Jack Redden

Some people rate Jack Watts but not Redden. It would be funny if it wasn't true.

Redden makes us better, but he has stagnated. He's on a par with Nathan Jones, but is he too similar with our other mids ?

I wouldn't knock back anyone who makes us better. But he's not a 'must have'.

But why would he want to leave a bottom club to join another bottom club. I wouldn't.

Money and a 3 probably 4 year deal, I suspect.

Or Money, Coach and Captain.

You would imagine that whoever misses out on Treloar will look closely at Redden, but they're unlikely to offer up the same sort of deal for him. Brisbane will be chasing maximum compensation so if Jack is just happy to be traded and hasn't nominated a club it will come down to which club is prepared to pay the most for him. The only way we get him is to pay more (contract and picks) than someone else is prepared to.

I'm interested in us getting better. Redden would make us better. He can turn it over but usually pretty reliable by foot. He's a very solid player. I was hoping one of Newton, Riley or Michie would make it. I don't believe they will. Redden is a massive upgrade on them. I think a change of scenery would freshen him up too. He's a B/B+ midfielder. Similar to Jones leading into his three B & F years. I want pace, contested ball winning ability and elite kicking as key criteria for future mids but that's a very tough thing to find. It's even harder to find if you're us. We need to be realistic about where we're at. Redden is the type of trade that would make us better. We've got to draft A graders and trade for B graders until we become a potential top 4 team and then we might be able to pinch an established star looking for a premiership. Jones, Vince, Tyson, Viney, Brayshaw, vandenBerg and Redden is a good start with genuine hope in Petracca, Stretch and Neal-Bullen. That's 10 midfielders plus Kent, Salem and Watts. Add an emerging A grade ruck in Gawn and we're getting there. It's still the midfield isn't it?

Spot on.

One thing we will have is some tradable players, likely starting with Jeremy Howe if, as likely, he's gone. If we can convert them into a couple of quality mids who can run we improve the area we're lagging behind others. Then if we can snag some quality in the draft as we did last year then we're a good way to improving and possibly doing so rapidly.

He's not worth it....a GWS player from their twos, or look to Box Hill Hawks.

I disagree, he would be better than Barrett from GWS twos and from there the inside mids in their twos are suspect. I think we could get away with getting both Redden and Barrett and this would be a great outcome.

If GWS are looking to get rid of Toby Greene that would be another issue.

Reddens biggest issue is injury for the last two years, he has missed a couple games but is still averaging 19 games a year for the past 5 years as well as over 20 disposals and 6 tackles. Would definitely improve our list and would be a starting midfielder, much the sterotypical Roos midfielder.

Back to the well with Jack Watts, FMD just let it rest mate.

He is not on par with Nathan Jones, he is a bit under but that said he has multiple Nathan Jones attributes that the team could benefit from.

He'd increase our depth.

As for overall, game-day improvement as part of a best 22, I don't think a player like him would do much to help our cause.

We don't actually struggle at winning the ball. We struggle at maintaining possession. And that means foot-skills and speed.

If the intention to get him is to free up a more versatile and skilled player like Vince to play him either behind the ball or on a wing, I can understand it more. I still wouldn't be chasing him hard.

Would much rather spend the dosh and picks/players to trade for someone like Bennell or Motlop.

I really think Redden would add to our side, and I think he has some development left in him that Roosy and Macca could get to work on.

not sure what his trade value would be though

That will be a big sticking point I think. I wouldn't blame the Lions for wanting to play hard ball by trying to extract a high first rounder out of someone for him. Redden isn't worth that, but if we or another side don't meet that asking price then Redden stays in QLD for at least one more year until his contract is up.

I hope we are in the hunt to get him as he will instantly improve our side, but I don't think they will let him go easily.

He would be right behind Jones, Vince, Viney, and Tyson as our 5th best mid until Brayshaw, Petracca, and/or Vanders go past him.

We would be more competitive in the middle when the above need a rest or are out of form.

I want stars and Redden ain't that but that midfield star will need help and Redden would provide that.

I disagree. It took Jones 6 years to average 23 possessions, while Redden did it in his third. Just once in 10 years has Jones averaged 100+ rating points, Redden has done it 3 times in 7.

Jones' career rating is 79.2 and Redden's is 95.

Melbourne supporters overrate Jones.

That said, I'm not fussed on Redden.

The biggest difference between the two is that Jones has been playing as a number 1 midfielder in our team for several years, 3 BNF and his importance to our team is under rated.

Statistically they may be comparable but if you are talking about player you would pick ahead of the two then i personally think that Jones is streets ahead.

Lions might be one team that might look at Dawes to fill a gaping hole.

Even if they get Schache, he won't be ready straight away.

Redden's a yes with caveats from me. Not worth a high first rounder.

Very good two way player. Not an out and out star, but doesn't put in many bad games either.

Would be a good one to take the load off Jonesy and probably along the lines of what the recruiting team would have hoped Riley might be.

That would be s dream come true. But knowing our luck both clubs would agree the Dawes would say no.

Jones is a B grader with one A grade year. A player needs multiple A grade years to be considered genuinely A grade. Well they do in my book.

Redden is also a B grader. I'll let you worry over the degrees of difference.

Btw, it wasn't overly difficult to win a B&F at Melbourne these last few years. Do you need reminding that Matt Jones and Terlich have come top 5 ?

Funny. Redden would like to go to WC. Would he get a game with them? I think a player coming from a bottom side has to be realistic with their goals. He can move to a better club in a location he prefers, but West Coast have one of the best midfields in the competition. I can't see him being a walk-up start with them.

If Selwood were to leave, then he'd fit in just nicely.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
