POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 22

Demonland

I am an unashamed Grimes supporter, but I think he has been hard done by. Dropped earlier in the year when I think he was playing good footy, and the sub a couple of times since. He goes all day, why make him the sub? Save that for a young fella.

He has the odd clanger, and I have noticed a majority are on his left foot. Doesn't excuse them, but just interesting.

Jetta holds the ball up whenever he gets it. Never plays on. Almost like he's waiting for the opp'n players to flood back.

I've mentioned a few times that we don't turn around and get behind the mark quickly enough after taking a mark, it drives me insane.

Basically, if you are going to play on you need to know within two seconds (absolute maximum) any longer than this and you must go back to take the kick. When going back to take the kick you must face the goals front on and run backwards to get behind the mark so that you have space to kick the ball and you don't drift sideways off the mark.

Sadly, what Melbourne do is they slowly turn around, by which time the opportunity to play on has passed then they stop, take a step sideways, get called to play on and kick under pressure when there was no need at all.

So;

Again we made unfathomable selection decisions. Making Grimes the sub. WTF is that about?? Was in the best last week and kicked a goal. They put Matt Jones in there ahead of him??

On Matt Jones saw another MJones classic fall in the back of a player to give away a mindless free. Two momentum killing OOF under NO pressure within 3mins of each other. Hopefully has played his last ever game for the club. Oh, and he had 1 possession up until half time I think.

Garland gave his customary 1st goal of the game away. I wish there was a bet for that.

We were supposed to come out fighting but alas we were 10 goals to nil down. That makes 4 weeks running we have been in that position or thereabouts. Who out here really thinks it isn't the coach?? Sure the players are pretty bad but a slight change of attitude is all I detected in the 1st qtr. And we won the tackles for the day. But I'll tell Roosy something for nothing. It aint the supporters and their negativity. In fact I am surprised there are supporters left.

Jetta holds the ball up whenever he gets it. Never plays on. Almost like he's waiting for the opp'n players to flood back.

Lost count of the number of times we had kicks smothered or waited so long before kicking the kick was mis-cued because the Freo player was right on them

We must have the dumbest footballers in the AFL. Some of the decision making is incomprehensible. They have no instinct or footy smarts. (altho I did see quite a smart along the ground kick by Newton that didn't quite come off)

The loose man in defence killed us again today. Hate to see the umber of intercept marks. The switching in their backline was as predictable as it was infuriating.

When a coach can't get players up for a game of footy there is more to it than bad players. They aren't doing what he says and he has to carry the can for that. Its pathetic.

Roos actually seems at a real loss to know what to do. He virtually admitted as much last week.

Salem and Viney for me were really the only highlights

you make some good points Jrn - though I have to admit that I do not blade roos, watching the game I did not see our players chasing, tackling well enough, kicking well enough and essentially all the sort of things a football team is supposed to do. As for the loose man, I suspect our loose man was Cross who headed up our stats, the fact that he turns it over a bit or holds onto the ball until everyones covered, a bit like Jetta, Dunn, M Jones, Garland, Hogan, Grimes, Dawes (when he gets it) and others do.

seasons almost over the players know it and are playing like it. I don't think I have seen N Jones play so many bad games in a row, ever.... Today has to have been his absolute worst.

Geez, cannot believe some of you are satisfied with that loss!

We were putrid and Freo weren't much better. If they had of been on their game and actually tried after quarter time it would've been a real belting.

Accepting mediocrity is something I don't do, we just have to keep turning over the list until we get what we want.

One of the worst games I've watched all year, by both sides. We chase the man and never hunt the ball every week, skills are deplorable.

I'm going to try for sarcasm instead of just simple negativity.

From the after-match press conference;

"Melbourne are learning lessons from the top teams. In particular, they've seen at first hand that the top teams only need to make an effort for about 40 minutes a game".

Yep. Cross one of the worst offenders at that stupid sidestep putting himself and often others under pressure when there was no need. Often in the worst parts of the ground down back as well. Started the season off ok but his game slowly went to the shizenhouzin

He has to kick on his left so much because he lacks pace, can't evade or break tackles and has no idea how to link up.

I won't be too disappointed that he's the sub because I don't see him part of the long term future.

It worked out ok but for him to call for a handball from Salem instead of shepherd was just indicative of his issues. Even his goal came from getting way too close to Hogan instead of providing some width and being able to get a clear kick or handball.

Did you miss last week? I'm slightly relieved (hardly satisfied) we put in a better effort than last week and that our trip west wasn't just to check out end of season footy trip options.

Exactly. Anyone who reckons we're "satisfied" suffers from only being able to see black and white. If you didn't hate it, you must have loved it.

I felt sick 10 minutes in to the second quarter. How I felt at the end of the game was relieved. Certainly not happy, but grateful that we weren't completely humiliated, like it looked like we might be.

I'm also aware that Freo are a greatly better side than us. That also helps offer a little context for mine.

I felt for Jones early on as he played the worst quarter I have ever seen from him prior to his injury. The cross goal turnover on quarter time was a coach killer. It wasn't a good look with the moon boot and crutches I suspect he is done for the year. I thought that Stretch, Neal-Bullen and Oscar all found out how hard it is playing against a match hardened unit and Freo were way to strong until they took their foot of the pedal. My concern is the lack of players who can dispose of the ball well and consistently. Forget M. Jones kicking 2 OOTF he is not in the future plans. Tommy Mac and Viney continually butcher it and I don't know where we go from here with them.

Viney a one sided footballer found out against top sides to do any major damage, N JONES again one dimentional footballer heart a gold and hard at it but limited, plus Garland McDonald, M Jones, etc but we should have been beaten by a hell of a lot more.

Jack Viney is a 21 year old midfielder who is getting better every week.

His disposal is improving and he was fantastic (again) today: 30 disposals and 13 tackles.

It is a joy watching him play.

Who would you have played instead. Riley? Bail? There's really nothing.

Jay Kennedy Harris and heck would have even given Kent a run.

Seriously what have we got to lose. He is NOT part of the future and never was. The fact we signed him to a 2 year deal makes them look even more stupid now.

The treatment of Grimes this year has been shocking. Picking a team on form would require you pick the players best representing you from game to game. Earlier in the year he was playing well and inexplicably was dropped. Talk about cruelling confidence. He showed he has enough to be in our best 22 as it stands. So I explore the selection panel to pick th best 22 and not stuff around hoping to find something from someone showing little at casey.

Positives for me: Cross was a solider all day.

Viney was a brute.

Salem is seriously all class. We have missed him all year. Can't wait till he moves into the midfield.

Oscar Mac was one who surprised me. While he had a few errors you can already tell he is a much much better kick then his brother. Held his ground well. Can only get better.

Gawn was actually really good. His best game for a while. 21 disposals 10 marks 30 hitouts and a goal. Great effort.

Stretch reminds me of a quicker version of Salem, has a touch of class and actually goes in hard and has a dip.

Hogan 41 goals for the year.

Grimes giving Roosy the finger for starting him sub.

Negatives

Jones injury.

Matt Jones should never EVER be allowed to pull on the jumper again. He has EDFL standard skills and should be paid out immediately!

Tom Mcdonald needs to know his limitations and spend all summer working on his kicking.. On par with Matt Jones.

Our skills is absolutely horrific! It costs us so many turnovers and goals we just need to continue to add more class.

Vince is not quite right..

Dermie kept saying all day how Oscar is neat with his skills. I can't recall a kick of his that hit the target. He looks to have a better kicking action than Tom, but so far his disposal is just as iffy. First game blues though.

My hope is if we ever get a our players working as a cohesive unit that knows their game plan and plays to it, that TMac and others will only have to kick to a target within 20 and so play within their limitations. Surely you can coach and grin players to hit a target 20 metres away? If everyone is coached to back up team mates and present forward of the ball carrier, surely the game gets easier for all.

He's got time on his side, but I'm not all that sure JKH is any good. To that end, I think whether the players in question are the future or not is irrelevant; like it or not Matt Jones and co are our present. They're here until someone better replaces them.

The only reason Grimes has gotten any game time is through the injury of others. He's a VFL grade player at best, with horrible disposal. He won't be on the list much longer.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
