Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Say what you like about Garland being scarred or not being able to overcome the mental demons of the past few years. He played 3 quarters of footy with a broken hand! That is commitment and takes some serious mental strength to be able to do that.

Guys, ANB won't play - Roos said as much in his presser, and I was pleased to hear it. Seems our supporters have this obsession with promoting new draftees as soon as they have a game where they've had 30 touches - have we not heeded the lessons of years past?! Let him develop for a while and continue to build consistent form at Casey so that he's well and truly ready later in the year.

Jesus I'm sick of this rubbish.

Firstly, it's not one game. Secondly, Brayshaw played early and has retained his spot. What makes ANB any different? Both have shown they can compete against senior bodies.

If Roos deems him not ready then so be it, but don't paint it as some over anxiousness to play young players. The issue is YOUR paranoia about ruining young players by exposing them too early because of the past. Entertain the notion that maybe a player like Neal-Bullen will benefit from the experience.

Same. I don't recall him even being mentioned.

Mentioned in Roos views. He didn't rule him out, in fact reading between the lines probably ruled him in as a starter this week.

Along the lines of would prefer him to play more games at Casey, then mentioned the injury toll and looking to select best team they can etc.

What makes it different to Brayshaw? Er, perhaps the fact that Brayshaw had a full pre-season, or do you think that getting a fitness base in pre-season is meaningless? ANB was out from Christmas time onward due to a knee. Brayshaw only started in the magoos because he missed a couple of NAB games due to concussion. Secondly, and this is to a lesser extent than reason one - body type. Brayshaw is a bit stronger than ANB at this point in time.

My point has nothing to do with your ridiculous view that I'm paranoid (nothing like Demonland posters to start getting personal when they disagree with an opinion is there?!). I'm as excited as anyone else is about seeing him debut. I just think our supporters often see or hear about one of the new draftees have a big game at Casey and decide that he has to be rushed straight into the team. Granted, he's played well for a couple of weeks (and in the development league prior to that) but he needs to do it for a bit longer - guys like Billy Hartung at Hawthorn had to knock the door down to get selected, and I'd like to see ANB play a few more good games before being selected. You're entitled to think otherwise but I won't label you as being paranoid or anything else for having such a view!

And my mistake re: Roos' comments about ANB in his presser - it was actually in Roos' views but it doesn't matter, the point is he said he'd rather give him more time at Casey.

I feel every time we play the saints injuries cruel our chances (e.g. Tommy mc was it last year or the year before where he got that massive corky and Reiwalt got off the chain). I think we can beat them, but i hate how depleted we are, and if we end up loosing many might jump ship when really these injuries are making it so hard for us!

Give me Kent, Vandenburg and Salem back in and i'd be very happy!

Excited anyway! Go dees :)!

Well certainly still think Tyson & Grimes are certain to come in.

For me it then becomes a question of one of Michie/Neal-Bullen to come in as an inside midfielder and one of Harmes/Stretch to come in and play half forward to provide some run, spread and forward pressure.

Changes have been minimised this year. With two compulsory changes already thru injury, they're less likely to make another one, let alone two.

Of course, being a Sunday match, they'll name an extended bench.

Fcuk you people take this shite way too serious. If Roosy picks him anb is ready if he doesn't pick him then he's not.

He might pick him when he'd rather not due to injuries and this is a real option at the moment.

I think from how Roos has spoke at all the pressers he will not want to make many changes but there will obviously be two forced changes and I have also heard that Newton suffered a bit of an ankle injury and whilst he spent a fair bit of time on the bench was also able to play the game out, so dependent on recovery and a fitness test could determine his ability to play.

Selection is always an interesting prospect but not going to be upset with any changes that occur.

Tyson, then any of Michie, Grimes, ANB, Stretch or Rohan Bail dependent on roles that will be required and way we are looking to work the team. I don't think Harmes will be played.

I would personally think that two mids coming in is the best idea and letting Lumumba spend more time in the backline in a role similar to Garland could be the case but who knows.

Go back and read your post. You are the one who brought a personal element by spouting this often repeated nonsense of supporters being "obsessed" with wanting to play the youngsters too early, and "not learning lessons of the past", inferring that it is driven by some irrational desire to want to push players before they are ready. If that's your attitude, in return, you can cop being called paranoid on the chin. There are near countless examples of first year players who have hit the ground running. What has happened in the past under a different coaching regime is irrelevant.

As to your arguments as to why he shouldn't be played yet (which you should've started with in the first place), fair enough. Pre-seasons are important at this stage of their career and as I said, if he's deemed not physically ready so be it. Given the form he has shown it would still be up for strong consideration I would've thought. I don't accept your second argument re body type. Brayshaw is no vandenBerg. The difference between him and ANB is negligible and both have shown an ability to compete against mature bodies for some time.

Having watched Roos views now, I agree that Roos doesn't sound overly keen on playing him just yet.

In: Tyson, Grimes

Out: Garland, vandenBerg

I see no need for any more than two changes, and since there are two forced ones, I'd leave it at that.

No hurry on ANB. If he keeps up his VFL form, his time will come.

Would drop Newton before Matt Jones personally. Both survive this week.

  • We look to need outside runners more than ball winners, particularly with Tyson coming in. I don’t think ANB plays unless we drop Newton or Riley.
  • I would definitely retain M Jones and start him.
  • Is it possible that White gets a game ahead of Grimes?

Rapt to see Garland getting some overdue recognition. He has the odd bad game but overall has been a good servant of the club.

With regards to ANB, I can't see how his position is any different to Stretch or Brayshaw who already have debuted.

While there should be no hurry if he's ready, he's ready and sometimes giving a kid a sniff of the big time is an important part of their development. Happy to trust the Football dept to make the call.

Given that we're making a big play at September action I thoroughly concur...

actually..

We have THAT much depth currently...how about we play a kid with a bit of form...you know...just to have a look etc...I know...maverick thinking !! but hey

In Tyson ,ANB,Grimes

Out Vanderberg,Garland,Newton

Newton was poor in the weekend only 7 touches all game. Was he tagging anyone?

Neal-Bullen must come in 4 weeks in a row of solid form, and in the bests most weeks for Casey.

His game on the weekend was outstanding will take Vanders place for now.

Grimes comes in form Garland.

Spent a chunk of time on the bench, had an issue with his ankle, was treated by the medicos and then got back on but battled after that, also he had 9 touches ;)

Is Tyson for VandenBerg an improvement or a loss?

Like to see Tyson come back with a bang.

Vanders has been really good.

If Tyson is still not 75% then ANB would get the nod from me but my thinking would be similar.

Garland's actions were very impressive and I hope he is out for only a few weeks. His absence is somewhat mitigated by the presence of Fitzpatrick and does allow Grimes to fill Garland's shoes more easily.

If Fitz can get rid of those brainfades and be less passive when the ball is around him - shepards, blocks, def/off movement, then he will be turning his athletic gifts and length into plusses that set him apart and will find him a career in this league. But he has to get it going in the next month - I think he is drinking at the last chance saloon and closing hours are upon him...

Different styles of play but Tyson is a much better footy player than Vanders - I think we get too caught up with what we have just seen. Tyson was excellent last year and is our second best mid when all lined up and in form.

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
