Bail got less than mat jones who only players 3/4

His one chance to influence the game he shanks the kick after he should have hand allied it to Garlett in the square.

I thought Bail competed well all game. May not have got the possessions but his repeat efforts allowed us to retain the ball in our forward half on several occasions.

The bump was fair. Jones had a terrible lack of awareness in the situation.

Ridiculous comment. If he'd done that to Nathan Jones, you'd call it differently.

All he had to do was retard him. Not concuss him. A "bump" that causes concussion - in 2015 - is never "fair".

"Lack of awareness" makes no difference. And whether or not you like the player makes no difference.

If the Match Review Committee has any consistency & integrity, he'll go. And there's the problem ...

- Need more from Toumpas like that.

- Pedersen is a player who absolutely gets the best from himself, great competitor.

- Hogan.

- Keep Howe up forward.

- Spencer looks more unorthodox than anyone I've seen, but can be surprisingly effective. Not our future though.

From the Herald Sun 'Super ladder'

MELBOURNE

Check out the moment with two minutes to go in the second quarter, when Hogan gathers, eludes the elastic Dahlhaus before hitting a teammate on the chest. My goodness, gracious me.

Most underestimate Bail's value to the team. He's frustrating when he has the ball in hand, but as a run with player and a defensive forward he's often the cog that helps the team function. I noticed this at stages last season too. Just needs to give it that extra few % until he deserves to be a regular

Warning: Rant below

I've found myself increasingly irritated by Matthews commentary in the media.

The first thing is the man's voice - it is high-pitched and inconsequential - like white noise. I must say I routinely ignore his "special comments" because his voice is so pissant and whiny - really incongruent to his reputation as being one of the toughest men in the game's history.

Secondly, though is that he legend status in the game has given him carte blanche to say whatever he damn well pleases - and its not like these utter eunuchs like Hamish McLaughlin are ever going to pull him up on it.

For example, in the wake of Clarkson hitting a fan incident (whatever you're view on that aside) Matthews remark was that the fan was lucky not to recieve worse - this was on that wretched Channel 7 sunday footy show. That ludicrous and irresponsible comment was met with applause and lots of self-satisfied nodding of heads from the invertebrate sycophants in the studio. "lucky not to recieve worse" - are you kidding me, Lethal? What did that fan deserve, then? Broken jaw? A Neville Bruns special perhaps. For a man with a criminal conviction for king-hitting someone he should understand the dangers of such a strike. But he doesn't. He applauds it because all the man has ever known is to belt someone when they get in your way (or even if they don't)

You can imagine if an ex-player held in less esteem had made this comment - a Jason Akermanis for example (who isn't the media but take your pick) - he would definitely be held to account and made to apologise for his remarks. Not Lethal though, noone even batted an eyelid as far as I know. He is beyond reproach and so revered that the guy believes his own [censored] - seems everyone else does too.

Not me too.

Undoubtedly one of the greatest players of all time and arguably one of the greatest coaches too - (although slightly more fortuitous I'd say). But I really wish the guy would just recede into the background - I'm completely sick of him (obviously!)

Sorry, this rant is more to do with the boys club that is AFL media and nothing to do with the game. Regardless, 2 cents right here. ;)

Oh, love you Jesse. Don't listen to whiny Leigh's raspy twaddle.

Leigh matthews is old school sicilian dead horse on the bed stuff...

Really outdated on the whacking blokes, communication and levels of violence that are now coming to be expected by the footy and wider community at large...

Great to see Garlett with the mark of the week - thanks GB (Gill's Brother) with your ability to read numbers on the back !

Issue he(Goodes) will have is he left the ground at the time of making the hit, medium/high impact and Jones being forced off. Medical report will play some part also in the outcome

It was high. I have no problem with him deciding to bump, but he jumped and hit Jones in the face. He has to go. Maybe while he's resting he can learn how to do it properly.

Will the surname save him? Has done for his bro in the past.

How many weeks will Goodes get for his hit on M. Jones?

Looked head high, Goodes jumped off the ground to bump, and Jones was subbed out with concussion.

He'll be resting anyway. Broke his arm a bit later

Is vandenburg in trouble? I'm pretty sure he kicked goodes' hand/arm as goods was trying to pick up the ball which probably broke it. I'm probably more happy about the injury, he was a little pr ick all day to Melbourne players including hogan, extremely fiery and confrontational, was just trying to start trouble (e.g. after how mark having a go at Hogan) & the shephard was of an aggressive player wanting to hurt, rather than wanting to protect his ball carrier.

Also on Bail, one poster praised his efforts keeping the ball in our forward line (which i acknowledge we have been poor at), but i think i noticed 2 incidents where we out numbered the opposition and all he had to do was tap or get the ball to the goal side melbourne player and instead he held it in and created a ball up. E.g. just before halftime or 3Qtr time (i think it was) the ball was kicked over his and someone elses head, the ball bounced up (instead of rolling on) and in my head i was like jump up and tap it forward to the melbourne player around 10-15m out from goal by himself, instead he grabbed it, tackled immediately, ball up siren. It's an easy goal that was lost that we can't afford at this stage not to take.

Anyway very happy with the win, keep the confidence up boys! Go Dees!

While some questioned PR on his decision not to review the Hawthorn match, I knew it was the right thing to do (or not do if you would like). While we could have gone apoplectic and demanded that everyone be drawn and quartered, that would have been self indulgent. It would have appeased WYL, but we merely would have fallen back into 'Here we go again' mode.

Top marks for some of the best man management I have seen in a long time.

PS ND can still get the boys up even though he hasn't coached the club in 10 years. Essendon were stupid not to have made him coach in 2007.

When are you going to get on the reality bus OD? Enough of your persistent pessimism. We are back to stay.

Pies are ours. Hogan - 5, Garlett - 4, Pedersen - 3, Howe - 3 plus mark of the year as he plucks one out of the top deck of the Ponsford stand, Watts 32 possessions, Viney destroys Swan with a crunching bump in the 1st quarter. We will win by 10 goals.

I know it's hard to believe but the tide has turned, the seas have parted and one four n twenty will feed all 67,000 fans at the G. The big bloke has signed on. We have a new sponsor!

Love all the optimism.

Moses. Loaves and Fishes. Straight from the bible!

Good to have the blessing of the big 'G'!

'The Reverend' moniker is quite apt!

Something interesting from the doggies:

http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/video/2013-05-24/bevos-brief-members-message-rd8?camefrom=EMCL_643652_27677850

They send one of these to their members after each game. Basically the coaches brief thoughts on how things went. I'm told it's usually more interesting than this one.

I do like that they didn't see it coming.

I don't know why coaches say 'we didn't see it coming'.

It basically says: we didn't do our homework!

Or worse: we under- estimated the opposition!

The last time a rookie coach said that was Mark Neeld after the first game of 2013.

Beveridge is learning about coaching life when the honeymoon is over!

I bet he won't be bragging about not playing a bona fide ruckman anymore.

It was dumb to advertise it after the Freo game.

As if Paul Roos wouldn't find a strategy to exploit it.

Brought him completely unstuck yesterday.

Beveridge was out-coached big time, by the one and only Mr :roos:

A number of tackles didn't stick today. I believe we beat that tackle count against Adelaide and Richmond. So it is very achievable.

Do some research - hitting a hundred tackles is a rarity - setting "benchmarks" is about setting the bar high but also making it realistic and achievable- you don't set an athletes benchmark as achieving a PB every week as you setting him up to fail.

I have heard commentators suggest that when a team makes 80 tackles they rarely lose.

As an aside, I think Clint said elsewhere that the quality is most important - tackles where the player getting tackled is able to get his hands free and handpass is detrimental to the team as it takes the tackler out of the play. Tackles that stick are whats important.

Went to the match yesterday, confident that we would win after picking us in both tipping competitions. I have only just arrived home from post- match celebrations and have had a great time reading these posts on this thread, agreeing with 90% of the posters.

My hero of the day was Fitzy who gave the $7Million Man a complete bath. What a team we will be next year when we have Petracca in with Vanders and Co,

I was frustrated with our tackling and intensity in the first half. Thought we were poor, particularly our tackling and thought it could be an early exit to go see my mate Franky Grey, especially with the amount of inside 50's the Dogs had in the first quarter. Tackling in the second half was great and every time they tried to lift our intensity lifted a bit further.

Special appreciation for the Backman who were under siege in that first half, kept us in the game

To all those who where in the doom and gloom tread slashing their wrist, don't post on this tread, like i said there how we played in the last three rounds against the best three teams from the last three years, was not the real reflection of this season, when we have played teams around our level, we are 3 and 2,we where never going to beat Sydney freeo and hawthorne, it was just bad luck they where back to back to back.

I was just reading the "priority pick" thread over breakfast, and this gold from someone who will remain nameless "can't see us winning to many more games"

Hogan's handpass to Pedersen with the game in the balance. Oh my [censored] God.

I think the last time I saw a key forward do that in MFC colours it just might have been as far back as hairy Garry! Fricken awesum stuff from 1st year KPF

Matt Jones shutting down Bob murphy. I only noticed murphy once and that was in the last quarter. Fitzy seemed to be where he needed to be and do what he needed to do at all times. I'm not sure he lost a contest. Toump ran well and needs time at this level. I think with him it really is just time. He'll always be a bit suspect under pressure, but experience will make a very big difference with him (which is not true of others). Brayshaw came into it once the speed came out of the game. He'll be a damn sight better next year.

Howe is great fun to watch and it is games like that which will help us get something for him at the end of the year.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
