WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB – JAKE MELKSHAM

Big trade chat on ABC grandstand an hour ago with industry insiders. Melksham straight swap to Dees for second round pick on 4 year deal is done they reckon. Of all the trade talk they discussed they were surer of this than any others.

If true, it's a poor trade from our end!

Who are the industry insiders? I immediately equate our 2nd rounder as being around pick 20/21. This year, once FA compensation is allocated, it may be around pick 25. Admittedly it's supposedly a shallow draft, but I still think it's overs.

Will be very angry if that happens. Essendon should at least give us a 3rd rounder back.

Above pick 25 apparently, which is being talked of as a quality marker. The panel all thought it was a good deal and fair, and very Roos-like with its efficiency.

That trade is reasonable. Weak draft - our pick 24 is like 40 any other year. No guarantees with that pick.

Don't like trading off our second rounder so quickly. In the past we have used it very resourcefully and I think we could use it for a better deal then Melksham.

This leaves us with just our first and third rounder left to trade out

Was there significant criticism of Bernie Vince when we traded for him? Can't remember.

At this stage of the Vince rumours:

prob not quite the plyer we are after. Id like sloane.

Not sure, would need to know what else was available but I would probably look at it this way. He will be 28 by next season, he's apparently a good guy who likes a to have a good time with his mates but is an unfulfilled talent. Sound like someone we know?

I think we just hold on to Col, I'm not sure Bernie is going to add a lot to the mix now.

Think is best is past him and would not trade anything in the first two rounds for him. Don't get me wrong he is a good ordinary player who had a couple of really good years but there are plenty of them out there who fail to reach those standards again, therefore IMO they are not worth trading decent picks away for

What are we toping up for a flag! g only a team toping up whould trade a first rounder for a player like vince

I reckon they'd be eying off our second rounder.

I wouldn't take Vince for our second rounder either.

Excitement level: David Rhodan

I was talking about Vince.

Another aging fringe midfielder. Forgive me for not doing backflips.

You want some optimism? Excuse me while I search for some. I'm not getting any with Vince I give you the mail.

I understand we need midfielders and believe Vince would add to our team, but we should not be going after fairly average 28 year olds that cost high draft picks and command a big salary for four years IMO.

Agree.

Pick 20 is overs for Vince.

People have mentioned he will be then 2nd best mid while pick 20 might not make it.

Are posters so certain with Vince? He can play but there are 2 Bernie Vinces. Ask any Crow supporter and they will tell you, he strings together some rubbish games. 28 year old too.

Pick 20, Pick 36 for Bernie Vince, Lyon and Pick 42 would be my go.

I actually like Lyon more then Vince.

That was 4 seasons ago.

Now he's a contributor, and a relatively inconsistent one at that...his best is better than Sylvia, but it'd be a fairly like for like replacement.

Not happy with that deal at all. Pick 23 got us Frost, O-Mac and ANB last year and this year we want to settle for [censored] Melksham? A kid who may be ineligible to play for two years??

Abhorrent list management if true considering the huge risk he brings. Don't forget that players like Nat Fyfe have been taken in the 20's.

This has to be a joke, 2nd rounder and 4 years for this watermelon when someone of his calibre could surely be found lurking in a Lower level (Vanders for example), whose call is this? The ASADA thing too, this is so so dumb!

Just when you thought things were turning around

Wada, just, WADA

I hate to see the bummers get any value from players who are about to be banned.

They will be laughing their heads off with this trade. The delaying tactics, and stupidity from opposition recruiters, has really worked well for the cheating filth.

*If by some chance they are found not guilty, I think he will be a handy player for us. Looks like we really are trying to rid ourselves of a soft underbelly, by bringing in competitors. Hope it works better for us, than it does for essedun.

I'm pretty happy with this. Can't stand the bloke but that should never be a reason not to recruit him. He can seriously play, all Essendon players are well down on their best for the obvious reasons. Hell even Zaharakis has looked extremely ordinary the last 2 years but I still rate the guy. At worst will add solid depth

? I'm confused. How does an article from 2013 relate here? Who has said Melksham will earn 400k? Even if that is correct, Enright whilst being a champion is nearly 70 and wanting to repay his club. Not exactly the same situation

My point is that it was only two years ago a three time premiership player was being paid roughly the same amount as we are now offering an NQR from Essendon.

I'm just disagreeing with your assertion that he will be depth at best, but rather a list clogger that will add no value to the club, and an expensive one at that (if the reports are accurate that we are indeed offering him 1.6 million over 4 years).

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
