Wattsy would also go well on the vast spaces over in the West, where his pace & kicking would be very handy.

You can do well in the mining industry I here as well. He'd probably go best in administration tho he doesn't like to get dirty.

We aren't going to land shiel without offering him the mother of all contracts and there is no guarentee that even if he agreed to come to us that Jeremy Howe and or first pick would be enough, I think we'd be better off trying to get a couple of blokes from the next Teir down and developing that superstar from within

Howe and our first pick for coniglio and tommlinson??

well if we want to build a great engine room, we have to get these types, & gut runners.

------------------------------------------------

the problem is we go after players when they have already blossomed... instead of getting them when they are into their careers, but a bit home sick... early on.

look back at Boak, Danger, & others... we could have shown real interest & zest for them about 5 yrs back, when they were homesick, but lucky for them we didn't, at that time.

now we are in better hands managing the list, we should be into trades heavily for talent wanting to come home.

.... here are some players to look at come 2015 years end, apparently said to be out of contract at this time? some may be a good fit for us?

no doubt there will be other potential trades amongst still contracted players, still within other clubs lists.

how is it that the threads are merged but the key to the 2015 out of contracts post, gets lost in the depths of that merger? this post is the key to being able to see at a glance who most of the players un-contracted are.

so this post should be attached to the very first post, so its easy to access.

Realistic targets off of that OOC list would include.

Jacob Townsend, Matt Buntine, Andrew Moore, and Nathan Gordon.

Of those, I would be specifically targeting Buntine and Moore, then would settle on the other 2.

That would be a good start, I think it's practical.

Outside of those, we'd have to pay massive overs.

This trade season, the key will be - patience. Allow the chips to fall as they may, then pick up the scraps.
I think players like Townsend, Buntine, Corr, and others, could be forced out for cheap towards the back end of the trade period.

Whatever the case, MFC have to do what other clubs aren't doing. If MFC chases a big time player, it will have to be Kelly, Whitfield, or someone with scope to improve.

It is unlikely we will prize out Treloar, Shiel, Dangerfield or Sloane. But, Kelly and Whitfield are - what Shiel and Treloar were coming into last trade period.

But, IMO, that is all fairly ambitious, and I'd be happy to settle with Buntine, Moore, Townsend or Gordon.

Another target that might come into calculations is Tomlinson.

Sorry, Ding....no way!

Cannot stay on the park - Gumbletonesque like.

Big, big no....if we can snare a come home player from Port, I'd rather go for Aaron Young....

We might have targets but why TF would they want to come here?

We will win between 6-8 games, showing clear signs of improvement and that, along with a big contract, may do it.

The contract bit I can believe, the rest, well....

I don't think we will win more than 2014, maybe 5 at most. Sorry Adam.

Must be bold like the Dogs were with Tom Boyd and open the cheque book for a blue chip midfielder.

While the jury is out on Boyd, they at least went out and made a big play to fill a gaping long term hole in their lineiup

We need to do the same.

Opening your cheque book and giving up everything for a player doesn't work. The Blues tried it with Judd and it netted them a couple of finals appearance and now on the back end a whole lot of pain on the way. We would have one gun player but miss out on a number of other options, in the end building a side that is unable to challenge for a flag but can finish in the lower half of the 4.

The only way to build a premiership side is to draft well and trade smart. Roos knows this so I'm confident he will bring in more talent this off season but no way will he give up everything for one player.

i dont think its the case of simply opening a chequebook for the benefit of ONE player its the loosening of the wallet in oder to pay overs for 2-3 to come to us. They wont otherwise. GWS is getting a sniff of finals. We only get that if we're down wind of someone !!

I think a Judd-like trade for an established star could be a mistake.

I'd much rather a tested budding talent that essentially saves us a couple of years development, and has exposed form but is not yet the finished article.

Much like the Dom Tyson deal.

I'd throw the kitchen sink at Whitfield. I'd be trying to tempt Prestia or Coniglio.

Put in a call to James Aish. 2-4 years in should be the aim.

your just guessing that 'x' player in his 3rd or 4th season, will get $M1.5 mill a year.... nothing ventured nothing got.

this is the sort of thinking that has kept us down... too many over-conservative types have wrung this club, over the last few decades, & this is another reason why e'd stole the best location for a footy development dept', from under our own noses. We had no go in us at all. & look how the pies have traveled since.

........ we have to wake up in the coffins we've been asleep in, & rise up & take the game on... we haven't been dead, we've been hiding. & copping plenty.

arise the Demons.

all the weak kneed types, all lineup behind one another, but none have any real go, or ticker; they all just push one another forward, & say you go.

all watts's & gysbert types.

Wonder if we are on of the cubs? Hed make an awesome pairing with Jesse, but he has the WADA stuff hanging over his head

Id put him in the backline to be honest, and replace dunn/fitzpatrick.. AA full back playing forward.. he is only average up forward, but at 200cm he is exactly what id want back there.

brisbane is the one throwing big coin at him.

alex rance's moves could impact everything. he stays with the tiggas, he goes on holidays for a year, he walks from the tiggas - all could have massive impact on other trading options. richmond will be screaming bloody murder if they lose him as we lost chip, simply as he wasn't in the top 10 paid players in his out-of-contract year.

the big difference is that we planned for chip to go. richmond's defence is built around rance.

Sure he is more proven at CHB than as a KPF, but he would be better than Dawes playing forward. No harm in having a quality swing man either.

I'd see Tomlinson as more gettable though, even though he is smaller. He'd be easier to complete a successful trade too, as Essendrug are notorious to deal with.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
