Is Nathan Jones captain material?

olisik is a troll

don't feed him

thats quite an accusation there mate?

How is questioning ones leadership ability trolling? we lost by 100 points yesterday and have consistently lacked on-field leadership all year. it is actually one of our biggest weaknesses, we can see our team has the talent when we are on top of things however once other teams get a run on we fail to show any fight.

we have heard before that Jones needed to alter the way he played his game to be more team orientated when Roo's took over and i get the feeling he sometimes is more concerned on his own game rather then the teams as a whole.

in my opinion this comes down to leadership.

You close down Jones and Vince and you close down Melbourne.

Hodge gets to have high standards and spray to odd mistake and inert player because they are odd.

Can one imagine what Jones would look like if he baked all the mistakes and disinterest from that first half?

He would have had a coronary.

Jones is trying to turn this ship around. It's a bloody big ship and will take more than just his effort.

I think he's a fine skipper who hasn't got the game changing abilities of other club captains but nobody should question his commitment to the club and his role of Captain.

My question is still - why did our skipper & best player have only 74% time on ground? He was effectively off the field for a whole quarter - why?

He was one of the ones responsible for dragging us off the floor in the third.

For that matter, Vince & Watts didn't have much more game time either (77% & 79%). But these were the guys we needed front & centre.

He hasn't looked right for 3 weeks now (OK, 'flu last week fair enough).

All a bit odd.

I hope it's because they got sick from the previous week, otherwise it is a worry.

They just want the season to end according to Roos.

What sort of a mindset is that?

Makes me worry how these guys will ever be Finals ready if they are tired 3/4 through the season and waiting for it to be over.

This should be the players passion, we want guys who want to be on the field.

Most of these guys won't ever be Finals Ready

They can play. That was shown in the 3rd Q

But they are not up to 100 minutes of it

Should be. But it will not happen

Roosy's biggest clean out coming up...

Agree with the pro Jones posts. Our best player, the heart and soul of the team. No-one else comes close from a captaincy viewpoint.

Has played this year with injury and heavy tags.

is this fact?

One midfielder is supposed to prevent an entire red hot team running all over the top of his team?

A bit of help would've been nice.

This argument is pointless and goes round in circles with middle to poor clubs. When Richmond are struggling Cotchin is the worst captain in the league, when they're winning he's suddenly a great leader.

Why wasn't this brought up when Jones destroyed Richmond? Or whenever he kicks a clutch goal (rarely misses, unlike Cotchin)?

We beat Geelong and Carey is comparing him to Selwood, we lose to the Bulldogs and now his captaincy is questioned.

What a joke.

He's been more up and down than previous years and I have questioned his leadership at times, but it can be hard to grasp from the outside

People were screaming for him to be the captain in 2012-13, so would it really achieve much changing it again? I see McDonald as a capable captain but not sure if he'd be ready or the process of changing again would help us.

Even if there's a better option by no means is Jones undeserving. We could also go the way of co-captains which Roos started at the Swans (I think)

A mindset that just reinforces supporters views about the players at MFC. Obviously we have some AFL worthy players, however we also have our fair share of duds.

I hate Paul Roos making statements like that! They are paid fantastic money to play a number of games to the best of their ability.

The MFC is in no position to send out this type of message.....what a nonsense Roosy

Jetta was visibly struggling with flu like symptoms more than most, and I think Jones was too.

I'm reasonably fit and young, but if they had the flu anything like I've had, I'm astonished they managed to play.

And it has hung around for about 2 weeks so far, in various guises.

He's our most consistent midfielder (though isn't consistent enough for someone of his ability, IMO). He's being asked to be the leader of a club with no other leaders.

His support crew consists of Howe, Garland, Lumumba, Dunn, Dawes, Grimes, Jamar, Garlett, Cross, Vince - in other words, his support crew sucks.

He has an enormous burden on his shoulders, and he's struggling with it.

The focus should be on how to provide him with the required level of support, not whether to take the captaincy off him. He's captain material, but to captain any club requires a team effort and he can't do it alone.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
