific role in defence to use his run. At the time everyone was laughing at Sydney for trading for Shaw, since he was always derided by Collingwood supporters. Shaw took this simplified role, along with his added experience, and played nearly 150 more games with Sydney, including finishing 2nd in the B&F twice.

Melksham has talent and speed, and has been underperforming for the last two years at a basketcase of a club. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that a move to a better club, along with a simplified role across half back, would see Melksham become an important member of a good team. Certainly there is a better chance of him doing it than pick 25 (or whatever it becomes). You certainly couldn't pick up a player with his talent in this draft with pick 25.

Action creates Action.

The list has to change. We need more depth. Goodwin and McCartney have seen something and its their informed opinion that counts.

Good, deal done. Next..........

I agree LI, & I'd rather a melksham, than a mackenzie, bail, or plenty of others that have left the building over the past 2 seasons... onward, then upward.

My Essendon friend just laughed at me over the trade.

It's been a long time since he's had any reason to laugh. I don't like it.

My Collingwood mate laughed at me when they got a second rounder for Dews and his still laughing.

Who did Collingwood use on that pick?

Agree. Especially when (hopefully) its another weak draft. Other than 2013 its a lot more miss than hit so I don't mind giving the pick the flick for a ready made player who will start round 1.

Historical picks 25-29

2011. Seb Ross, Todd Elton, Sam Kerridge, Fraser McIness, Alex Forster

2012. Spencer White, Viney (f/s), James Stewart, Tim O'Brien, Tom Clurey

2013. Daniel McStay, Zac Merrett, Sean Lemmons, Lewis Taylor

2014. Daniel Nelson, Toby McLean, Lukas Webb, Dillon Viojo Rainbow

This just reminds me of how hard we won the 2012 trade week. Even if we did get in Chris Dawes and Dom Barry.

Hogan, plus Viney at pick 26.

About the only thing done properly at MFC from 2008- mid 2013.

Second rounder seems about right. He's played 100 games, twice in their B&F top 10 (including this year). Has his faults, but lack of competitivity isn't one, and it seems that the club have done their due diligence.

Half back an interesting option if that's what they're thinking, would push a player like Grimes out I imagine, and/or free up Salem (as has been suggested).

Just don't think we'll see him next season though, which is less than ideal.

It isn't just this forum. I just skimmed over 300 comments from 18 clubs worth of supporters... there was not one comment from someone calling this a remotely fair trade. I know it's only Facebook, but even most people can see that the Dangerfield trade was relatively win/win for those clubs in the long run.

" Massive overs, the guy is a fringe player and a 3rd round selection at best"

"you must think it's Christmas. Melbourne don't ever deserve to make finals."

"I reckon bombers would of accepted pick 80 for him"

"This is why Melbourne are the biggest joke of a football club the pay way overs on average players, first round pick for Dawes few years back and now an early second round pick for melksham , get ready for another season of mediocrity"

" I would of been happy for him to be delisted but I'll take pick 25. "

" If Melbourne ever had the plot, they have surely now lost it.."

"waste pick 25 for a vfl player lol"

"Bombers #winning melksham anything over $300k a year is abhorrent behaviour from Melbourne"

"Best news ever. We even got a decent pick for the list clogger"

I had to stop, it was seriously just pages of abuse.

To be honest mate, I was talking about the bitter people just constantly bagging each other out on here. Gather I wasn't clear on that.

Just so much of it and all so so petty.

I'm not a massive fan on Melksham, but he is pretty much now a Dee, he def has upside, I'll back him in to make good on that talent until he proves otherwise.

Pick 25 over the last 5 years:

2010 - Patrick Karnezis

2011 - Seb Ross

2012 - Spencer White

2013 - Daniel Mcstay

2014 - Daniel Neilson

All of the above are completely worthless.

To make it worse this is also reported to be a weak draft.

I'll take a afl proven 115 gamer, past top 10 pick that's played in a sinking ship any day of the week

Fair enough. I can see the upside but there's a large element of the unknown taking a player facing WADA sanctions. Think that's a first for our club.

I can understand taking the punt for key position players like Ryder and Carlisle but find it a bit perplexing for a fringe type like Melksham. Guess we have to back Goodwin and McCartney on this one.

Mahoney said a second round pick.

Perhaps next years after the WADA findings have been finalised.

I would say YES if that is the case.

Druggies would want that pick now to rebuild now- perhaps this could be the roadblock we need to say "step in to the PSD, Milkman"

Hasn't had a good run the last few years, pick 25. But lets not forget that it may end up as pick 28.

Also, I definitely wouldn't call McStay worthless. Will be a good player.

Deal hasnt been tabled yet. It needs to be officially lodged at AFL house. Now we could just be dragging our feet or maybe the Dons need to wait on St Kilda before they can finalise Melksham.

The problem with this argument is you need to factor in every player drafter by pick 25 or later from those drafts, not just the pick alone.

Why is there nothing official on the MFC website yet? Is that not a bit odd? Has this deal been signed off or not?

It isn't official yet. The speculation is based on what Mahoney & Dodoro discussed via the media, that the trade would involve a second round pick.

It may be that we are asking for a pick as well as Melksham etc.

Posted

Well, considering that the deal hasn't been done yet and the vague language of a 'second round pick' - perhaps we are trying to secure another 2nd round pick to give for Melksham.

that would be my thinking...and Ess might like to know what that other 2nd rounder is before signing the paperwork

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
